    Josenians Top Mock CPA Board Exams

    Along with other schools in Cebu, the University of San Jose-Recoletos fielded four (4) of its Accountancy students to participate in the regional mock CPA board exams given last February 2 & 3, 2008. All four of them landed in the top 5, as follows:

    1st placer – Ms. Joy Bunayog, BSA-5
    2nd placer – Ms. Nerissa Ranile, BSA-5
    4th placer – Ms. Larianne Kristine Betancor, BSA-4
    5th placer – Ms. Jerma Grace Baris, BSA-4

    The Regional Federation of JPIANs facilitated the mock board exams which were held at the University of Cebu. They tapped the assistance of the Professional Review Training Center (PTRC) and Isla Lipana/Price Waterhouse-Coopers,one of the country’s leading auditing firms.

    USJ-R Accountancy Students are National Winners

    The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) of USJ-R was awarded as an “Outstanding Local Chapter in the Philippines” during the annual national convention of Accountancy students held on April 24-27, 2008 at the Leyte Park Hotel, Tacloban City.

    The award was given in recognition of the local chapter’s multi-faceted activities, academic and non-academic achievements, as well as active participation in the Regional Council and National Federation of JPIAns.

    Another highlight of the convention was the National Accounting Olympiad sponsored by the Professional Review and Training Center (PRTC) in which the USJ-R Accountancy team was awarded as the first runner up.

    USJ-R Tops Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition

    The Commerce team of University of San Jose – Recoletos emerged as the Regional Champion during the 10th Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC) among leading schools in Central Visayas. The one-day competition was held on September 19, 2008 at the University of Southern Philippines. ICFC is widely recognized as the country’s toughest and most prestigious academic competition in economics, banking and finance. This is an annual competition organized by the Financial Executives Institute through partnership with Asian Institute of Management, Society of Chartered Financial Analysts, Citibank, and HP.

    The USJ-R team will represent Central Visayas during the national competition in Manila this October 2008. The members of the team are Haidee Ohayas, RV Marvin Cabañero, Joseph Philip Constantino, Mark Solatorio and Gecel Codera. They undergo rigid training under the following faculty coaches: Mr. Neil Raymond Saletrero, CAT, CPA; Dr. Venus Empuerto; Mr. Ricky Villeta; and Dr. Juanito Aliño.

    Josenians Dominate in Regional Business Plan Competition

    The Best Business Plan Competition –Regional Finals, held on May 17, 2008 at Club Ultima, was concluded with three (3) groups from the College of Commerce of the University of San Jose-Recoletos raking the major awards. The competition was organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines – Zugbuana to encourage young people and promising entrepreneurs to conceive innovative business plans that are not only feasible but are also capable of creating a positive impact on society.

    Three entries from Accountancy Department were sent by USJ-R to participate in the regional competition. All three of them secured the top positions, as follows:

    The business plan entries were judged based on the innovative character of the product/service, the feasibility of the project and the positive contribution to society. The highly competent board of judges was composed of Robert Go (Owner of Prince Warehouse & former President of Cebu Chamber of Commerce), Richard King (CEO, Club Ultima & Crown Regency), Mike Lopez (National Youth Commissioner), and Augustin Palau (Owner of Design Ventures).

    The proponents of Jatropha Carcus Plantation will be sent to Manila to represent the Visayas Region in the National Finals in June 2008. The winners in the National Finals will represent the Philippines in the International Business Plan Competition to be
    held in India in September 2008.

    Josenian prof gets national outstanding business educator award

    College of Commerce faculty Dr. Maria Victoria U. Sy was awarded as an Outstanding Business Educator in the Field of Economics both in the regional and national level.

    The award was given during the 7th Annual Conference of the Philippine Council of Deans and Educators in Business (PCDEB) held at the Asian Institute of Management Conference Center last December 6-7.

    The award takes into account the teaching experience of the nominees to include teaching background, involvement in student activities, research/publications/articles, books and other materials. Also it considers the candidates’ speaking engagements and some other activities like professional, civic and other affiliations, awards and citation, and employment background.

    PCDEB’s primary objectives are “to upgrade business education to respond changes brought about by the dynamic environment of business; to continuously improve the quality of institution in business educations to make business education play an important role in the building and improvement of the country’s economy to develop professionalism among business educators; and to organize and encourage scientific research in the area of global business.

