Claire Danes' harsh words on the Philippines

JOIN THE BOYCOTT! DO 'NOT' WATCH THE NEW MOVIE "BROKEDOWN PALACE'S"
STARRING THE "PERSONA NON GRATA" herself, CLAIRE DANES

Celebrities are saying they will 'not' go see the Claire Danes' new
movie, Brokedown Palace's. Bruce Willis, Oprah, Denzel Washington,
Rosie O'Donnel are just the few celebrities who publicly declared that
they'll join the boycott.
"I can only hope she chokes on it." said Oprah, talking about Ms.
Claire Danes' acerbic tongue --People's Magazine

"Claire Danes might want to take a few public speaking classes next
semester at Yale." said Hollywood producer Glenn Klein. The 20-year-old
actress-turned-freshman is being sharply criticized for comments she
made about Manila, Philippines where she filmed her current movie
Brokedown Palace--CNN Showbiz

The city council of Manila voted 3 weeks ago to ban all movies featuring
Claire Danes because the actress dissed the Philippine city in the
current issue of Premiere Magazine. "She is declared persona non
grata," councilor Kim Atienza tells the Associated Press. At Magazine
issue is Danes' public recollection of the months she spent in Manila
earlier this year while shooting scenes for Brokedown Palace in a
dilapidated mental hospital. The city "just f--king smelled of
cockroaches," she told Premiere Magazine. "There's no sewage system in
Manila, and people have nothing there. People with, like, no arms, no
legs, no eyes, no teeth.... Rats were everywhere."

This wasn't the first time Danes had spoken out against Manila; in the
April issue of Vogue Magazine she described it as "a ghastly and weird
city." But this time, Atienza and his colleagues had had
enough.--Newsweek Magazine

Philippine President Joseph Estrada, a former movie star, said he
believes Hollywood actress Claire Danes should be banned from entering
the Philippines for having disparaged the country's capital. "She should
not be allowed to come here. She should not even be allowed to set foot
here," Estrada said Thursday in reaction to a decision by Manila's city
council Tuesday to declare Miss Danes "persona non-grata" and ban all
her movies from being shown in the city.] --Manila Bulletin

"She deserved to be banned" said Tom Hanks "Those are irresponsible,
bigoted and sweeping statements Claire Danes made." on an interview in
Entertainment Tonight
Claire Danes' reported comments have also been widely debated in
newspaper columns and editorial pages, with some newspapers castigating
the actress including New York Times and the Washington Post. on CNN
Showbiz show by reporter Shiela Schultz

"Her remarks were uncalled for." Lisa Kudrow said MTV 1515 News

Claire Danes was known as an actress with a bad attitude. "She(Claire
Danes) seems to be a very rude actress especially towards the movie set
crew staff and her make-up artist." explained "Romeo & Juliet" Assistant
Director Richard Meyers

In a statement released last week, the actress attempted to clarify her
position. "Because of the subject matter of our film Brokedown Palace,
the cast was exposed to the darker and more impoverished places of
Manila. My comments in Premiere Magazine only reflect those locations,
not my attitude towards the Filipino people. They were nothing but warm,
friendly, and supportive." But nobody seems to be accepting Claire
Danes' apology. Atienza dismissed the statement as an "excuse made by
Danes' Hollywood agents and not a genuine apology."

I agree wholeheartedly. I have been seeing previews of this movie and while the reviews said she turned in a good performance there is no way I will watch it.
  • lisa kudrow's right, it was uncalled for ... and maybe claire danes did see only the seedier side of manila ... come to think of it, a huge part [maybe as much as 75%] of manila's totally seedy ... i'm manila-born & so spent a good deal of my childhood there ... the place taught me a lot, like how to spot snatchers when shopping wholesale in divisoria & how to avoid the black mud that covers the streets during the rainy season :( ... i can say all these bcoz i love manila & would like to see it restored to its old beauty ... claire danes had, has & will never have such right ... ;)
  • Obviously, Claire Danes didn't think out
what she said..but I'm afraid to say that
if you would have asked any American
teenager the same question, the response
would be the same. You see, most Americans
are dolts when it comes to world history,
especially the kids..and it just gets worse
as the generations go by..they barely, and
    I'm using 'barely' conservatively,..know
    recent American history...let alone the
    rest of the worlds...
She should have read up more..especially
the American / Spanish war...If she would
have seen how Americans butchered our people..She would've known better.
    Peace

  • while we're at it (claire danes-basjing, i mean), it might interest you to know that one of her films is now showing in metro manila theaters. it's called 'mod squad'.

so, should we boycott this as well?

