It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce Sonic to a whole new generation of potential fans of the character and of the games.

Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and the rest of the gang are back for the sequel of the 2020 film adaptation of one of Sega's most popular titles. But just like the first movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is made more for the kids than for fans of the video game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes off from where we left our characters at the end of the first movie. Sonic is adjusting to life on Earth with his new family. Tom and Maddie have never been happier. And Robotnik is trying everything he could to get off the mushroom planet where he's stuck. Even with all these, an adventure was bound to happen with the introduction of Tails and Knuckles in the picture.
To be honest, there's really nothing special with the second movie (which is not at all different from what the first one was). The story resembles not a single thing we've seen in the video games nor anything we've grown to love from the many Sonic cartoons. What they actually served us is a typical comedy film spruced up with a few elements of fantasy, and of course by introducing Sonic the Hedgehog characters as part of the cast.
In terms of the story, it follows the typical flow we've all seen in most comedy films. Everything is predictable. The kind of banters it served were expected. But that is not to say that quips weren’t funny. It’s just that the best laughs were drawn by scenes that featured Natasha Rothwell who plays Rachel (the sister of Tika Sumpter’s Maddie). It was a bit disappointing that the capabilities of a juggernaut like Carrey wasn’t fully utilized. And we all know that Jim can make a crowd go wild when left to his own devices.
Overall, despite being too ordinary, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an enjoyable film to watch with the entire family. It’s not a very memorable movie but it will definitely give you the laugh you needed. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce Sonic to a whole new generation of potential fans of the character and of the games.
