Melai Cantiveros is hailed PBB Double Up’s Big Winner

After nineteen long, exciting and challenge-filled weeks, twenty-six housemates and two Big Brother houses, Pinoy Big Brother Double Up finally came to an end tonight. But it wasn't just any ending, mind you. It was an ending worth remembering, an ending that will get any PBB fan through the rest of the year!

Exaggeration aside, the Big Date on the Big Night was exactly as exciting, momentous and unforgettable as it promised to be. The night started young but wild upon the arrival of the Big Five to the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, where they received an overpowering cheers of support from their fans who were already there even hours before the actual Big Night. However, as tradition, Jason, Johan, Paul Jake, Tibo and Melai weren't able to see the screaming fans at first for they were safely hooded and locked in the Volkswagen Beetle convertible car that wheeled them into the venue.

The venue, on the other hand, was flooded with thousands of people who were marveling at the impressive three-layered stage stacked in the middle decorated in a hybrid of the Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day vibes. And if they weren't fantastic at that time yet, they were just such when host Toni Gonzaga and the 20 former housemates came into stage for their opening dance performance!

Meanwhile, this season just kept on laying on surprises for its fans and other audience! It was because that the Big Night was not only happening at the stadium, but also at the different provinces namely Cagayan De Oro, Quezon City, Mindoro, Cebu and General Santos City to represent each member of the Big Five! These venues were graced by former PBB winners and housemates such as Celebrity Edition Big Winner Ruben Gonzaga, PBB Edition 2 housemate Ned Rapiz, PBB Edition 1 Third Big Placer Cass Ponti and PBB Edition 1 Fourth Big Placer Uma Khouny.

The rest of the program continued with more performances from international pop sensation Charice Pempengco, Britain's Got Talent's Charlie Green, Pinoy Dream Academy scholars Bugoy Bogayan and Jay-ar Siaboc, Rocksteddy front man Teddy Corpuz, and singers Mark Bautista, Yeng Constantino and Sheryn Regis. The main cast of the upcoming Mexicanovela adaptation Rubi namely Angelica Panganiban, Shaina Magdayao, Jake Cuenca and Diether Ocampo was also there; while the Jabbawockeez, which was hailed as the America's best dance crew, and PBB Teen Edition Big Winner Kim Chiu equally gave an outstanding dance production consecutively.

Meanwhile, while the party was going onstage, the Big Five were locked into the waiting room, whisking away their anxiousness by drawing strength from each other. Big Brother also helped in making them a little less nerve-racked than they were by giving them his last speech of encouragement. However, that didn't help much as in the next moments, the envelopes which held the results of the save votes were already rolled onto stage. The time for the announcement of the Big Winner has come! And the results? Melai won as the Big Winner with 32.08%, followed comparatively by Paul Jake with a 27.31%; Jason and Johan came in third and fourth with 24.97% and 7.94% respectively while Tibo landed as the very first Fifth Big Placer with a 7.69%!

And now all's that left to say is that all's great that ends great! Congratulations to the winners while see you all in the next PBB Teen Edition this summer!

PBB's Melai Cantiveros: The Confident Comedienne A Fun, Fearless Female Awardee for 2010, PBB Double Up's Big Winner talks about the highs and lows of showbiz with her signature sense of humor.

Posted on May 4, 2010 10:00 am by Regina Belmonte, Cosmo.ph Staff Writer Photo: Regina Belmonte

Pinoy Big Brother Double Up's final housemate, Melissa "Melai" Cantiveros, is famous for her 100-words-a-minute motormouth, infectious sense of humor, and no-nonsense attitude about her newfound fame and how fleeting it could be. Cosmo talks to the newly minted star and Fun, Fearless Female 2010 awardee about her new showbiz life and everything she loves and hates about it.

What do you like most about being famous?

You now have your own shows, right? What's the most difficult thing about being an artista?

Ang pinakamahirap sa akin 'yung acting. 'Yung mag-acting, mag-drama. Dapat daw natural. E hindi natural sa 'kin. Sobrang nahirapan ako mag-drama!

Is showbiz really what you've always wanted in life?

Showbiz?

Kung sakaling magsawa ka sa showbiz, do you still want to be a teacher?

You're known for being frank. Where did you get that aspect of your personality?

(laughs)

You said you are part of a women's group in Gen San. What's your advocacy?

