We are the world’s largest card issuer, the premium network for high-spending cardmembers, a processor of millions of transactions daily, and a partner that provides business-building services to a worldwide merchant base.

    What Makes Us Different

SPEND vs LEND. Unlike other card issuers, we earn most of our revenues from cardmember spending and the business we drive to merchants rather than from lending fees and revolving credit balances. Our spend-centric model; lower reliance on lending; and broad portfolio of products and services for consumers and B2B customers position us to earn attractive returns.

PREMIUM CUSTOMERS. We have the best customer base of any payments company. On average, our cardmembers spend about four times more than those of MasterCard and three-and-a-half times more than Visa. And we have the highest credit quality among major card issuers. We earn the loyalty of our high-spending customers by providing them with industry-leading products, services, rewards and benefits.

UNPARALLED SIGHTS. Our ability to capture, analyze and gain insights from the billions of transactions that flow through our network enables us to create value for consumers, merchants and business customers. With this information, which we strictly guard, we craft relevant and valuable offers for cardmembers, help our merchant partners attract customers, and identify ways for businesses to control expenses and manage payments.

SUPERIOR SERVICE. A global leader in customer service, we strive to understand our customers, treat them with respect, and go the extra mile to help them. Our commitment to customer service has also earned us many other honors for distinguished service worldwide.

A TRUSTED BRAND. American Express has one of the world’s most trusted and powerful brands. Our name stands for security, service and personal recognition. This reputation attracts customers and business partners, inspires our employees, and is valued by investors. Forged over 160 years of doing business, our brand continues to set us apart from the competition.

COMMUNITIES. There’s a reason why we call our customers cardmembers. We treat them as members of a special community of people who strive to achieve and live life to the fullest. Our cardmembers value the personal recognition they receive from American Express, from the Member Since date on their cards to the care they receive wherever they are, whenever they need us.

What is the historical background of American Express across the world and in the Philippines?

The express company that forwarded freight and valuables evolved into a company that created and sold financial products like money orders and travelers cheques. Following an era of international expansion, the company became an entity perhaps best known for its charge card. Today, American Express is a global payments company

The original company was founded on March 18, 1850, through the consolidation of three companies [Livingston, Fargo & Company (formerly Western Express, 1845), Wells & Co. (1845), and Butterfield & Wasson (1849)] active in the express transportof goods, valuables, and specie.

In 1882, American Express launched the money order business, which proved an almost instant success. In 1891, they introduced the world’s first traveller’s cheque. In 1915, they officially entered the travel business by providing luxury steamship travel around the world.

In 1958, the Card Business Era of American Express started as AMEXCO launched its first personal charge card (Green). And in 1966, American Express Gold Card was launched. And in 1984, they made waves as the first in the world to introduce their signature and highly coveted The Platinum Card®.

In early 1980s to early 1990s, American Express was known for cutting its interchange fee (also known as a "discount rate") to merchants and restaurants if they accepted only American Express and no other credit or charge cards. In 1991, a group of restaurateurs, upset about what they felt were American Express’ unfairly high rates, staged a revolt that came to be known as the Boston Fee Party. Outside the United States, card suppression – when merchants try to dissuade customers from using the American Express Card – began to rise.

American Express then shifted their focus from exclusivity to broadening acceptance.

Since 1996, American Express has been pursuing a strategy of opening its merchant network and card product portfolio to third party issuers around the world. By leveraging its global infrastructure and the powerful appeal of the brand, American Express has gained even broader reach for its network worldwide. American Express has now established 148 partnerships in 160 markets across the world.

Today, American Express has never been more competitive. It is a world leader in providing charge and credit cards to consumers, small businesses and corporations. It is the world's largest travel agency, offering travel and related consulting services to individuals and corporations around the world. the world's It is the largest card issuer by purchase volume.

As it has throughout its long and varied past, American Express continues to deliver valuable and innovative services to its customers. It remains committed to its longstanding core values. And, as it was in 1850, it is poised to seize new opportunities in a rapidly changing industry and world.