    France partners with USJ-R

    Ambassade de France aux Philippines (AFP) represented by France Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Thierry Borja de Mozota together with University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) President Rev. Fr. Anthony A. Morillo, OAR signed the Agreement on Mutual Cooperation to formally build the linkage between the universities in the Republic of France. This took place at USJ-R conference room last March 6.

    The agreement contains the mutual cooperation to be executed by both Ambassade de France aux Philippines (AFP) and USJ-R to progress and to stimulate international exchange programs. Both sides have agreed that they shall cooperate in joint programs that contribute to the promotion of culture language and arts and shall initiate programs on scholarships, cultural, exchange, fellowships and the likes across the academic fields of students and faculty members of USJ-R and the universities in France. They also have agreed to support the programs that preserve the environment and enhance capabilities of their students to advance their skills in the global arena. This agreement is put into office within five years from the date of signing.

    Aside from Ambassador de Mozota, the other French delegates were Head of Physics and Chemistry Department of the University of Paris Prof. Sandrine Lacombe, Deputy Director of les amis de la France (Cebu) Mr. Louis Thevenin, Scientific Attache of the Embassy of France Mme. Isabelle Espaillard and Attache de Cooperation Universitaire Embassy of France Mme. Marie Aurousseau.

    Ambassador de Mozota had been to some universities in Manila and came here in Cebu as the second city in the Philippines next to country’s capital. He was welcomed by the priest administrators headed by Fr. Morillo, the college deans, the students from all the colleges and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of USJ-R High school.

    Josenian HM Students Dominate In "C.G.C" 2008 Competition

    Selected Hospitality Management students added a feather to their cap after the wining the day in the “Cebu Goes Culinary” 2008 competition organized by the Hotel, Resort, and Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC) held on July 11-12, 2008 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug, Cebu City.

    This biennial-traditional is the grandest culinary event in Cebu where various schools gather and compete with their different culinary skills and expertise.

    Winning gold were Honey Lee and Jansen Tan for Dress the Cake; Chuckie Aying, Marvin Pulvera and Michelle Molo for 3 Tier Wedding Cake; Charles Alipio for Cocktail Mixing; and Mary Joyce Atuel, Kevin de los Reyes and Marvin Rubillos for Table Setting. Bryan Bejoc, Dave Darryl Gelaga, Dwight del Rosario and Alvin Estorba won a silver medal for Creative Cakes; and Joebert Cuesta for Cocktail Mixing. Louie Alcomendras, Mike John Cañete and Katrin Yee were bronze medalists for the Dream Team Challenge; Philip Eleazen and Dario Sandoval for Cocktail Mixing. John Reeve Ylaya, Mark Joel Tenebro and Rosejane Quinapondan all received a diploma for Spa Cuisine. Professors Steven Sasam, Grace Lacson, Deborrah Gandiongko, Roland Getaruelas and Elinor Tapere served as the respective coaches of the student-competitors.

    In the history of “Cebu Goes Culinary”, this is the first time that one team reaped four gold medals, the most number of gold medals ever won so far making USJ-R the over-all winner.

    All the prestigious schools in Cebu offering Hospitality Management program especially on culinary arts participated in the said event.

    USJ-R ICFC Team Ranks 9th in the Philippines

    For the third consecutive time, USJ-R showed its might when its team bested other universities in the Visayas, and became qualifiers in the 8th National Inter Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), and placed 9th in the whole Philippines.

    The team was composed of Accountancy students, namely Niño Jose Chan, Fatima Ango, Romeo Armero, Cleofe Barbon and Larianne Kristine Betancor. They became qualifiers for the national competition when they placed 2nd Runner-Up in the Regional ICFC held on September 15, 2006 at the Center for Performing Arts of USJ-R. This was one of the most exciting quiz bowls because it took place simultaneously via broadband in far places like Bacolod, Davao, Manila and here in Cebu. A one-day competition, it started in the morning and ended at night.

    The prestigious ICFC is an annual activity organized by the Financial Executives (FINEX) composed of finance executives and managers.

