Would you fulfill your dying sister's wish to give her child a normal life if she's a prodigy just like her mom? Frank Adler is definitely torn - all for the sake of her beloved niece.

Gifted is a 2017 drama film by Marc Webb, starring Chris Evans and Mckenna Grace as Frank and Mary Adler, an uncle-and-niece tandem residing in Tampa. The movie basically revolves around Mary, who lost her mom to an unfortunate suicide incident despite having a decorated life as one of the world's top mathematician.

Apparently, Mary inherited her mom's numerical prowess and was discovered by Bonnie Stevenson (Jenny Slate), the prodigy's teacher in a local school. Mary was offered a scholarship for advanced studies but Frank, as Mary's legal guardian, declined it primarily to fulfill her sister's dying wish - give Mary a decent and normal life.

Consequently, Evelyn Adler (Lindsay Duncan), Mary's grand mom and Frank's mother, found out Mary's mental giftedness and engaged his son to the court in a battle for custody, banking on the premise that the environment Frank provides for Mary isn't adequate enough. This starts the turn of events that will lead Frank to ask himself - is he really a worthy guardian to his niece, and more importantly, will he be able to fulfill her sister's wish?

The movie gave importance to a child's secure future, while it did not run out of conflict as to highlight Frank's selfish desires to keep the child. Although the movie did not fall short of comedy strides to keep the mood light despite the weight of the story, it did not overshadow the focus of the story between Frank, Mary and her future.

Similarly, Gifted was adequately backed up with a convincing supporting cast, most especially Octavia Spencer (Adler's neighbor) and Glenn Plummer (Adler's lawyer). Spencer provided the motherly presence the story lacked while Plummer gave the glimmer of hope amidst Frank's slim chances in the court.

Gifted is a good movie discussing how to deal with children beyond our grasp - what do they really need as they are deemed special and “gifted”. Moreover, the movie is a good eye-opener to elderlies who tend to neglect their children's needs in exchange to academic glories only them are actually proud of.

    Rating: 9/10