ABOUT AMERICAN EXPRESS IN THE PHILIPPINES
American Express opened its first office in Asia at 36 Escolta in Manila, Philippines in 1916 – first started its business by offering a variety of shipping services, custom brokerage and traveler’s checks.
    .
In 1991, The Platinum Card® was introduced to the Philippines where it continues to maintain its status as one of the most desired cards in the market.

    What is Diners Club International?

Established in 1950, Diners Club International (DCI) was the first independent charge and credit card company in the world, and it established the concept of a self-sufficient company producing credit cards for travel and entertainment. DCI or Diners is under the Discover Financial Services, Inc.

Diners Club's monopoly was short-lived, as American Express and Carte Blanche, BankAmericard (now Visa) and Interbank Master Charge (now MasterCard) began to compete with Diners Club in the credit & charge card market. American Express now dominates the "member card" arena, providing millions of customers with cards that require the monthly balance to be paid in full.

As the Company faced stiff competition, DCI began early on to allow franchises of the Diners Club name, at first in Europe and later throughout the world. The first plastic Diners Club card was introduced in 1961; by the mid-1960s, Diners Club had 1.3 million cardholders.

Diners Club International was acquired by Citigroup in 1981 and by Discover Financial Services in April 2008

    --
    DCI in the Philippines

In the 1970s, Security Bank issued its first credit card, introducing the Philippines to Diners Club. DCI is also the first credit card to be issued in the Filipino market. However, stiff competition occurred as local & international credit card providers established and other payment network/card brands entered in the country in the latter years.

Through the years, the growth of merchant acceptance and purchase volume for DCI remained slow-moving or no little progress, as compared to other card brands such as AMEX and JCB.

Not until 2016, the Philippines’ largest lender became the answer to the growth problems of Diners Club International, as Security Bank, through SB Cards, has sold its rights as the exclusive issuer and acquirer of Diners Club International (DCI) credit cards in the country to Banco de Oro Unibank Inc.

BDO opens up new opportunities in the Philippines for Diners Club and Discover cardholders through a large base of merchant acceptance locations and access to over 1,000 operating branches. As a franchise, BDO will enable Diners Club to extend its global merchant footprint and issuing while solidifying its position as a premier card option for consumers in the Philippines by providing them access to merchants all over the world wherever Diners Club is accepted.

Today, DINERS CLUB PH has jointly launched with our local issuing partners a total of two products, which are sought after by frequent travelers.
    -Diners Club International Standard
    -Diners Club International Premiere

What are the steps in New Card Application?

    APPLICATION: GETTING A NEW CARD

APPLICATION PROCESS. Get and fill up application form. Maybe done via any branch of BDO or The SM Store, website/online, or marketing agents (usually located in major malls).

VERIFCATION PHASE. The information contained on the application is being verified. The Card Issuer will call you. During verification call, the information you provided in the application should match the answers to what Bank Officer will ask you.

The Card Issuer need at least one contact number to verify you are reachable. Mobile number is as important as home and office landline phone number. Application with postpaid mobile numbers is priority for processing.

CREDIT INVESTIGATION PHASE. Applications, documents, debt-to-income ratio, credit history and credit scores are being reviewed. Employments and income are being verified. Your CASA in BDO is being checked also.

For low risk job title, app is automatically consider.
For high risk job title, the credit officer will verify everything.

Applicants with work less than 6-12 months tenure or those with bad or no credit history will be auto-declined. (In this case, branch endorsement option is your last resort).

For office phone number requirement, this is to verify your employment if you are in a high risk job. (And yes, engineers, architects, BPO employees esp. call center representative, government employees, at mga trabahador na madalas na nasa field work KAHIT sobrang taas pa ang sahod ay nasa high risk category. Credit Officer will call your HR department, as per protocol.

PHONE RING? Some credit officers are also follow 3 (three)-ring-policy especially if there's high volume of applications (this is mostly for online applications because field agents didn't see you personally). They'll ring you and drop the call if you didn't answer for 3 rings. And, yes they also usually ring you only once per day. Once you didn't answer, you'll be placed on the end of the list and subject to be called again if you are considered a potential customer, but will get declined if not.

