Radio DZMM wins silver in New York Festival

ABS-CBN's radio station, DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 bagged the silver prize in the prestigious New York Festivals for the Radio Broadcasting Breaking News Story category (longform) for its special coverage of the Manila Hostage Drama last year.

Peter Musngi, ABS-CBN vice-president for Manila Radio Division, DZMM program and production services manager Marah Faner Capuyan and DZMM executive producer Nannette Quong received the award Thursday night, June 19, at at the Tribaca Rooftop in New York City.

DZMM won for covering the hostage-taking involving a whole busload of pre-school students who were held hostage on March 18, 2007.

It will be recalled that as soon as Radyo Patrol reporter Armel Fernandez broke the story, DZMM geared up for a special coverage and deployed reporters to the scene to get more information and a clearer picture of the situation at hand.

"The biggest breakthrough came when DZMM got hold of Jun Ducat, the hostage-taker himself and as it turned out, it was only through DZMM that he could be contacted. "It also became the link between Ducat and the worried parents of school children," said Musngi.

DZMM veteran anchors Ted Failon and Korina Sanchez bridged him and the proper authorities--from the education department, to the social welfare department and, most importantly, the national police -- for his demands. After 10 long hours of tension, the hostage drama ended when Ducat agreed to surrender and release the hostages at seven in the evening.

"Throughout this, DZMM reported with prudence and acted responsibly thus avoiding a tragic ending to this crisis. The station again lives up to its commitment of being first in news and public service without causing harm and endangering others," said Musngi.

Aside from winning the silver prize, DZMM also earned a finalist berth fot its station manager-anchor Angelo Palmones in the Talk Show Host category for the science-oriented show "Bago Yan, Ah!"

DZMM Radyo Patrol Sais-Trenta (630 kHz Metro Manila) is the flagship AM station of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in the Philippines. The station's studio is located at the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City, while its transmitter is located at Obando, Bulacan. The station manager is Angelo Palmones and the station operates 24 hours a day.

At present, DZMM is considered as one of the top stations in the AM band in Metro Manila and is recognized as one of the most awarded radio stations in the Philippines.

DZMM is also simulcast via The Filipino Channel and also has a television channel on SkyCable named DZMM TeleRadyo where the studio and hosts of its programs can be seen by its listeners and viewers.

    Early years

The fall of the Marcos Regime brought about the return of ABS-CBN. In July 1986, then newly-formed Presidential Commission on Good Government turned two radio stations, DZWW and DZRR, back to ABS-CBN. DZWW was renamed DZMM and resumes broadcasting. Lito Balquiedra Jr., Vice-President for Radio, spearheaded the return of the giant network to the local broadcasting scene.

The network started recruiting both experienced and new employees. Their studios were initially located at Chronicle Building in Pasig (Where Benpress Corporation is currently located). After days of careful planning, DZMM was born, carrying the tagline "Ang Himpilan ng Malayang Mamamayan" (Station of the free citizen) on July 22, 1986.

Dely Magpayo was the first ever anchor to grace the airwaves of the station with her program Dear Tiya Dely, followed by other broadcast icons like Jun Ricafrente, Rene Jose, and Noli de Castro, as well as late greats Ernie Baron and Kuya Cesar.

Also, Knowledge Power, the first ever full-length program of the station was launched. It was also the country’s first-ever scholastic program on AM radio.

As it was in the past, DZMM held on the tradition of the stalwart ABS-CBN Radyo Patrol (field reporters) of the 60's and early 70's to further develop the station's capabilities in serving the public. Mr. Jun Ricafrente, one of the original members of the team, started training new recruits. The first to be hired were Claude Vitug, Emil Recometa, Lito Villarosa and Neil Ocampo.

In October 1986, the station was transferred to its current studios in the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City.

