“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.” 

Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely conservative predecessor Benedict XVI. “Francis is a still a conservative,” said Mr Mickens. “But what this is all about is him seeking to have a more meaningful dialogue with the world.” 

In a welcoming response to the letter, Mr Scalfari said the Pope’s comments were “further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all”.

In July, Francis signalled a more progressive attitude on sexuality, asking: “If someone is gay and is looking for the Lord, who am I to judge him?”

This statement appears to apply to believers—the ones you would expect to ask God for mercy with contrition, etc.

Pope Francis then pivots to discuss “the issue for those who do not believe in God.”

He says that for them “the issue” is following their conscience, which will result in good behavior.

This is what the press, etc., have been interpreting as him saying that they can be saved.

But he doesn’t actually say that.

Believers also need to follow their conscience, and doing so will result in them having right behavior. But if they don’t follow their consciences then they sin and need to ask for mercy with contrition and a sincere heart.

What are atheists supposed to do if they don’t follow their consciences?

Pope Francis does not address this question.

does god's love and mercy work differently from ours? isnt he more loving and merciful than us? if so then we can reasonably predict that god will love and be merciful to good people who sincerely believes he does not exist!

actually after asking the father to forgive the sinners he told the thief beside him that he will be saved and then he died. i assume the crowd lingered for a few more minutes and then went back to their normal lives, none the wiser. the moral of the story is that god is merciful enough forgive anyone who is sincerely mistaken in their ways. so even atheists and non-catholics who are good and sincere can be saved.

But again, nobody really knows since no one could fathom how big God's love and mercy for His creations.

The thief was forgiven of his sins and was told that he will be saved at that very moment because the thief PROFESSED BELIEF, FAITH AND ACCEPTANCE TO Jesus Christ! Eh bakit itong thief lang na ito ang na-save at hindi pati yung isa?
