UP beats Harvard in university rankings for health research citation
The University of the Philippines (UP) scored high in terms of health research citations in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
With a score of 98.8 for citations in clinical and pre-clinical health researches, UP is among the top 10, outranking prestigious universities abroad such as Harvard University, the University of Oxford and Stanford University.
The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) explained that “citation scores” are based on the frequency of a university’s research projects being cited in other research outputs. It indicates the impact or influence of its research projects.
Topping the ranking for citations in clinical and pre-clinical health researches is Tokyo Metropolitan University (Japan), followed by Aukland University of Technology (New Zealand). UP ranked seventh after Metropolitan Autonomous University (Mexico), Jordan University of Science and Technology (Jordan), University of Canberra (Australia), and Anglia Ruskin University (United Kingdom).
Harvard University, despite ranking sixth in the overall World University Rankings, was in 37th place with a health citations score of 87.4. It ranked second for the overall score in the subject of clinical and pre-clinical health, which highlights universities that are leading across medicine, dentistry and other health subjects.
UP ranked 95th in the Asia University Rankings for 2019, 501 to 600th for the World University Rankings and 126-150th for the subject of clinical and pre-clinical health.
Of the different criteria, UP ranked high in research citations, with its citations showing an upward trajectory from 2017 and 2018.
PCHRD said it has “supported projects from UP in the fields of genomics, diagnostics, and drug discovery, among others.”