  • anfernee: i'm not boycotting claire danes' movies ... if they're good, why not watch them, 'di ba? she's good at choosing projects ... but i'm not watching anything just bcoz claire danes is there either ... i'd rather boycott the pretentious carlitos siguion-reyna films, especially after his mom initiated the movie ad pullout from the inquirer ...
  • She should not have made such assupmtions of what she saw....in fact she had been to the lowly parts of the city only. Obviously, she has star complex...she thinks she's all that. Well, too bad, because it ain't gonna work for the Filipinos...she lost viewers.
She has no breeding at all. Someone should teach her to be modest enough.

  • As far as Danes is concerned, her opinions about Manila are her opinions. I can respect her for that. But to publicly say it in a blatant, uncalled for manner is just over the line! SOME THINGS SHOULD BE LEFT UNSAID. Her doing it reflects the kind of person she is. And as an actress, like i said, some things should be left unsaid...

As for Manila, totoo naman yung sinabi ni Danes. Ban her movies for all I care!!! The challenge here is to fix the place up! Same should be done to Pasay.

    Her movies should be banned!
  • To be fair to the City of Manila, the ghastly "city" Claire Danes was referring to was METRO Manila. Siyempre, foreigners don't know Manila from Makati from Quezon City from Caloocan. To them, they're all the same and call it "Manila." True, most of "Brokedown Palace" was shot in Manila (the city) but if my facts are correct (someone please confirm :D ), the hotel she stayed in was Edsa Shangrila Plaza- the eksena of her cockroach-infested nightmares. Then, she shot some scenes at a mental hospital (i'm not sure if this is the one in Mandaluyong or somewhere else) - fodder for her "no arms, no legs, no eyes" claims. All i know is that they shot all over Metro Manila, hindi lang Manila.

Then there's this little anecdote about Ms. Danes wanting to do some shopping. The production team wanted to take her to Shangri-la Mall next door, but fearing she'd be mobbed by crowds, they took her to Manuela instead!

no wonder traumatized ang bata.... lol.gif

(no offense sa mga nag-shoshopping sa Manuela) :D

anyways, i really don't care about Claire Danes' comments, she's got a right to speak for herself. i just felt i needed to come to the defense of Manila, kasi nag-mukhang Manila lang ang "ghastly" while in fact - let's face it - the whole metropolis needs cleaning up (in more ways than one).
  • I read about those comments in an email, too. Anyhow, did Claire Danes really say those things? Maybe, maybe not. It could be another case of that whole "Mariah calling Regine a brown monkey" issue which turned out not to be true, after all.

One thing I think is suspicious is the supposed comments of Bruce Willis, Oprah, Denzel Washington, Rosie O'Donell and Lisa Kudrow. I really don't think those stars said those slanderous comments against Danes. If they knew better, they wouldn't get themselves involved in such a snafu.
  • Isn't this such OLD NEWS already? This thread was started over a year ago pa.

That's not possible .... she doesn't have any movies :)

Its, Golden Globe Winner (no Oscar nomination), Claire Danes she hasn't been relevant since forever. Ok she has Homeland but it shows that she had no future in movies so she retreated to TV.

She started on TV so it's not too farfetched of an idea of going back to her roots.

BWAHAHAHA. I, too, stumbled upon this thread just now out of curiosity. So I skimmed through the "article". I understand how it seemed credible at the time, but now I'm sure it's just all made up. Oprah would never say "I hope she chokes on it" - bwahahhaha.

I love Claire Danes on Homeland by the way.
