2nd movie I've seen directed by Bernardo, I wanted to see if it was at par with Kita Kita but it came up short. Santos and Cenon are good artists, I just didnt feel the chemistry, I didnt find myself rooting for them to be together at the end of the movie. But I liked how thorough they dissected the plot and the story behind the two leads.

Unlike most annoying purists, I can separate books from their film counterparts. I didn't have the opportunity to reread the book which led to me thoroughly enjoying the film, regardless of deviations from its source material. It could be a light weekend adventure film or a thought-provoking one if you consider embedded ethical and moral dilemmas. I commend the talented rising stars, except the Korean who ruined my favorite character. Fitting end to this well-loved franchise.

Comments: I found the first 2/3 boring. It took me three days to finish the film. At times, I felt I am watching the animated version of The Whale Rider. The pirate scene is my favorite part. Other than that, the film is too cliche.

(full review)

I didnt like the first one, but thought I should give this second one a chance. In the end, I hard passed on third and just read the summary on moviespoiler website, then watched Changing Partners instead. The movie overall was decently made, it's just the main character and story that sucked to me.

The fact that it contains 8 characters played by 4 people with 4 different stories and settings, interwoven by their similarities but still has that distinct little details that separates it from the rest while the plot was linearly running, is just simply amazing. And they sing while doing it. Jojit Lorenzo was a pleasant surprise, he delivers the script effortlessly.

(full movie)

Comments: I was not a fan of Knight of Cups so this one was also another “eh”. I guess it’s not my cup of tea; Terrence Malick films are just not for me. He likes montage and soliloquys but not in an interesting way. It’s like watching a flow of consciousness of another person. I just read the blurb and thought the story was interesting and failed to look who directed the movie. :hiya:

Ive been meaning to watch this movie for a long time, it was recommended by almost everyone. I found it okay, felt less fictionalized and dramatized. At first I was distracted by Gordon-Levitt's change of voice, it took me a little while to get used to.

Comments: The ensemble is great and I like that it was black and white. I don't know if it's based on a play but it felt like it. It reminded me of Sydney Theater Company's The Present although I haven't seen it. Just the premise is a bit similar but with older characters in The Party. It just lacked some punch for me, especially the second half.

    Comment:
Outstanding movie and outstanding characterization by Gary Oldman.

Currently his acting has been lauded by award giving bodies.

check out this monologue in the film:

"Turning once again--to the question of invasion--I would observe that there has never been a period in all these long centuries of which we boast, when an absolute guarantee against invasion could have been given to our people.

I have, myself--full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once more able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny -

    - if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government – every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France--we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island - whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; We shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old! "

Comments: I appreciate the ambition and the commentary on the value of art, but I was ultimately not satisfied. Did it have to be a musical? Save from a couple of songs, I felt like it would've been better without the music. They were mostly just talking except with melody. They couldn't throw in some choruses? But I'm not a musical expert so don't listen to me.

Anyway, the biggest kudos to Joanna Ampil, who carried the movie. Her Best Actress award is very well-deserved. It was also nice to see Dulce, Mikee, Nanette Inventor, etc. and disappointed (but not surprised) as I may be with the movie in general, it's a decent alternative to the slew of horror, romance and comedy blockbusters usually served to Filipinos.

I wanted to see if villamor and padilla tandem still work their magic, like they did in camp sawi. And deliver they did, with aquino as the cherry on top. It was a well balanced movie, no unnecessary lines, no exaggeration in acting, even the extras had done their part well. Kudos!