All of the checks and verification will be sent to the credit manager.

CREDIT EVALUATION PHASE. Once the application and credit scores are reviewed, the credit evaluator assesses your information to see which credit card you qualify for based on the creditor's criteria.

DECISION/VERDICT PHASE. The phase whether your application is approved or declined. Credit officers eliminates
the applications with bad review while submit the applications of potential clients as well as their information to the approving credit manager. The Approving Officer will decide for the final verdict of the potential clients ‘applications.

    -Recent Inquiries (approvals and denials)

MAY MALALAKAS AT MAY MAHIHINANG SANGAY.

How can I find out the status of my application?
By using BDO Website Online Service. You can know your application status via Website. However, most apps via Branch Endorsement are not visible in this query.

OPINION: Is it easy to get approval on each AMEX/DCI card applications?

skipperjack: Hi guys. Mas mabilis ba ma-approve sa BDO AMEX as compared sa BDO MC AND VISA? Tulad ng "Must be a regular employee for 1 year."

Strong7Power: I guess so.

Ah ganun ba. Or BDO lang talaga?

Strong7Power: According to a CS Suppervisor, "AMEX" issued by BDO has a separate/different department/division from "BDO" branded cards (MC/VISA/JCB/CUP).

Strong7Power: AXP is harder when it comes to Card Applications Approval than mainstream MC and Visa.

Despite BDO-issued, our AMEXCO cards are still treated as AMEX issued cards (in technical sense).

OPINION: Why AMEX tag as privilege or prestige bank card?

informant: Advantages of AX cards are mostly the same as other cards if they are the basic (AX blue/green/gold). The advantages and perks go up in the higher tiers. Especially if you travel abroad there are lots of promos especially in the U.S. like free upgrades at hotels. Freebies at restaurants and easier booking busy restaurants on short notice just to name a few. And free purchase protection as others have mentioned along with free 20M+ travel insurance when booking tickets. No need to purchase travel insurance anymore through the airline which you usually pay $10-25 for when adding it. (Other elite cards may also have purchase protection and travel insurance of similar value)

There are still exclusive promos for all levels of AX though even in the Philippines just as there are other brands of banks Visa/MC. Adding an amex card to your arsenal of cards means improving the promos available to you. Having a basic level AX is also a passport to getting the much harder to obtain higher level tiers of AX after you have been with them at least a year.

MRBANKS21: In the Philippines AmEX is a privilege/prestige card meaning it's harder to obtain than other cards although it's not as hard to obtain as a few years ago as more people are getting approved. Having one means most likely you are in good standing credit wise and will be useful as a reference card and other means.

Disadvantages. Its not available everywhere credit cards are accepted. They must have a BDO terminal. Some gas stations 2 years ago could not take my AX because they had a BPI/MCC/Citi terminals. Things have improved greatly since then but it's still not as widely accepted in the provinces compared to NCR. Expect 70% give or take of AX accepted compared to Visa/MC 99%+ in Metropolitan Manila and much lower in the provinces especially the smaller ones. Most malls have a BDO terminals along with other banks terminals but not with all restaurants/other establishments.

That's why i have my Visa/MC card where AX is not accepted. If you want to use AX as your sole card then do not get it If you want to use it everywhere. If you already have Visa/MC then its nice to add to your cards.

And tama sila na mas mahirap mag-apply and get approve for AX compare sa ibang credit card brands especially the Green and Gold CHARGE cards, so in reality AmEx is not for everyone.

But if elite card levels, AmEx Platinum Credit Card/The Platinum Card mas maganda ito o may laban ito sa other-bank-issued elite cards.

AmEx The Platinum Card - it's like the highest level of platinum issued cards in the PH, and it is recognized as PLATINUM, not only in the PH but worldwide, more prestige than World MasterCard and Visa Infinite/Signature. I'm not sure if it's the same level as World Elite MasterCard tho.

