    PROFILE

Banco De Oro Universal Bank, Inc., through its consumer credit division Consumer Lending Group, is the largest Card Issuer and Merchant Acquirer in the Philippines issuing all existing card brands - MC, Visa, AXP, JCB, CUP, and DCI.

Equitable Banking Corporation (EBC) received its foreign currency license from the BSP in 1977 and issued its first credit cards under the Visa brand in 1980.

In 1989, Equitable Bank turned its credit card department into a wholly owned subsidiary, Equitable Card Network (ECN, stylized as Equitable CardNetwork). It was the Philippines' leading credit card company and also had the distinction of being the only card issuer which carried the four major global credit card brands at that time - VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Japan Credit Bureau.

Its former bank competitor, PCIBank organized Philippine Commercial Credit Card, Inc. (PCCCI) in 1981 and was later renamed as Bankard, Inc. in 1992. PCCCI's affiliation with PCIBank gave it the distinction of being the first credit card in the Philippines issued by a commercial bank.

In ATM/POS switch operator, EBC/ECN, with three other banks, formed MegaLink in 1989, then the Philippines' largest ATM network. Meanwhile, PCIBank formed BancNet along with seven other banks in 1990.

In 1995, when Equitable Bank took over Philippine Commercial Industrial/International Bank, the new Equitable PCI Bank (EPCI Bank) chose to keep Equitable Bank's credit card arm, Equitable CardNetwork, rather than to incorporate Bankard, Inc. into ECN's operations. Bankard was then sold in May 2000 to Yuchengco Group of Companies - best known as the owner of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation or RCBC.

Also note in March 1995, Bankard, Inc. became the first credit card company to offer both dollar (PCIBank MasterCard) and peso (Bankard MasterCard) payment billing options

In 2002, Banco de Oro Universal Bank first decided to launch a credit card and MasterCard was the first card brand to carry.

In 2004, AMEX tied-up with ECN to introduce The EPCI American Express Gold Credit Card.

From 2005 to 2007, BDO strategized in buying Equitable PCI Bank, Inc. including its subsidiary Equitable CardNetwork. Then, in 2006, the entity was known for a while as Banco de Oro-EPCI, Inc, and the following year, it was changed to its current name, Banco de Oro Unibank, Inc. or BDO Unibank, Inc. After the completion of the purchase to BDO, the Equitable CardNetwork and Equitable Bank founder established a thrift bank known as Equicom Savings Bank in 2008.

When BDO took over EPCI, it assumed the operation and issuance of The EPCI American Express Credit Card and The EPCI American Express Gold Credit Card. By December 2007, BDO also became the Issuer of all American Express Cards (Credit, Charge, Corporate) in the Philippines issued out by American Express International, Inc. (AEII) and American Express Savings Bank (A Savings Bank), Inc. (AESBI). Since then, BDO has continued to enhance these products and develop new ones to satisfy customer requirements.

In 2010, then-Philippines largest lender by assets, Banco de Oro, has partnered with the biggest credit card company in China, China UnionPay or CUP.

In 2012, 2013, and 2015, the Unibank launched BDO Dual Gold Cards (American Express + MasterCard)Blue from American Express and The American Express Cashback Credit Card respectively.

In 2014, BDO introduced BDO World Elite Card, a by-invitation card.

In 2016, BDO added Diners Club to card portfolio after it has accepted the offer of the SB Cards Corporation (SB Cards), which is a subsidiary of Security Bank Corp., to sell its rights as the exclusive issuer and acquirer of Diners Club International (DCI) cards in the country, as well as its cardholder base.

In 2017, BDO started issuing BDO JCB Platinum.

Today, BANCO DE ORO UNIBANK, INC. is The Philippine Islands' largest card issuer and merchant acquirer (in terms of card brands and card circulation, and cardholders base) in the industry with unparalleled experience and service. It is also the ONLY bank in the Philippines that lets you accept ALL ATM DEBIT/PREPAID CARDS of BANCNET (even EXPRESSNET, VISA ELECTRON, VISA PLUS, MASTERCARD CIRRUS, MASTERCARD MAESTRO, DISCOVER PULSE) and all major credit card brands - MASTERCARD, VISA, AMERICAN EXPRESS, JAPAN CREDIT BUREAU, CHINA UNION PAY, DINERS CLUB INTERNATIONAL and DISCOVER.

***Equitable Bank was the first to issue Visa, and Visa Electron; and became the largest Visa credit and debit card issuer in the country. Bankard, Inc. was the first to issue MasterCard, JCB, and CUP. AMEX Philippines was the first to issue AMEX. Security Bank and Trust Company was the first to issue Diners Club International.

