WHO Chief, a Chinese Lackey?

The head of the World Health Organization, in charge of making life or death decisions on a grand scale, has been accused of covering up cholera epidemics, supporting a terrorist organization and inflating his resume to claim he conquered malaria and HIV.

Tedros Adhanom Ghegreyesus' campaign to rewrite his questionable past has some wondering whether he is the right fit to lead the global agency through the coronavirus pandemic.

"Tedros is the second-to-last person who should be heading the world World Health Organization at this time," foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang told Fox News. "The last person is (Chinese President) Xi Jinping."

The Ethiopian official, who was elected to lead the WHO in 2017, has been accused of cozying up to countries like China that have pledged millions of dollars to the agency.

Last week, Tedros applauded Xi for his efforts to contain and control the novel coronavirus that is widely thought to have originated in a Wuhan, China seafood market.

"For the first time, #China has reported no domestic #COVID19 cases yesterday. This is an amazing achievement, which gives us all reassurance that the #coronavirus can be beaten," Tedros tweeted.

Beijing has been accused of multiple cover-ups related to COVID-19 and health experts have said China's decision to suppress information about the virus has endangered the lives of millions around the world.

"Tedros permitted Xi Jinping to make public health decisions for the World Health Organization, and that slowed down the global response to the coronavirus outbreak at crucial moments," Chang said. "Moreover, Tedros, by making comments supporting the totalitarian form of rule over democracy, made himself a part of Xi's campaign to bring despotism to the planet. Democracies should defund WHO if Tedros stays."

Earlier this week, Tedros praised President Trump for his leadership skills in addressing the global pandemic.

Despite the compliments to China and the United States, the number of cases has skyrocketed.

As of Friday, 542,788 people have tested positive for the coronavirus. Of those, 24.361 have died.

Tedros, the first African picked to lead the international health agency, has been under a microscope for years. And his rise to power hasn't been an easy one.

He landed his current job after three rounds of secret-ballot voting where he knocked out Dr. Sania Nishtar, of Pakistan, and Dr. David Nabarro, of Britain.

Just ahead of the vote, Tedros was accused of covering up three cholera epidemics in Ethiopia when he was health minister. Tedros denied the allegations and claimed they were made as part of a "last-minute smear campaign" against him.

At the time, Lawrence Gostin, the director of the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, called out Ethiopia's long history of denying cholera outbreaks even as they were going through them and said some of those outbreaks took place on Tedros' watch. Gostin said he went public with his concerns because he feared that with Tedros at the helm of the WHO, the agency "might lose its legitimacy."

In an interview with The New York Times, Tedros denied covering up cholera outbreaks in 2006, 2009 and 2011, and said the cases of suspected cholera were actually cases of "acute watery diarrhea" that occurred in remote areas of the country where testing is "difficult."

The Guardian and The Washington Post have both reported that unnamed Ethiopian officials were putting pressure on aid agencies to stop using the word "cholera" and to not report the number of people affected by it during earlier outbreaks.

Born in 1965 in Asmara, which became Eritrea's capital after its independence from Ethiopia in 1991, Tedros grew up in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region. After his younger brother died from the measles, he vowed to push for universal health coverage.

Tedros became a member of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which began a protracted rebellion against the military government and was crucial in the 1991 overthrow of Mengistu Haile Mariam, Ethiopia's Marxist dictator. The victory resulted in swapping out a Amhara-dominated government with one led by Tigray leaders, which led to more than a decade of conflict.

Journalist Abebe Gellaw claims Tedros was one of the top three members of the TPLF and that the party is "ultimately responsible for all the corruption, killings, torture, mass detention, land grab or displacement," he wrote in the Ethiopian Registrar.

The United States State Department has categorized TPLF as a terrorist organization due to its "violent activities before it became part of the ruling coalition and the government of Ethiopia in May 1991."

Gellaw has also accused Tedros of using a U.S.-based lobbying firm to inflate his resume.

"He is hyping up his dubious successes: conquered malaria, destroyed HIV, reduced infant mortality, built thousands and thousands of clinics," Gellaw wrote, adding, "They never talk about the reality behind those exaggerated figures."

Martha McSally Urges WHO Director to Resign over Coronavirus

    2 Apr 2020322

Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) on Thursday called on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) director-general to resign over the organization’s management of the coronavirus and the WHO’s concealment of China’s failure to contain it.