In 1987, the first ever tandem on local AM radio was introduced. Mel Tiangco and Jay Sonza were the host of Mel & Jay and immediately became a hit to the listeners and lasted for couple of years. It was also in the same year when DZMM build a remarkable roster of radio talents, including Korina Sanchez, the late Frankie Evangelista, and Neil Ocampo.

It was also in this year when military insurgents took over the station. However, this did not stop DZMM from delivering news to the public, the booth was moved to then undisclosed location and immediately resumed broadcasting.

Ted Failon joined DZMM’s roster of broadcasters in 1990 and had a program with the station entitled Gising Pilipinas.

    Public service on radio

In 1991, Aksyon Ngayon, the first ever program on AM radio devoted solely to public service was created. First anchored by Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon, Aksyon Ngayon immediately soared to the top of the ratings list. Because of the thousands of less-fortunate Kapamilyas flocking the station asking help from Aksyon Ngayon, the executives decided to create the DZMM Public Service Center, the first ever separate office exclusively created for public service by a local AM station. Currently, Aksyon Ngayon is being anchored by Mayor Alfredo Lim and Kaye Dacer.

On November 5, 1993, DZMM launched Pulis, Pulis Kung Umaksiyon, Mabilis. The program was first anchored by broadcast icons, Kabayan Noli de Castro, Jay Sonza, and Mel Tiangco. It was created to keep the public informed on the activities of the Philippine National Police. It also became a venue for comments and grievances of the listening public on issues concerning the law enforcers.

In 1995, DZMM won the KBP Golden Dove awards for the Best AM Radio Station. It was also on the same year when DZMM produced the award-winning Radio Documentary, Ang Kasaysayan ng Radyo sa Pilipinas – the first ever radio special that won three major awards from three celebrated award-giving bodies. The documentary was conferred with the Lorenzo Ruiz award by the CMMA, Best Radio Program Promoting the Culture and the Arts by KBP, and Best Radio Program by the Golden Pearl Award.

DZMM once again was declared Best AM Radio Station by the KBP Golden Dove Awards in 1996. In November 5, Jeep ni Erap was formally launched on DZMM. The then vice-president Joseph Estrada himself anchored the program that tackled issues concerning the masses.

Also, in 1996, DZMM became the first local AM station to be made available in the World Wide Web with its inclusion in the ABS-CBN website. All programs of the stations are broadcast live and can be enjoyed by all Filipinos around the world via The Filipino Channel (TFC).

    New Slogan, Sky Patrol

In 1998, from Himpilan ng Malayang Mamamayan, DZMM, under the leadership of then Vice-President for Radio Network Division Kabayan Noli de Castro, was re-launched as DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 with a much stronger and bolder battle cry, "Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service".

DZMM ranked first among all AM radio stations in 1998. For the fourth year in a row, it won the KBP Golden Dove Award for Best AM Radio Station. In its continuing effort to help our less-fortunate Kapamilyas, DZMM staged the first ever OPLAN MM or Malusog at Malakas na Mamamayan. This event was first held at Sta. Cruz, Manila where 1500 residents were given medical and dental care. In June 11, DZMM aired its centennial special titled, Ang Media at ang Kasarinlan.

In September 14, 1998, ABS-CBN Sky Patrol, the first ever news chopper in the country, was launched. Anchored by Ricky Velasco, Sky Patrol changed the way of delivering and gathering news. ABS-CBN Sky Patrol is the news chopper of DZMM, ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN News Channel.

The station's Iwas Dagdag-Bawas and Oplan MM ‘98 campaigns were cited as Outstanding Public Service Messages by the prestigious AdBoard Araw Values Awards 1998, besting more than 100 entries from different advertising companies and broadcast networks.

In February 2001, the last episodes of 'Kabayan (Kapangyarihan ng Mamamayan, Balita at Talakayan) aired. At the time, it was DZMM’s top-rating radio program anchored by Noli de Castro. The show had to end its run in order to allow de Castro to run for the Senate.