    The New FINEX-Cebu President is a Josenian

    Dr. Venus M. Empuerto, a Finance professor of the College of Commerce of University of San Jose – Recoletos, was elected President of the Financial Executives Institute (FINEX) – Cebu Chapter for the year 2009. Along with the other elected officers, she was sworn into office on December 9, 2008 at Cebu Parklane International Hotel. USJ-R President Rev. Fr. Anthony A. Morillo, OAR, was one of the special guests of FINEX during its oathtaking and induction ceremonies. On the same occasion, Dr. Empuerto received a Merit Award for being one of the “Highest Pointers” as FINEX board member; the points were based on the level of involvement in the various activities of the Institute. The award, in effect, recognizes her significant contributions to FINEX as a Supervising Director and ICFC Coordinator for 2008. In her acceptance speech, Dr. Empuerto asked the members “to keep their unity, to serve as agents of change, and to renew their commitment to the noble ideals of the Institute”.

    FINEX is a non-stock, nonprofit, non-political association that is devoted to the continuing development and improvement of financial management techniques and promotion of values. The members of FINEX include finance managers, chief accountants, bankers, entrepreneurs, business executives and academicians who are committed to advance the understanding of concepts and improvement of practices in the field of financial management. FINEX is an active affiliate of the International Association of Financial Executives Institute (IAFEI), an organization of financial executives institute from various countries.

    USR-J Accountancy Student Tops Regional Accounting Quiz Bowl

    Ms. Jerma Grace Baris, a BSA-3 student of USJ-R, emerged champion in the regional accounting quiz bowl sponsored by the Regional Federation of JPIA (RF-JPIA) last September 17, 2006. The contest was one of the RF-JPIA Days, held at the CIT auditorium. With this victory, USJ-R will represent Region 7 in the national Level Quiz Bowl to be sponsored by the National Federation of JPIA (NF-JPIA).

    USJ-R places 9th in ECE board exam

    The University of San Jose-Recoletos placed 9th in the March 2009 Electronics and Communications Board Examination. Kevin Joseph Del Socorro Torres, a March 2008 ECE Cum Laude graduate, garnered an average score of 85.40% and was the one of the three placers from the Visayas-Mindanao Area.

    IE is 4th in PIIE national quiz contest

    BESTING 17 other schools nationwide, the university’s industrial engineering quiz bowl team placed fourth in the 21st PIIE National Quiz Contest held at Holy Angel University, Angeles City, Pampanga on February 21, 2009.

    The three-person team, composed of fourth year industrial engineering students Rankine Ruel G. Novabos, Marvin D. Rafols, and Nancy C. Calago, was positioned behind top three placers University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle University-Manila, and University of the Philippines-Los Baños.

    The quiz bowl covered professional subjects in industrial engineering and mostly had a problem-solving approach. The USJ-R team was the only contestant from the Visayas and Mindanao area and was tied with Southern Luzon State University. The three Josenian contestants were accompanied by coach Dr. Nanette T. Salazar, PIE.

    The annual national quiz contest was held simultaneously with the 6th PIIE National Student Congress which brought together industrial engineering students from all over the country. It had the theme “Business Preservation through Operational Excellence.”

    USJ-R is No. 1 Top Performing School in CPA Exam

    On May 20, 2009, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the official results of the May 2009 CPA Licensure Examinations. Based on the official ranking by PRC, the University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R) ranked No. 1 in Cebu, and No.2 nationwide among schools with 51-99 examinees. While the national passing rate was 28.88%, USJ-R obtained a passing rate of 49%, producing a total of 31 new Certified Public Accountants.

    Additionally, Larianne Kristine C. Betancor, lands fifth (5th) in the topnotchers list. Betancor graduated Magna Cum Laude and has been a consistent dean’s lister.

    Josenians Pass IT Certification Exam

    The University of San Jose – Recoletos through the College of Information, Computer and Communications Technology (CICCT) congratulates all Josenians who passed the Fundamental IT Engineers (FE) exam set by the Philippine National Information Technology Standards (PhilNITS) Foundation last April 2009.

    The following Josenians passed the PhilNITS FE exam:

    * Gerardo Genio, 4th year BS Computer Engineering student
    * Razel Soco, BS Computer Science graduate

    The Fundamental IT Engineers Exam (FE) is one of the 14 exams given by the Japan IT Engineers Examination Center (JITEC) of the Information Technology Promotions Agency (IPA) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan. The Bureau of Product Standards of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the National Computer Center (NCC) has evaluated PhilNITS (formerly called Japan IT Standards Examination of the Philippines) to have equivalence with the European and American standard on the Fundamentals of IT.

    In order to prepare Josenian students for Fundamental IT Engineers Exam, USJ-R CICCT offers free preparatory training to interested students to be facilitated by PhilNITS certified IT instructors. PhilNITS reviewers are also available in the USJ-R Library. (JG)
