Gearing Up for a Second Degree in Health & Wellness for Unemployed Nurses
Posted by: Byron Webb Romero, RN, MSN

August 25, 2011

“NURSES, NO JOBS YET? Then get a second degree in Health & Wellness in two years and join the booming hospitality tourism industry.” This is the heading of an advertisement by the country’s leading Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) school in major prints recently promoting its novel program Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management major in Health & Wellness (BS IHM-H&W).

The impact of the global financial crisis has brought a great turmoil in the nursing industry particularly in the Philippines. With high hopes of better work opportunities overseas, thousands have enrolled in the BS Nursing program which consequently resulted in the mushrooming of sub-standard nursing schools. But because many of the world’s economies are on a downward slope, thousands have also ended up being unemployed, or if they are employed there is a job mismatch. Contrary to the current situation of nursing and nurses being unemployed, the tourism industry is described as a “sunrise industry”, or a booming industry with world of careers and opportunities. And thus the evolution of the BS IHM-H&W degree program that aims to provide an alternative but complementing career to nursing graduates and nurses who are having difficulty finding a job in hospitals or other healthcare setting.

The BS IHM-H&W offered by the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) under its College of International Tourism & Hospitality Management (CITHM), is a two-year bachelor’s degree that prepares its graduates to be positioned for jobs in hotels, cruise ships, restaurants, spas, wellness, tourist centers and many others in the flourishing field of tourism through well-rounded education. LPU CITHM is gaining reputation as the most preferred tourism and HRM school despite stiff competition, mainly due to the school’s extensive practicum program whether local or overseas and specialized curriculum with its affiliation with Thailand’s Dusit Thani College, part of Thailand’s leading hotel chain Dusit Thani. For a clearer focus and to address the needs of its students, who are primarily nursing graduates or are registered nurses, classes of BS IHM-H&W are exclusive and separate from other undergraduate students. To cap it all, LPU-Manila will be opening The Bayleaf Hotel Intramuros to meet the demands of the industry as well as provide additional learning venues for its students.

What makes nurses fit for jobs in the tourism industry? Nurses are educated extensively both classroom and clinical. As such, nurses are well exposed to diverse population making them flexible in any work setting. Having health and wellness as the focus, nurses are in the best position to address these services. Nurses are also well equipped with communication skills, which is an important requirement in the tourism industry. The character of nurses imbibe caring and hospitality, the essential ingredients to attract tourists and guests. Many can be said on why nurses can succeed in the booming industry of tourism. And with the state of unemployment of nurses in the healthcare industry, the future is still bright with other alternatives.

Do you want to have your own perfume business?

Have you heard about FM Group fragrance? :) Their perfumes are imported from Poland. Inspired by the branded scents. Same po sa supplier ng mga signature scents like hugo boss, lacoste, giorgio armani, estee lauder, etc. Kaya hindi ako nagsisi kasi I can buy my favorite perfume, which is D&G Light Blue at a lower price.

Not only are they cheaper. They are better. Most colognes/perfumes at the department store is Eau de Toilette only (1-7%). Our are at least Eau de Parfum (8-15%). Don't be fooled by the fancy box. Most of them are made by the same factory: Drom- who also supplies for Perfand, which makes the perfumes we sell at FM.

For as low as P580, pwede na po magregister and then start ng mag business. :)

If you are interested, just PM me. Or reply in this thread :)

    Company profile:

The FM Group Fragrance is looking for people who want more from life, more control, more free time, more than just making a living! People, maybe just like you, who are willing to learn a new way of doing things, who are ready to explore their abilities and to reach out for new horizons. Whatever your priority the FM Group business can provide you with a realistic opportunity to achieve your personal and financial goals. The facts are that our business is in the incredibly fast growing industry of Perfumes & Cosmetics and that our high quality, low priced exclusive European products guarantee you the perfect opportunity to have great success and many happy customers. Sure nurses can do medical billing and coding but not with that salary. I think your figure is US-based.

Also, try other healthcare-related fields like public health/community development, NGO's dedicated to health advocacy (like AIDS Society, etc), research scientist, and even call centers but with RN role (like the one on this subforum advertising for USRN).

And if you have the resources, pursue non-nursing but health-related graduate studies (MPH, Health Informatics, Health Social Science, etc).

P10,000 Pesos Na Extra Income Lingo-Lingo
Gamit Ang Internet Kahit Nasa Bahay Ka Lang"

    Hi,

Internet user ka din ba? (Bakit?...)

Malaking

JOIN ME sa pag yaman! Makakatulong ka na kikita ka pa! God Bless us all! Hope to be your ka-WEALTH TEAM SOON!