    What is Branch Endorsement? How?

PROGRAMANG PAG-EENDORSO MULA SA SANGAY AT PRIBADONG PAGBABANGKO
BRANCH & PRIVATE BANKING ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM

Ito man ay Personal Loan, Credit Card o Increase in Credit Limit (ICL).

Minimum Applicant Criteria for Personal Loan & Credit Card:
    a. 21-70 years old
    b. Must be a Filipino citizen. If Foreign, provide documentation requirements such as valid Passport with resident VISA or work permit and valid VISA
    c. Must be a regular employee or must have an existing business for two years.
    d. Minimum gross income of at least P120,000.
    e. Must have Landline contact number.
    f. Residence or Office address miust be within BDO serviceable area.
    g. Must be in good credit standing.

    REQUIRED SIGNATORIES
-Branch: Branch Head and Area Head OR Branch Head with rank of AVP and up

-Private Bank, Trust Group, and other departments and subsidiaries of BDO:  Unit Head and Department Head OR Unit Head with rank of AVP and up

-For BDO Platinum MasterCard, (A) the CASA is at least 6 months or for Loan Clients, must be one year; (B) Individual accounts ONLY – Single ownership, No Corporate Accounts; (C) [1] For Branch Banking Clients, must have a TRB of CASA, TD, & Trust of at least 1Million in last 6 months; [2] For Private Banking Clients, at least 5M combined products of Deposits, Cash & Money Market Products, Fixed Income Products, Equity & Securities Products, Derivatives, Off - Shore Funds, and Trust Products; (D) Accounts/Investments MUST not under HOLD-OUT.

    Minimum Criteria for ICL:
-Requirements may vary per branch.

    Card Delivery:
All approved cards under endorsement program shall be delivered to the applicant’s billing address.

Endorsement’s evaluation will based on Customer Risk Rating, Placement Code, and Product Mix Ratio.

What do I need to know more about BDO Cards?

    SUPPLEMENTARY CARDS
As a PRINCIPAL Cardholder in good standing, you may apply for up to six (6) SUPPLEMENTARY Cards* for immediate family members (parents, siblings, spouse, and children, 13 years old and above), with the sub-limit feature, you can manage your SUPPLEMENTARY Cards expenses by simply assigning a specific credit limit amount for each of the SUPPLEMENTARY Cardholders. As a PRINCIPAL Cardholder, you shall be liable for all purchases and cash advances made, including all interests and charges incurred through the use of the SUPPLEMENTARY Cards.

    * For World Elite Mastercard, you may apply for up to four (4) Supplementary Cards.

    CARD VALIDITY AND RENEWAL
Unless terminated or canceled prior to expiry date, your Card is valid from the issue date up to the last calendar day of the month indicated on the face of your Card. Renewal of the Card will be at the sole discretion of BDO. If the Card is not renewed, BDO may demand full payment of any outstanding credit availment.

    STATEMENT DATE
This is the regular statement cut-off date of all your BDO Credit Card transactions. If your statement date falls on a Friday, Saturday or a National holiday, your statement date will be the preceding day or the following day after your official statement date.

STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT FOR DUAL CURRENCY CARDS
You will get two separate statement of acounts. All your local transactions will be billed in Philippine Pesos, while your international transactions will be billed in US Dollars*. For your Dollar billing, you have the option to pay the exact amount in US Dollars or pay in Pesos using the exchange rate at the time of payment.

    * Choose US Dollars or the local currency when transacting overseas or on-line in order to be billed in US Dollars.

    PAYMENT DUE DATE
Payment should be made on or before the Payment Due Date indicated in your SOA to keep your account active and to avoid late payment charges. If your Payment Due Date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a National Holiday, payment due date is automatically moved to the next business day.

    MINIMUM PAYMENT
This is the minimum amount that must be paid on or before Payment Due Date. This is the sum of the following: (a) 3% of your Outstanding Balance less Installment Amortizations and new transactions posted within the current statement period, or P200, whichever is higher; (b) 3% of Installment Amortization; (c) Overdue Amount; (d) Over-Limit Amount. In case of default, BDO may demand payment of the obligation in full.