***In ATM Alliance, ExpressNet was once the BDO ATM Network. BancNet was once the PCI Bank Network. And MegaLink was once the Equitable Bank ATM Network. In 2015, BancNet and MegaLink merged and the BancNet was the surviving brand

MAY MALALAKAS AT MAY MAHIHINANG SANGAY.

What are the steps in New Card Application?

    APPLICATION: GETTING A NEW CARD

APPLICATION PROCESS. Get and fill up application form. Maybe done via any branch of BDO or The SM Store, website/online, or marketing agents (usually located in major malls).

VERIFCATION PHASE. The information contained on the application is being verified. The Card Issuer will call you. During verification call, the information you provided in the application should match the answers to what Bank Officer will ask you.

The Card Issuer need at least one contact number to verify you are reachable. Mobile number is as important as home and office landline phone number. Application with postpaid mobile numbers is priority for processing.

CREDIT INVESTIGATION PHASE. Applications, documents, debt-to-income ratio, credit history and credit scores are being reviewed. Employments and income are being verified. Your CASA in BDO is being checked also.

For low risk job title, app is automatically consider.
For high risk job title, the credit officer will verify everything.

Applicants with work less than 6-12 months tenure or those with bad or no credit history will be auto-declined. (In this case, branch endorsement option is your last resort).

For office phone number requirement, this is to verify your employment if you are in a high risk job. (And yes, engineers, architects, BPO employees esp. call center representative, government employees, at mga trabahador na madalas na nasa field work KAHIT sobrang taas pa ang sahod ay nasa high risk category. Credit Officer will call your HR department, as per protocol.

PHONE RING? Some credit officers are also follow 3 (three)-ring-policy especially if there's high volume of applications (this is mostly for online applications because field agents didn't see you personally). They'll ring you and drop the call if you didn't answer for 3 rings. And, yes they also usually ring you only once per day. Once you didn't answer, you'll be placed on the end of the list and subject to be called again if you are considered a potential customer, but will get declined if not.

All of the checks and verification will be sent to the credit manager.

CREDIT EVALUATION PHASE. Once the application and credit scores are reviewed, the credit evaluator assesses your information to see which credit card you qualify for based on the creditor's criteria.

DECISION/VERDICT PHASE. The phase whether your application is approved or declined. Credit officers eliminates
the applications with bad review while submit the applications of potential clients as well as their information to the approving credit manager. The Approving Officer will decide for the final verdict of the potential clients ‘applications.

    Common reasons for application denial
-Bad rating/review on credit score (not good in repayment history, credit utilization ratio, credit mix, the length of credit history and the number of recent credit inquiries, etc.)
-Use too much of your available credit
    -Recent Inquiries (approvals and denials)
    - Increase debt-to-income ratio
    - Doing follow-ups (it can suggest that you badly need credit or you were declined by several banks before).
    - Declined phone call (miscall) during verification, investigation & evaluation stage.

    HOW LOAN PRODUCTS BE APPROVED
    Excerpts from maikeeeru

maikeeeru says: One of my colleagues here worked as a credit officer. According to her, the final approval comes from credit managers - credit officers kind of "sort out" the applications and submit the potential clients, as well as their information to the approving credit manager.

She noted that car and home loans are easier to get approved than cards because they can get something in return once the applicant gets defaulted.

For cards, they usually check the employment tenure, if you are on a low risk job title they automatically consider, but if you are in a high risk, then they verify everything.

They also assess your bank accounts with them, and if it is a tough call, check other history with other banks they have access to. They usually auto-decline applicants that work less than 6-12 months, or those with bad credit history.

All of the checks and verification will be sent to the credit manager.

Note: these may not apply to all banks - may mga officer na tamad, auto-decline sa kanila pa lang, may officer na lenient, and may mga officer na sobrang mabusisi sa trabaho.

maikeeeru says: Thanks mga master! Idadagdag ko lang dahil nakalimutan ko, according to my colleague: Credit officers also abide to different contacting policies. They need at least one contact number to verify you are reachable. Mobile number is as important as landline and work office.

They prioritize postpaid mobile numbers because, yes, they can actually check it on their system (She didn't mention what system but they actually have a database) but prepaid will also do.

Next is home landline. They can also check this. They also verify using landline. (BDO officers usually calls on landline outside office hours based on my experience).

Lastly, office phone number. For some banks this is very important - they require this to verify your employment if you are in a high risk job. (And yes, BPO employees are in a high risk category, specially if you are a call center agent). They will call your HR department usually.