Also in 2001, DZMM celebrated its 15th anniversary of broadcasting on-air with its richly deserved tagline, "Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service". It was also on the same year when the station tapped the power of text messaging with DZMM TxtPatrol. This technology enabled the listeners to voice out their concerns faster and easier.

DZMM’s trademark drama theatre aired weekday afternoons, changing the way people perceived radio drama. The drama theatre featured the real life-stories of DZMM anchors like Bro. Jun Banaag, Joey Galvez, Sen. Alfredo Lim, and other personalities. It was also on the same year when Sports Talk was launched. This jam-packed sports-oriented program won CMMA’s Best Sports Program on its first year of airing.

In 2005, listeners’ first heard the DZMM theme. It was composed by Jessie Lasaten, with words of Bing Palao, Robert Labayen, and Peter Musngi (now ABS-CBN's Vice President for Radio), and sang by Reuben Laurente, a former member of the music group The Company.

On February 7, 2006, SikaPinoy was conferred with the Anvil Award of Merit by the celebrated Anvil Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP).

    20 years

It was also in 2006 when DZMM celebrated its 20th Anniversary in Araneta Coliseum with a bang- dubbed as Happy 20 DZMM. The theme of DZMM was given a different twist with the Megastar- Sharon Cuneta singing the anthem.

    More awards in 2007

In 2007, DZMM continued to be the most awarded radio station in the Philippines after reaping awards from the different award-giving bodies in the country and even abroad.

Dean Amado Valdez graduated from the UE College of Law. He pursued his Masters in Business Economics degree at the University of Asia and the Pacific. He then took up special studies in International Business Law at the National University of Singapore and the Asian Institute of Management. He was also conferred a Degree of Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, by the Laguna State Polytechnic University.

His real passion is legal aid work. As Director of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in 1999, he implemented nationwide legal aid programs such as decongestion of jails, training of paralegals, conference for the protection of women and children, and improvement of barangay justice system. Likewise it was during his incumbency that the IBP commenced the Drug Watch.

In 2000, he served as the Dean of the University of the East College of Law, and was involved as one of the original private prosecutors in the impeachment trial of then President Joseph Estrada. In 2001, he was the Government Corporate Counsel with the rank of Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeals. In 1987, Angelo Palmones graduated from Notre Dame College of Kidapawan where he finished a degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Major in Economics. He then worked in a local radio station in Cotabato. He also worked for DZXL Radio Mindanao Network, before moving to DZMM where he became the News Manager in 1994. Through his perseverance and professionalism, he rose from ranks, and is currently DZMM’s Station Manager and Director for Special Projects of the Manila Radio Division. He is also the anchor of DZMM’s Radyo Patrol Balita Alas Dose, Usapang de Campanilla and Bago Yan Ah.

Dubbed as Mr. Science and Technology, “Kuya” as he is fondly called, believes that through science, there is hope for the Philippines; but because of the so-called “Digital Divide” most people, especially in remote areas of the country, cannot grasp those scientific innovations. Angelo believes that through radio he can bridge this gap by explaining science and technology in a way that can be easily understood. Thus, DZMM’s “Bago Yan Ah!” was born.

For over a decade now, he has educated millions of the uninformed poor and has empowered diverse audiences to become more productive through the utilization of technological advances and scientific methodologies. He has also mastered simplifying complex subjects into more comprehensible and interesting discussions. Through his efforts, “Bago Yan Ah!” has been recognized by various award-giving institutions in the country.

Through his leadership, DZMM continues to be the undisputed number 1 AM station in the country. He manages his staff through turbulent times, and is able to produce excellent programs year after year despite limited resources and manpower.

Angelo initiated a number of projects, including “Oplan MM (Malusog na Mamamayan medical mission)” and “Takbo Para sa Kalikasan.” He has written and published four books, and he is currently teaching at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman.

Angelo was KBP’s Golden Dove Awards Best Public Affairs Host in 2001 and Best Newscaster in 2002 and 2004.