    FINANCE CHARGE
If you choose to pay your Outstanding Balance in full on or before the Payment Due Date, no finance charge will be imposed. However, if you choose to pay only the Minimum Payment Due or any amount less than the Outstanding Balance on or before the Payment Due Date, you will be treated as a borrower or a “revolver”. Hence, a finance charge* will be imposed on the outstanding balance stated in your previous SOA and on all new transactions posted within the statement period computed from the transaction date until the current statement date. Outstanding balance is the statement balance as of cut-off date inclusive of previous unpaid balance, new retail purchases, cash advances, charges and fees.

*Monthly Interest Rates are reflected in the Fees and Charges flyer inserted in your SOA and can be viewed in the BDO  Credit Cards webpage.

    CREDIT LIMIT
Your Credit Limit is the maximum outstanding balance that you and your SUPPLEMENTARY Cardholders, if any, can maintain at any given time. Each Principal Card has its own assigned Credit Limit. Please keep your outstanding balance within your assigned Credit Limit. BDO reserves the right to approve or disapprove any purchase or advance that exceeds your Credit Limit. Any amount in excess of the assigned Credit Limit becomes due for payment immediately.

    FEES/OTHER DEBITS
BDO-initiated Fees may be charged to your account from time to time. This portion may include: Annual Membership Fee, Cash Advance Fee, Lost Card Replacement Fee, Returned Check Fee, a fee for closed accounts and/or accounts with insufficient funds under an Auto-Debit Arrangement (ADA) facility, if applicable, and other applicable fees. Such fees may be revised from time to time.

    ADDRESS/DATA CHANGE
Any change in your address (Post Office Box address not accepted), telephone/mobile number and other data must be immediately relayed to BDO by calling the BDO Customer Contact Center at 631-8000. In the event that the Cardholder’s chosen mailing address is not accessible through mail or courier delivery, BDO shall have the option to use the other addresses provided by the Cardholder, if any. Until BDO is notified of such change, it will continue to use the current Cardholder’s address/contact number/data on file.

    LOST OR STOLEN CARD
When your Card gets lost or stolen, please report it immediately by calling the BDO Customer Contact Center at 631-8000. The Lost Card Protection (LCP) feature frees you from any liability when your card gets used fraudulently. However, coverage under the LCP begins from the time the loss or theft is reported to the BDO Customer Contact Center. In such an event, your card will be permanently blocked and a card replacement fee will be charged to your account, if applicable.

ERRORS OR QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR BILL
Please examine your SOA for any errors. If no error is reported to the BDO Customer Contact Center within 30 days from Statement Date, the SOA will be considered true and accurate and binding upon you.

    FOREIGN EXCHANGE CONVERSION RATE
Assessment fee of 1% plus service fee of 1.5% of the converted amount will be billed to your account based on the prevailing foreign exchange rate of Mastercard/Visa/JCB/UnionPay/Diners Club International and BDO respectively at the time of the posting. The service fee may be imposed at the sole discretion of BDO and may be subject to change.

For foreign charges converted using the prevailing foreign exchange rate of American Express at the time of posting, a conversion factor of 2.5% will be applied to the converted amount, of which 1% is retained by American Express. Any charges converted by third parties prior to being submitted to us have been at rates selected by them.

    USE OF THE CARD
Use of the Card is subject to the Terms and Conditions Governing the Issuance and Use of BDO Credit Cards as inserted in your Welcome Pack, and as may be amended by BDO from time to time. In case of conflict between the provisions of these reminders and said Terms and Conditions, the latter shall prevail.

It is understood that by signing at the back of the Card and/or your use of the Card, even if you have not signed any Application Form, you shall be bound by and deemed to have agreed to the Terms and Conditions Governing the Issuance and Use of BDO Credit Cards and the provisions of this reminder and you shall be liable for any and all applicable charges and fees arising from the use of the Card.