Advocacy? 'Yung kabataan, instead na mag-drugs o mag-rugby, mag-sports na lang tayo. Basketball. Walang masama sa
sports, healthy pa tayo. At saka doon din kami sa aming lugar nag-focus. Pagkatapos sa lugar namin, doon naman sa kabilang barangay.

How do you think you serve as an inspiration for women and Pinoys in general?

Okay? Pwede rin kayo gumanda katulad ko. Mag-makeup lang kayo!

Melai Cantiveros hailed as one of Cosmopolitan's Fun Fearless Females

Pinoy Big Brother Double Up winner Melisa "Melai" Cantiveros is one of the 10 women who made it to the first batch of Fun Fearless Females chosen by Cosmopolitan Magazine. Jocelyn Dimaculangan

Heads turned as Melisa "Melai" Cantiveros entered the main ballroom of the New World Hotel in Makati City last night, May 6. The big winner of Pinoy Big Brother Double Up wore a metallic gray and pink cocktail dress designed by Bing Cristobal as she accepted her trophy for being one of the 10 Fun Fearless Females of Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Bea Alonzo is also one of the recipients of the FFF Award as she was hailed as the fave leading lady and movie drama princess. International singer Charice is also honored for bringing honor to Filipinos for her immense talent. The other recipients are: fashion designer Kate Torralba; pilot Jessica Cox who was born without arms; activist-artist Kiri Dalena whose films often tackle injustice and human rights violations in the country; Habitat for Humanity's Youth Ambassador Alex Eduque' VP for sales and marketing for Globe Asiatique Divine Lee; Maritess Mendoza who teaches the poor, needy and the elderly in Nueva Ecija; and Joy Rojas, the first Southeast Asian and Filipina to run across the United States in a span of 120 days.

This marks the first time that Cosmopolitan Philippines organized an awarding ceremony in honor of the women who have made a difference in their respective fields. All of the recipients are featured in the May 2010 issue of Cosmo, which is also the 13th anniversary issue of the magazine.

FEARLESSS...PERO TAKOT SA ASO. How does Melai feel to be chosen as one of the 10 fun fearless women?

"Over naman! Nasuwertihan lang, napadaan lang sa akin," says Melai jokingly. "Hindi ko nga alam, e, pang-mayaman pala itong Cosmo! Kaya sobrang pinaghandaan ko, nagsuot pa ko ng gown."

She quipped, "Sobrang happy ako kasi part ako ng Cosmopolitan...fearless talaga ako pero takot ako sa aso!"

Since Bea Alonzo is one of the women honored this year, how does Melai feel to be in the same league as the former Box-Office Queen?

"Sobrang happy rin...hindi ko akalain na kahanay ko si Ms. Bea Alonzo. Amazing ang feeling!" she replied.

In her opinion, why did Cosmo choose her to accept this award?

"Dahil sa PBB [Pinoy Big Brother Double Up] at si Direk Lauren [Dyogi, the business unit head of PBB]. Kung hindi dahil sa kanila, hindi ako makikilala sa buong mundo," said Melai.

ON HER RELATIONSHIP WITH SWEETYPIE. According to Melai, her boyfriend Jason Francisco even teased her about her award. "Noong una, parang hindi siya naniniwala pero ngayon naniniwala na siya. At sobrang proud siya sa akin."

The couple have been together for three months already. How do they show their jealousy for each other?

"Tahimik lang yun. Pag ako nagselos, sinasabi ko talaga. Pero pag siya, tahimik lang. Parang pinaparinggan lang ako kaya natatakot ako."

Members of the press asked what gifts they have already given to each other and Melai candidly replied, "Seryoso naman kami [sa isa't isa]. Nagmamahalan naman kami... Ako ang ibinigay ko sa kanya, kuwintas na anti-sakit. Pinakamahal na binigay niya sa akin isang kuwintas."

Melai and Jason are very open to the media about their relationship but they have learned how to cope up with the frenzy surrounding them. What if she suddenly becomes pregnant at this time?

"Hindi naman ganun si Sweetypie [her term of endearment for Jason]. Iniisip nga namin na hindi kami artista. Iniisip namin na normal na tao lang kami."

ON KISSING SCENE WITH SAM. The native of General Santos City is slated to star with Sam Milby, Maja Salvador, and Jason Francisco in an upcoming teleserye titled Impostor. It will air its pilot episode on May 17.