McSally called on Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to resign over the WHO’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China, saying on Fox Business:

I’ve never trusted a communist. And their cover-up of this virus that originated with them has caused unnecessary deaths around America and around the world. The WHO needs to stop covering for them. I think Dr. Tedros needs to step down. We need to take some action to address this issue. It’s just irresponsible. It’s unconscionable what they have done here while we have people dying across the globe:

McSally’s comment follows Sen. Rick Scott’s (R-FL) call for Congress to hold a hearing and investigate the WHO’s role in helping China conceal the threat of the coronavirus.

    Scott said:

The mission of the WHO is to get public health information to the world so every country can make the best decisions to keep their citizens safe. When it comes to coronavirus, the WHO failed. They need to be held accountable for their role in promoting misinformation and helping Communist China cover up a global pandemic. We know Communist China is lying about how many cases and deaths they have, what they knew, and when they knew it – and the WHO never bothered to investigate further. Their inaction cost lives.

Aylward reportedly refused to answer if Taiwan would be allowed to join the WHO.

The WHO echoed reports from Chinese authorities, claiming in January that there is “no clear” evidence of human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus:

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan#China🇳. pic.twitter.com/Fnl5P877VG

    — World Health Organization (WHO) (@WHO)January 14, 2020

    Scott added:

As soon as Congress is back in session, there should be a hearing, along with a full investigation, to review whether American taxpayers should continue to spend millions of dollars every year to fund an organization that willfully parroted propaganda from the Chinese Communist Party.

“The @WHO receives millions of dollars in US taxpayer $$ and helped the Chinese Communist Party cover up a global pandemic,” Scott wrote on Tuesday.

Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister Says The WHO Should Change Name To The China Health Organization

Japan’s deputy prime minister lobbed insults Wednesday at the World Health Organization, saying they are parroting Chinese propaganda and should change their name to the China Health Organization.

“People think the World Health Organization should change its name,” Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso said, according to translators. “It shouldn’t be called the WHO, it should be renamed the CHO.”

The incident comes after reports that China intentionally misled the world by downplaying the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the country. The WHO sent Assistant Director-General Bruce Aylward on a “fact-finding” mission to China in February, where he resoundingly praised China’s efforts, only for for it to be revealed that China hadn’t been counting mild or asymptomatic cases in its data, among other things.

China has officially reported 82,000 cases and 3,300 deaths, lower than some nations whose outbreaks started later, such as the U.S. Wuhan, where the virus first broke out, reported 2,535 deaths, but over the course of two days during the crisis, just one of the city’s eight mortuaries received shipments of 5,000 urns to carry ashes of the deceased, according to Shanghaiist.

The mortuary plans to release urns at a rate of 500 per day until April 4. If the city’s seven other mortuaries are adopting the same policy, that would total 40,000 urns, starting with the first confirmed delivery on March 26.

Aylward himself was thrust into the public spotlight last week after he appeared to pretend he couldn’t hear a reporter when she implied Taiwan was a separate country from China. He cancelled the call when she repeated the question

Taiwan is one of the few Western-style democracies near China, and China’s communist government has long insisted that the international community treat Taiwan as a part of “greater China,” despite having separate governments.

The WHO  does not allow Taiwan to be a member state. The reporter asked whether that policy might change during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Will the WHO reconsider Taiwan’s membership?” the reporter asked.

The footage shows that Aylward initially doesn’t react, appearing to pretend he couldn’t hear the question. When the reporter prompts him again, he claims outright he didn’t hear the question, but quickly requests that she “move on to another one.”

When the reporter asks the question again Alyward canceled the call.

    China’s deadly coronavirus-lie co-conspirator — the World Health Organization

The fog of war obscures much about the novel coronavirus pandemic. But two facts seem absolutely certain. First, China’s Communist authorities have lied, concealed and misled about the origins of the epidemic and the toll of the virus in China. Second, the World Health Organization has acted as Beijing’s handmaid.

The result: The global toll of the tragedy will be much greater than it need have been.

We shouldn’t be surprised that the Beijing regime lies about the epidemic: It lies about, well, everything. From economic data to air pollution figures, the Communist Party doctors information to protect and promote itself.

Naturally, in the face of a grave national health threat, the incentive for dissembling was tremendous. So Beijing spun and suppressed information about the outbreak and impact of the coronavirus.

Independent Chinese journalists have detailed the Wuhan cover-up: They report that a Chinese lab isolated and identified the strange new virus last December — but that the authorities ordered it to stop its work, get rid of its specimens and keep quiet. It took almost another month for the government to acknowledge that a SARS-like contagion, spread by human contact, was exploding in Hubei province.

