Robinsons Bank to go into credit card business

GOKONGWEI-LED Robinsons Bank Corp. (Robinsons Bank) will soon foray into the credit card business, its director said, with the bank already gearing up for the official rollout of cards to its customers before the year ends.

Robinsons Bank said it plans to launch its credit card business by yearend after it bagged the necessary approvals.

“We will launch our card business soon. That could be before the end of the year, maybe in the last quarter we will launch our credit card business,” Robinsons Bank Director Omar Byron T. Mier told reporters in a recent interview.

“We already got approvals externally for that, so we’re just preparing the launch,” he added.

According to the bank’s director, they have partnered with Mastercard for their credit cards.

Asked if the credit cards will be chip-based, Mr. Mier said, “Yes. It has to be.”

MasterCard welcomes Robinsons Bank to the credit card business

Mastercard, a global leader in payment solutions, recently welcomed their newest issuer Robinsons Bank at a culmination event held at Marco Polo Ortigas. The latest company to enter the cards business with MasterCard, Robinsons Bank is slated to launch their first credit card in October.

“Robinsons Bank is a formidable player in the market, not just in the credit card business but also in the banking industry,” says Poch Villa-Real, MasterCard Philippines country manager. “MasterCard is glad to be a part of their efforts to expand and we hope to be able to enable many others.”

With both companies being major players in the industry, the partnership between Mastercard and Robinsons Bank aims to provide new banking options and benefits that will give every Filipino a better banking experience.

“We’ve been in the industry for the past 20 years and will continue to build a sustainable bank for the Filipino customer,” said Elfren Sarte, president of Robinsons Bank. “We’re happy that an organization under JG Conglomerate is finally entering the card business with Mastercard. This is the first credit card of Robinsons Bank, and thanks to Mastercard, it’s definitely going to be something to look forward to when we launch it in October.”

May nainterview akong branch manager ng isang robinsons bank. There are already a number of Robinsons CC issued to certain bank employees including her. She did not show to me her robinsons CC kasi di naman daw niya nagagamit except for straight transactions. They will soon issue daw muna to their employees then gradual inclusion na daw to the public with preferrence to regular employees of their sister companies. Wala pang specifics even kung may world MC din ba sila or kung magissue sila ng visa or other payment processor. Right now corporate mastercard daw siya.

Sa PRESS RELEASE ng RB kasi, within yearend o last quarter of 2017 ang roll out ng CC nila. So mukhang 2018 pa talaga bukas sa publiko ang kanilang produktong credit card.

    Thanks.

NEWS 2017: US company to introduce 'credit scoring' in Philippines
    ABS-CBN News Dot Com, October 12 2017

MANILA - A system for assessing a person's creditworthiness will soon be introduced in the Philippines, U.S. credit scoring company FICO said on Thursday.

FICO said it has partnered with Consumer Creditscore Philippines (CCS) to compute credit scores for Filipinos.

In the U.S., a credit score guides banks, credit card companies and other financial institutions about a person's creditworthiness, with a higher score thought to be more likely to pay back a loan.

"Good credit increases a borrower's chances of getting a loan or the credit card faster; secured with better, lower interest rates and terms," FICO said.

FICO calculates the credit score using a proprietary formula based on a person's payment history, level of indebtedness, length of credit history, new credit, and types of credit used.

The company, however, admitted that it would need to modify the formula in the Philippines because only 14 percent of the population have bank accounts and usually pay on a cash basis.

FICO did not say when it will introduce the system and which companies will be using it.

Since Meron na palang Robinsons Credit Card. Edi mawawala na ang Metrobank Robinsons Credit Card? Mr Gokongwei should hire someone from Citibank Credit Cards to manage this card business if kung saan saang bangko lang for sure hinde magiging successfully Robinsons Credit Card. Tip ko lang Mr Gokongwei if you really have a vision for Robinsons Bank.

Why are you teaching Mr. Gokongwei how run his business? :D

He started a food, mall, airline, retail business from scratch, and has big stakes in PLDT Meralco and San Miguel.

Maybe you can learn a thing or two from Big John :D