How was it like shooting a kissing scene with Sam Milby?

"Kinabahan ako pero nahiya nga ako kasi napaka-guwapo naman ni Sam Milby. Nailang ako at hindi ako talaga nakagalaw," said Melai.

What is the difference of Sam's lips with that of Jason's?

"Ang labi ni Sweetypie may buhok [referring to his mole]. Mas malambot ang labi ni Sam, pero si Sweetypie ang mas masarap ang labi. Kasi siyempre boyfriend mo kaya mai-inspire ka talaga."

ON HER FATHER'S SICKNESS. It was previously reported that Melai's father was hospitalized recently.

The Big Winner of PBB Double Up is scheduled to move to her one-bedroom house in Binangonan next month. Aside from taping for Impostor, Melai is also busy taping for the TV show [email protected] where she will act opposite Vhong Navarro and Toni Gonzaga.

    Hobbies: dancing, badminton
    Favorite Color: violet

Favorite Show: Wowowee, Lovers in Paris
    Favorite Actor: Ryan Agoncillo
    Favorite Actress: Judy Ann Santos
    Favorite Singer: Sarah Geronimo

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
What/who will you miss the most upon entering Kuya’s house?
My family, friends, ‘yung boyfriend ko, at ‘yung kama ko.
If you can be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why?
    Si Kristine Hermosa
Do you think you’ll get along well with the other housemates? Why?
Susubukan ko talagang makibagay sa kanila.
What would irritate/annoy you inside the house?
‘Yung mga moody na tao. Ayoko rin na ginugulo ‘yung buhok ko.

As a child, Melisa would often be teased by people as an adopted child because she looks different from her siblings. But she would just laugh off whatever others would say. At a young age Melisa already had a good sense of humor. She is always at the center of attention and she even won as president of the student council because of her popularity in their university. Whatever she lacks in looks, she makes up with her witty punch lines.

Meet Melai, the unlikely 'queen' of the Big House

Is Melai for real? Or is she a big put-on? Melai is the endearing monicker of Melisa (with a single ‘s’) Cantiveros who emerged the Big Winner after more than 131 days inside the PBB (Pinoy Big Brother) House with no phones (“cel” or landline) and no radio or TV, no contact at all with the outside world, together with initially more than a dozen housemates (winnowed down from more than a thousand aspirants from around the country). The kinky-haired kababayan of Manny Pacquiao from GenSan will turn 22 on April 6 (Aries).

She’s P1-M richer, the prize she won along with a house and lot in Cainta, Rizal, and a new boyfriend, housemate Jason Francisco (together they are called Melason), who wooed and won her inside the Big House. He calls her Isay (“As in kumikisay-kisay,” said Melai) and she calls him Sweetie Pie. Some people find her “annoying” because of her rapid-fire way of talking and her unrestrained attitude and brutal frankness and honesty, oftentimes unmindful and uncaring about what she said or did even if she and the other housemates were constantly reminded that there were cameras around, watching them 24/7. Yes, Melai’s loquaciousness is natural and, no, her “rapid-fire-ness” is not a put-on. She does speak that way, so fast as if she’s forever being chased by an invisible zombie that you have to catch up with her to digest every word in every phrase in every sentence that tumbles out of her mouth, punctuated with her favorite expressions, “over-over!” and “everything-everything!” The events these past four months leading to the grand finals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last Feb. 13 have been, that’s it, “over-over” and “everything-everything” for the Mindanao State University (MSU) B.S. Education senior whose ambition to be an English teacher might have to give way to a career in showbiz. ABS-CBN, producer of PBB, let Melai visit her folks in GenSan after her big win, but only for a day. Upon the invitation of ABS-CBN PR man Kane Choa, Funfare was able to enter the Big House (usually off-limits to outsiders) for exclusive one-on-ones with Melai and the second placer, Cebu’s Paul Jake Castillo (watch for a “body talk” with him soon). What happened during your homecoming? “I was sad and happy. Sad because I was able to talk to my family for only 30 minutes and happy because nakauwi ako after more than four months. I missed my friends, ang bonding-bonding namin sa mall at sa oval.