When the late Dr. Li Wenliang, the heroic whistleblower, tried to warn the public about the coronavirus, he was detained, charged with “spreading false rumors” and accused of “seriously disrupting social order.” All discussion about the virus is now censored.

As for China’s official figures on cases and deaths: These are obviously an undercount, possibly a preposterous one. Regarding prevalence: China’s health numbers didn’t even count infected patients if they tested positive but remained asymptomatic.

Concerning deaths: News reports indicate that delivery of funeral urns has spiked in Wuhan, the epicenter of the pandemic. Whereas Beijing currently admits to some 3,300 coronavirus fatalities nationwide, Chinese netizens cited by Radio Free Asia are claiming the Wuhan tally alone is far higher than that.

One widely circulating guess is that the true figure is closer to 40,000. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s scientific advisers have concluded that paramount leader Xi Jinping’s regime has downplayed the true number of cases in China “by 15 to 40 times.” As Bloomberg reported this week, the US intelligence community has likewise informed the White House that China’s reported infection and death totals are implausibly low.

Then there is the Communist Party’s active disinformation campaign abroad. This month, for example, in a tweet that garnered 160 million views, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson suggested that the coronavirus might actually be American in origin — brought to Wuhan by the US military!

Which brings us to the WHO’s malfeasance in this affair. The WHO should have known at the outset that it was dealing with a bad-faith actor in Beijing. Yet instead of immediately insisting upon access, openness and transparency from China, WHO leadership followed the Chinese lead and at times even took the Chinese line.

The incompetent and useless WHO chief must resign!

Senate Homeland Security Committee member Rick Scott, R-Fla., told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Monday Congress must investigate the World Health Organization over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Scott accused the global health agency of doing "work for Communist China."

"At first they said in a tweet [Jan. 14] that there was no evidence that there was human to human transmission. Lie. Then they said on the 20th or something, 'China's doing a great job'. Lie," Scott said.

The U.S. taxpayers contributed $513 million to the WHO in 2017, up from $341 million the prior year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Scott noted that WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, claimed President Trump's move to restrict travel from China at the end of January would create "fear and stigma with little health benefit."

"When Trump did the right thing by doing the travel ban they attacked Trump for doing the wrong thing," he said. "I asked them [the WHO] to do an investigation of China back in February ... [and] if they had done their job, everyone would have gotten more ready, we wouldn't have shut down this economy and we wouldn't have all these people dead all over the world."

"So I want an investigation," Scott went on. "I am on [the] Homeland Security [committee], I talked to the chairman [Sen.] Ron Johnson [,R-Wis.], he's agreed to do it. We are going to investigate why did they do what they did, what was their purpose and then why are we as American taxpayers giving them some of our dollars."

Scott is the latest Republican lawmaker to demand  Tedros step down as director general.

Last week, Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria" that she has "never trusted a communist" and added that the Chinese government's "cover-up of this virus that originated with them has caused unnecessary deaths around America and around the world ... I think Dr. Tedros needs to step down."

McSally stepped up her criticism Friday, saying: "Dr. Tedros deceived the world. At one point, he even praised China's 'transparency during its coronavirus response efforts' despite a mountain of evidence showing the regime concealed the severity of the outbreak. This deception cost lives. "

Fox News' Tyler Olson contributed to this report.

Donald Trump Announces Hold on World Health Organization Funding

    White House
    Volume 56%
    7 Apr 20204435

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday at the White House that he would put a hold on funding to the World Health Organization amid the coronavirus crisis.

“They were wrong about a lot of things,” Trump said.

The president noted that the World Health Organization receives more from the United States than any other country, and would require accounting for their failure to properly alarm the world about the coronavirus outbreak.

“We want to look into the World Health Organization because they really called it wrong,” Trump said. “They missed the call, they could have called it months earlier, they would have known, they should have known, and they probably did know.”

The president noted that the WHO actually criticized his travel ban from China that he set in late January.

“Such restrictions can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said about travel bans just days after Trump banned travel from China.

Trump said the WHO frequently sided with China despite heavy criticism for their lack of transparency about the virus.

“They seem to be very China-centric,” he said. “That’s a nice way of saying it, but they seem to be very China-centric, and they seem to err always on the side of China.”

Trump accused the global organization of also getting a lot wrong about the virus.

“It’s a great thing when it works, but when they call every shot wrong, it’s no good,” he said.

Later in the briefing, reporters asked why he would freeze funding to the WHO in the middle of a pandemic.

“I’m not saying I’m going to do it. But we’re going to look at it,” the president said.
