Sine-Suri, Isang Rebyu: "Scream 3"

scream_l.jpg

  • Zen: Yup. I think Scream 3 led the charts for around 2-3 weeks.
  • SCREAMING ITS HEART OUT

    Scream 3 (Dimensions, R)
    Directed by Wes Craven
Written by Ehren Krueger based on the characters of Kevin Williamson
Starring Neve Campbell, Courtney Coz Arquette, David Arquette, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Parker Posey

As a rule, sequels are considered inferior compared to the original. The higher the number attached to the title, the lower the cirtical value. There are exceptions, of course. Scream 3 is not of them. Although, this last installment of the arguably the most succesful slasher movie in history, remains technically superior over its kind, it suffers from the hefty shadow of its precendents. Thus, the most accorded adjective to this movie is tattered and tired, which is in relation to the other two Screams.

Scream 3 sees the return of Kelly Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox Arquette) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette), the original Woodsborough people, who are again pitted against their relentless masked nemesis in the Hollywood set, where a film adaptation of the Woodsborough murders is in production. The film is crafty in using the "film set" to bring back the characters to their "original" setting, and within which, metaphors to horror movie rules are fleshed out well. One can find here the same postmodern technique, the crisp tongue-in-cheek treatment and overt suspense-inducing machinations that made the Scream franchise succesful critically and box-office-wise. Although here, they become too diluted, the scary tactics excruciatingly efforted.

  • Hindi naman namatay, eh. Very continuous nga. Hindi ko lang masyadong pinopost dito.
  • I feel that Scream 3 has drained out all that what was good from the original Scream. The story is a disappointment , and a shallow one at that.

But then again, if i stop being a fanatic moviegoer and start being a movie critic, then what the hell is entertainment for?
  • A movie critic is a fanatic moviegoer, only he has the intelligence to discern and to think critically, because he sees the film not only as an entertainment fare (the lowliest one can designate of what film is is being a entertainment fare) but also as Art and its many facets and powers: social mirror, catalyst, spirtiual force, etc. Intelligent viewing can be and often is more fun than viewing for entertainment because you discover many facets, many layers, histories, etc. that stimulates not only the senses (which entertainment only does) but also the mind/soul. Being knowledgeable multiplies the pleasure in viweing a film like one can get more laughs from a Clinton joke by knowing Monica Lewinsky. One cannot appreciate Scream without having watched many horros movies and know its fundamentals. It is a manifold experience, and one has to explore. One learns from a film, and with learning comes pleasure, a deep sense of entertainment.

  • Amen, asterisk. Very very very true.
