  • This news was already making rounds last year
  • Ruru Madrid was reported to be playing the male lead role

GMA Network is now set to produce a Philippine live-action adaptation of the popular 1977 Japanese animated series, Voltes VReports of an adaptation have been circulating since last year.

The super robot series is formally known as Chouednji (Super Electromagnetic) Machine Voltes Five. This first aired on TV Asahi in 1977 and was created by Saburo Yatsude, directed by Tadao Nagahama and produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Its story revolves around five young pilots on their quest to defend the Earth from the alien invaders called Boazanians.

This news came out in various Philippine newspapers including the widely-read tabloid Abante and it was reported that GMA Network star Mikee Quintos and Kyline Alcantara were going to star in the adaptation.

“May bagong series na gagawin si Mikee. Ito ay ang Philippine adaptation ng animated Japanese series na Voltes V. Isa sa makakasama niya ay si Kyline Alcantara,” Abante entertainment reporter Jun Nardo said in his column “I Know Better” last June 27, 2019.

Last year, Philippine tabloid Pilipino Star Ngayon(PSN) also reported that GMA Network resident director Mark Reyes, who is known for previous projects like Encantadia and Mulawin The Movie, will head the project.

Kapuso star Ruru Madrid was also reported by PSN to be one of the cast members of Voltes V live action and specifically will star in the lead role of Ken’ichi Go (Steve Armstrong), the Voltes V team leader.

The Abante reporter said the network giant is also planning to include the StarStruck Season 7winner in the cast of the live-action series.

The other cast members and crucial details about the Philippine live adaption have yet to be announced.

The Voltes V franchise is under Telesuccess Productions, Inc. in the Philippines. Voltes V is a property of Toei Company Ltd. It was first aired on GMA in English on May 5, 1978.

However, on August 27, 1979, late President Ferdinand Marcos banned all robot shows including Voltes V via Interim Board of Censors for Motion Pictures (IBCMP) Memorandum-Circular No. 13-79 citing the shows’ “harmful effects on children.”

Fortunately in 1999, it was re-aired by GMA in the English and Tagalog dub.

In 2017, in celebration of the anime’s 40th anniversary, a new Tagalog dub of Voltes Vreturned to GMA with a celebrity cast that included Bea Binene, Derrick Monasterio, Jak Roberto, Hiro Peralta, and Ken Chan.

    Voltes V is getting a locally-made live-action adaptation!

Voltes V may be a Japanese import, but we all grew up watching the Voltes Team fight alien invaders from planet Boazan. Each day, many generations of Filipino kids tuned in to watch Ken’ichi, Daijiro, Hiyoshi, Megumi, and Ippei Mine volt in to fight evil.

Its cultural influence is so powerful that many people still watch reruns of the show, while others collect memorabilia. Now, we’ll get to see another iteration as GMA is set to do a live-action adaptation.

Rumors have swirled about the reboot as early as last year, with Ruru Madrid attached to the project. Now, it looks confirmed as it was reported by Abante that Mikee Quintos and Kyline Alcantara will be part of the show.

There’s no word yet who else will join the cast or when it will air.

Pero in fairness, interesting kung pano nila to gagawin. Sana mala Flame of Recca or Ghost Fighter din

    • Netizens expressed their thoughts on the rumors that GMA Network will have a live action remake of the legendary anime series, Voltes V.
    • They stated different reasons as to why they don’t want another version of Voltes V.

Anime television series Voltes V is currently rumored to have a live action remake on GMA Network where the original anime was aired locally by the network in 1978.

The series, which was formerly known as Chouednji (Super Electromagnetic) Machine Voltes Five and was created by Saburo Yatsude. According to reports,Ruru Madrid will star as the lead role Ken’ichi Go, who is the Voltes V team leader or as Steve (English name).

Netizens reacted to the rumors. Edu Karlo Gagarin said that if the graphics are better than Victor Magtanggol‘s and the CG artists are not underpaied, he will definitely stop watching FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano for Voltes V.

Yari ka ngayon Cardo!!!!! Ahahaha.. I’ll definitely drop the overrated probinsyano..

A certain Jaypee said that the old version’s effects may be better than what GMA can provide.
Other Netizens also mentioned their dissatisfaction regarding the network’s graphics.
A Facebook user then expressed his stand against anything romantic in the storyline of Voltes V which another one agreed with.
Another Netizen commented a possible plot of GMA’s Voltes V.

    Speaking of cross-overs…

Gawin nio na lng amg Daimos. Atleast dun pde nio maipasok ang Mulawin

Meynard De Jesus Rodriguez claimed that the millennials will not appreciate the new Voltes V if ever it happens as the generation is too busy with their social media accounts.
Let it go. Only GenX like me will appreciate this but not millennials. GenX have moved on, Nobody will watch this. Everybody’s busy with their fb, insta
On the other hand, this girl suggested Jake Vargas as the male lead.
Please! Not RURU! Jake Vargas is the only guy who can fit to Steve Armstrong! and besides they are look a like..
Some expressed their opinions through memes.
Suzette Encabo suggested that GMA Network should study the historical reason why it was banned in the country in the first place.
Review first from the past why it was banned in the Philippines. Don’t underestimate the power of visual things that affect the young viewers.
She was referring to the order of the President Ferdinand Marcos banned the airing of the last four episodes of Voltes V due to alleged excessive violence. But according to the trivia page on the Anime News Network, “Many Filipinos believe Marcos was afraid that ‘Voltes V’s storyline involving an aristocratic empire and its oppressed masses reflected his dictatorship in the country.”
Voltes V re-aired on the channel in 1990.