Some of them also follow 3 ring policy especially if there's high volume of applications (this is mostly for online applications because field agents didn't see you personally). They'll ring you and drop the call if you didn't answer for 3 rings.

And, yes they also usually ring you only once per day. Once you didn't answer, you'll be placed on the end of the list and subject to be called again if you are considered a potential customer, but will get declined if not.

So there! Siguro based din sa mga info na nalaman ko, guidelines for credit card approval, to summarize:

*Employment / income matters. And it really matters down to tenure and profile.

*Bank accounts and relationship. Those with good relationship with their banks have higher chances of approval. (True, dspecially sa BDO - me and my colleague apply to BDO personal loan, SIC. Mas mataas ang gross niya sa akin and 5+ years na siya nagwo-work; ako wala pang 2 years. My advantage is that I have 100,000 deposit sa BDO that time; but siya, wala. In the end I got approved.)

    *Credit history.

    *Communication means.

How can I find out the status of my application?
By using BDO Website Online Service. You can know your application status via Website. However, most apps via Branch Endorsement are not visible in this query.

OPINION: Is it easy to get approval on each AMEX/DCI card applications?

skipperjack: Hi guys. Mas mabilis ba ma-approve sa BDO AMEX as compared sa BDO MC AND VISA? Tulad ng "Must be a regular employee for 1 year."

Strong7Power: I guess so.

Ah ganun ba. Or BDO lang talaga?

Strong7Power: According to a CS Suppervisor, "AMEX" issued by BDO has a separate/different department/division from "BDO" branded cards (MC/VISA/JCB/CUP).

Strong7Power: AXP is harder when it comes to Card Applications Approval than mainstream MC and Visa.

Despite BDO-issued, our AMEXCO cards are still treated as AMEX issued cards (in technical sense).

    What is Branch Endorsement? How?

PROGRAMANG PAG-EENDORSO MULA SA SANGAY AT PRIBADONG PAGBABANGKO
BRANCH & PRIVATE BANKING ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM

Ito man ay Personal Loan, Credit Card o Increase in Credit Limit (ICL).

Minimum Applicant Criteria for Personal Loan & Credit Card:

    b. Must be a Filipino citizen. If Foreign, provide documentation requirements such as valid Passport with resident VISA or work permit and valid VISA

    d. Minimum gross income of at least P120,000.
    e. Must have Landline contact number.

    g. Must be in good credit standing.

    REQUIRED SIGNATORIES
-Branch: Branch Head and Area Head OR Branch Head with rank of AVP and up

-Private Bank, Trust Group, and other departments and subsidiaries of BDO:  Unit Head and Department Head OR Unit Head with rank of AVP and up

-For BDO Platinum MasterCard, (A) the CASA is at least 6 months or for Loan Clients, must be one year; (B) Individual accounts ONLY – Single ownership, No Corporate Accounts; (C) [1] For Branch Banking Clients, must have a TRB of CASA, TD, & Trust of at least 1Million in last 6 months; [2] For Private Banking Clients, at least 5M combined products of Deposits, Cash & Money Market Products, Fixed Income Products, Equity & Securities Products, Derivatives, Off - Shore Funds, and Trust Products; (D) Accounts/Investments MUST not under HOLD-OUT.

    Minimum Criteria for ICL:
-Requirements may vary per branch.

    Card Delivery:
All approved cards under endorsement program shall be delivered to the applicant’s billing address.

Endorsement’s evaluation will based on Customer Risk Rating, Placement Code, and Product Mix Ratio.

What's the Pinoy version of AMEX Companion Cards?

This is BDO Dual Gold American Express and BDO Dual Gold MasterCard. Each has separate billing statement system however the two share the same credit limit. It has free membership in S&R Membership Shopping. It also has the lowest spend-to-AMEX MR point ratio - PHP25 : 1 MR point. The credit card points can be combined in time of AMEX Incentivo redemption. The card product offer both world of American EXpress and MasterCard.

Best Credit Card Reward Point System, Share the same credit limit, Different Billing Statement System, One Annual Fee, Two Cards in One Credit Card Account.

It is one of the best card products in the country.

May nakalagay na BDO DUAL GOLDS sa "About Us" ng AXP PH website.

However, as of the moment, the Pinoy local partner issuer do not accept new card applications and stopped issuing this companion card product but it is still in existence and included in current AXP PH and BDO promos.

Comparison: Old and New AXP Platinum Credit Card

informant: The new AXP credit cards do not have the shiny reflective hologram like the old ones (I didn't care much for it) and it now has ExpressPay Contactless feature (which I don't care for either).

    Comparison of old and new.
Shiny reflective hologram in the old AXP Credit.
