MANILA, Philippines — The United States remained the most trusted country of Filipinos while China and Russia were the least, the latest Pulse Asia survey released Monday showed.

The survey, conducted from December 14 to 21, showed that 84 percent of Filipinos said they trusted the United States.

Despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s friendly stance with China, more than half of Filipinos or 60 percent distrust China.

More than half of the respondents or 54 percent said “a little or no trust at all” should be extended to Russia.

Aside from the US, Filipinos trust countries like Japan (75 percent), Great Britain (57 percent) and regional organizations such as Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN (82 percent) and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation or APEC (80 percent).

  • Palace hopes Pinoys’ sentiment towards China will change for better: Sincere naman sila!

Malacanang expressed optimism that Filipinos will soon trust China more than they trust the United States.

Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made this remark after a Pulse Asia survey showed that the United States was the most trusted country for among Filipinos (84 percent) while China was the least at 60 percent.

In a media briefing on Monday, Panelo said the survey result was “understandable,” noting that the United States and the Philippines have been long-time allies.

“We’ve been used to the United States being our ally. Mas sanay tayo sa America. As we go along at nakita na ‘yung sincerity ng China with respect to agreements between the two countries, eh baka mabago ang kanilang pananaw,” the Palace official explained.

He added, “It takes some time for people to accept certain changes that they are not used to it.”

Last month, the United States returned the three war-trophy Balangiga church bells to the Philippines after 117 years in its possession.

In November 2018, the Philippines and China signed a total of 29 trade agreements during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Manila.