Radyo Patrol 28, Anthony Taberna, “Tunying” to his friends and colleagues, a proud son of Nueva Ecija, has already accomplished a lot in the broadcasting industry at the young age of 33.

He started young in the industry. Anthony was 17 years old and a Mass Communication sophomore at New Era University when he had the opportunity to work as a part-time news writer at DZEC, operated by Eagle Broadcasting Corporation. It was at this station that Anthony honed his journalistic skills and masterfully crafted his talent before a DZMM news manager took notice of him.

In 1997, Anthony transferred to DZMM after he was offered a slot with the Radyo Patrol reportorial group. As a reporter, he covered all the major beats – from Malacanang, to the Senate, House of Representatives, the Supreme Court to name a few.

In 2005, Anthony became the first recipient of the Best Radio Reporter award at the KBP Golden Dove. Indeed, this citation was well-deserved as he was the reporter who aired the content of the infamous Hello Garci recording – one of the most scandalous issues that hit our political scene in the past several years. This feat was followed by his reports from inside the San Carlos Seminary when Attorney Samuel Ong said to have had what he called the ‘mother of all tapes’, referring to the Hello Garci recording. He also proved his versatility when he gave a blow by blow account of Manny Pacquiao’s fight from ringside in Las Vegas.

Recognizing his talents, management tapped Anthony to anchor the developmental program, Ito ang Radyo Patrol, with his current on air partner, Gerry Baja. Together with Gerry, he then moved on to do Gising Pilipinas. It was while anchoring this program, Dos por Dos, a hard hitting program, was born. His incisive analysis of issues and hard-hitting commentary made Anthony a household name and also paved the way for a career on television via Magandang Umaga Pilipinas, which is now Umagang Kayganda.

Experience has honed Ariel Ureta to be what he is today. A very well-known host and personality, he has hosted pageants – both local and international, political gatherings and other special events happening in the country. He is able discuss almost any topic under the sun…comprehensively and creatively.

In Todo Todo Walang Preno, Ariel is fond of sharing ideas that may serve as learning opportunities to the listeners.

    Undisputed leadership through public service

Pioneering and unwavering. A full score of years driven by a fervent mission for truth and public service, manifested not only through much-coveted awards, but more importantly, through the voice of the people. Throughout its history, DZMM proves to be first in ground-breaking reportage; spearheading remarkable campaigns and plunging head-on even into the most perilous, newsworthy events in a heartbeat.

In July, five months after the fall of the Marcos regime, ABS-CBN makes a comeback. The newly-formed PCGG turns two radio stations, DWWW and DWOK-FM, back to ABS-CBN, and DWWW is renamed DZMM carrying the tagline “ANG HIMPILAN NG MALAYANG MAMAMAYAN.”

Tiya Dely Magpayo is the first-ever anchor to grace the airwaves and broadcast live from the Chronicle Building in Pasig.

DZMM starts building a remarkable roster of broadcasters including Korina Sanchez, Frankie Evangelista and Neil Ocampo.

In July, DZMM stages its first-ever FREE Medical and Dental Clinic helping over 200 indigents.

Radyo Patrol reporters provide the most comprehensive coverage of the Dońa Paz sea tragedy.

Radyo Patrol reporters prove their reliability in the unforgettable coverage of the numerous coup attempts, year-long typhoon tragedies, and death of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Ted Failon joins DZMM’s roster of top-notch broadcasters, changing the AM landscape with his distinct and refined style of broadcasting first heard on a 2-4AM timeslot.

DZMM airs a comprehensive coverage of the killer earthquake that devastated the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Bauio, Tarlac, Nueva Viscaya and Metro Manila.

DZMM gives a vivid picture of events around the world, like the Gulf War.

    1991 - 2000

“Aksyon Ngayon,” the first ever DZMM program dedicated to public service, immediately soars to the top of the ratings list.

DZMM tops all other AM Radio stations in the metro in the Philippine Survey Research Council.