Many things have changed. “Not really. Beer lang.” Siguro your townmates were very happy. You left GenSan an unknown and you went back na sikat ka na. “Dati-dati, nobody bothered with me when I strolled at the mall. Now, nagpuntahan sila lahat doon to see me. I told them, ‘Uy, sure ba kayo? Is it your first time here in Manila? “Yeah, first time. Maliligaw ako paglabas ko dito sa PBB. Over-over talaga!” During the presscon, you admitted na naka-pito ka ng boyfriend. How old were you when you started having a boyfriend? “Four years ago when I was 17.” You said pa that you lost “it” when you were 18. Bakit mo sinabi ‘yon? “Because they told me to be honest; huwag daw ako magsinungaling.” Nabigla ka ba n’ung ibinigay mo “’yon”? “’Yung everything and everything? No naman. I planned it. Pabagsak na ‘yung relationship namin, so ibinigay ko ‘yon to save the relationship. Siya ‘yung pang-seventh. We went steady for two years. It happened nang second year na kami. I’m one year older than him. May work na siya.” Didn’t he like you to join PBB? “Gusto naman niya. We broke up inside PBB. Big Brother spent for everything-everything so he could come to Manila and enter the big house. Doon kami nag-break. It was only on PBB that my parents learned na may boyfriend na pala ako for three years.” He might reconcile with you now that you came out the winner. “Our friends nga in GenSan were telling him, ‘Ang *****-***** mo naman. My taste has changed. Parang ganoon.

” So now you don’t have a boyfriend? “I have. Si Jason.” Ganoon? Di ba gimmick ‘yon? “Boyfriend ko talaga siya! He courted me inside PBB. At first, we didn’t want to tell Big Brother about it.” What do you like about Jason? “Ang kanyang ilong and his shoulders. And also his attitude and everything! Maalaga siya. When I had a fever, siya ang nurse ko. He would tell me, ‘Kain tayo sa labas.’ Sa labas ng bahay. At kain-kain kami doon.” You and Jason come from families with a different background. Mukhang may kaya sina Jason. What about you? “Apat kaming magkakapatid. The oldest is a seaman, the second is a waiter, the third is a housemate...ako ‘yon!...and the fourth is a high-school student. Our parents are okay; hindi sila hiwalay. On Sundays, we go to church together.” How was your childhood, malungkot nga ba? “Our parents were strict and in spite of that, layas pa rin ako nang layas ng bahay kaya madalas ako mabugbog ng father ko. Ay, minsan lang pala ako nabugbog. That’s the way our father would discipline us. “First three months po, wala talaga akong pakialam. Sobrang enjoy. After three months, I started missing my family. Mabuti na lang kinakausap kami ni Big Brother every now and then kaya medyo nalilibang kami.” Didn’t you miss your (ex-)boyfriend? “Hindi! I realized that I didn’t have any more feelings for him.

” What was your ambition in life? “I wanted to be a teacher, English teacher. Hindi ako magaling mag-English kaya I wanted to learn English and teach English.” You never dreamed to be in showbiz? “Never po talaga!” But you are a natural comedian. Who is your favorite, Ai-Ai delas Alas or Pokwang? “I like them both but my favorite is Pokwang kasi nakakatawa po talaga siya. We met in Wowowee.” What did Pokwang tell you? “Sabi niya, ‘Congratulations! You did a good job!’ She’s so nice, napaka-welcoming, over-over!” What are your plans when you go out of PBB? “I will miss the foam bed. But when I move to our house (her prize), bibili ako ng foam bed. I will miss Big Brother, my housemates and the (hidden) cameras.” What will you do with your P1-M cash prize? “Paayos ko ang mga peklat ko, everything-everything. Okey lang ba magpa-puti ako? Over-over!”

Melai sat at the Cosmo Editorial table and entertained everybody.

Melai sits front and center at the Awards.

Melai has her serious face on, watching the other awardees accept their FFF plaques.

Melai Cantiveros definitely stole the show!

She commented that everybody seemed to be speaking in English, so she made a really good-natured attempt to deliver her entire acceptance speech in English, too!

She says women should continue to be fearless so that men can't take advantage of them.
    Everybody loves Melai!

    Melai poses with her plaque.

Melai Cantiveros is all smiles in front of her super glam photo!

Melai sits down for an interview with Cosmo.ph.

She's thrilled to be one of the first 10 Fun Fearless Female awardees.

She says that being fun and fearless means not being afraid to have fun.
