[center-hidden]Welcome to the official PinoyExchange Thread of the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas (UST) Volleyball Teams!

tenor.gif

The history of the Volleyball program of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) traces down to its roots as one of the four founding members of the UAAP. It has produced numerous championships in the Men's, Women's and Girls divisions, including several MVPs and awardees in both the UAAP and other club leagues. UST was seen at the forefront of the rise of the popularity of volleyball in the Philippines, winning championships after championships when the sport was started to be televised.

[CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]Sans for captains EJ Laure and Sisi Rondina, who are playing for their club leagues, plus the departure of Ria Meneses, Chlodia Cortez, Alex Cabanos, Patricia Rasmo and Pam Lastimosa, the new look UST Tigresses will join the 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix. Lead by new team captain Shannen Palec, the Tigresses will be coached by beach volley coach Paul Doloiras as head coach Kung Fu Reyes heads the Cocolife Asset Managers.

OCT14: UST Tiger Spikers win PVL Bronze, Rookie Umandal awarded as Best Opposite Spiker
The UST Tiger Spikers behind team captain Tim Tajanlangit and rookie sensation Joshua Umandal bagged the Bronze medal in the recently concluded PVL Men's Tournament. After falling to the eventual champions ADMU Blue Eagles in a nail-biting semifinals series, the Tigers swept the NU Bulldogs in the bronze medal series.
OCT15: UST Women's bag 5th overall Beach Volley Title, Men's settled for 1st Runner up anew
Cherry Rondina won her 3rd UAAP beach volleyball championship, and 3rd MVP award, this time with last year's Rookie of the Year Caitlyn Viray. The women's won their 5th title overall. The men's duo of KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto failed to defend their crown after a nail-biter 15-13, 3rd set, Game 3 against the NU Bulldogs. Guzman graduated with 1 gold and 4 silver in his career. This is the men's team's 6th silver medal in the tournament backing up their 3rd gold last year.
OCT28: UST scores twin kill in University Games 2017
The UST Tiger Spikers and the UST Golden Tigresses score back to back championships in the last University Games. It was the first Unigames title for the MVT after defeating NCAA champs CSB in the finals. While for the Golden Tigresses, they scored back to back titles, and their 5th in 9 years after beating UAAP champs DLSU Lady Spikers in 5 sets.
DEC02: UST Golden Tigresses finish PSL stint with no wins but with tons of experience.
Winning only one set in 8 games, the UST Golden Tigresses finished their PSL stint with no win, but gaining tons of experience. Import Yukie Inamasu provided the firepower for the embattled Tigresses, but it is not enough to follow up a set win against the Cocolife Asset Managers.
DEC03: UST Boys Volleyball Team wins historic first championship; UST Girls finish runner up anew in Season 80
The UST Boys Volleyball team secured their first ever UAAP championship on Sunday, by sweeping number one seeds FEU Baby Tamaraws. This is after the controversial final four decision against the NU Bullpups. Team captain Lorenz Senoron won as the Best Opposite Spiker, while teammates Jaron Requinton (Best Middle Blocker and Finals MVP), Rey De Vega (Best Server) and CJ Segui (Rookie of the Year) also copped trophies.

Meanwhile, the UST Girls Volleyball team failed to secure their first championship since Season 76, as they finished bridesmaids anew to the NU Lady Bullpups. Graduating team captain Eya Laure won the Best Opposite Spiker award while holdovers Imee Hernandez (Best Middle Blocker) and Bernadette Pepito (Best Libero) won as well.

Some UST volleyball alumni have become a regular fixture in game commentating, being potent parts of the sport, even outside the court. Tex Suter and Doc Ian Laurel are champion setters of the Spiking Tigers. Mozzy Ravena, one of the pioneer commentators of the sport, is a 3-time champion. Young bloods Denise Tan, former Best Setter, and Mela Tunay are proving themselves eloquent as media personalities as well.

In the Shakey's V-League, the UST Tigresses is the winning-est team in the league, both in the collegiate and club categories, with six championships. This includes the inaugural championship, one back-to-back, and one three-peat. This also includes four silver finishes, and one bronze medal. They have entered the finals 10 out of the 14 times they've joined, while they've been in the semifinals for 13 out of the 14.

Before 2004: UAAP Powerhouse and Coach August Sta. Maria

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
The women's volleyball team of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) was a perennial UAAP powerhouse prior to the TV coverage of the games. During this time, the team already won 12 championships, the second most to another powerhouse in FEU. Led by longtime coach August Sta. Maria, the program produced numerous MVPs, National Team members and personalities which include Roxanne Pimentel, Natalie Cruz, Mozzy Ravena, Marilyn de Jesus, Vilet Ponce, to name a few. The team last won the championship in Season 60 in 1998.

    2004-2006: Shakey's V-League and the Double B

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
During the early 2000s, where FEU and DLSU dominated the UAAP, UST was a consistent part of the final four. But it was in 2004 when the Sports Vision established the Shakey's V-League, that UST began to rise in terms of program and popularity. The Tigresses won its inaugural championship, defeating then UAAP champions De La Salle Lady Archers. Prized transferee and youngest national team member that time and the league's first MVP, Mary Jean Balse, spearheaded their campaign alongside Roxanne Pimentel, Rubie De Leon, Joyce Pano and the Co Yu Kang sisters.

However, the Lady Archers reasserted their dominance against the Tigresses, winning the UAAP Season 67 championship, and the next two conferences of the V-League. All of which saw UST placing as the first runner up. Balse won the Rookie of the Year plum.

In 2005, UST was in rebuilding mode following the graduation of their big guns. Venus Bernal and Balse were the ones left to lead a team with formidable rookies in Aiza Maizo, Angeli Tabaquero, new setter Denise Tan, and Lilet Mabbayad. The promising team placed 4th in UAAP Season 68 after being eliminated yet again by the DLSU Lady Archers in the Final Four. Mabbayad won the Rookie of the Year plum.

2006-2007: Golden Era and live volleyball TV coverage

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
Following the team's decision to skip the Shakey's V-League for the first time, the team went into the UAAP Season 69 under the radar. While defending champion DLSU was suspended for a year, last year's 2nd and 3rd placers, Adamson and FEU, respectively, were the heavy favorites. However, the Tigresses breezed through the eliminations with only one loss against FEU that placed them as the second seed in the Final Four, armed with a twice-to-beat advantage. There, they faced a scrappy Adamson team who took Game 1 of the semifinals. But the Tigresses find another wind and swept Adamson in Game 2, and FEU in the finals in two games, with a loss of only one set. Venus Bernal won the Finals MVP award as UST snagged their 13th championship.

With an intact core and the acquisition of UE ace player Suzanne Roces, the squad returned to the Shakey's V-League and achieved back to back championships against upcoming rival San Sebastian College to win their 2nd and 3rd championship of the league. Bernal and Balse once again led the charge winning the MVP plums during that year.

2007-2008: Missing the Finals; August retires

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
Volleyball was starting to get attention in this period. Shakey's partnered with the UAAP to cover the whole tournament for the first time. Defending UAAP champions UST faced a challenging year with key losses in Maizo and Mabbayad due to academic deficiencies. However, highly recruited UST high school standout setter Rhea Dimaculangan joined the seniors squad together with returnees Bernal, Balse, Tabaquero, Joanna Torrijos, and Hannah Mance.

After the eliminations, the Tigresses wound up tied with Adamson and FEU with identical 12-2 records, but falling to 2nd/3rd playoff due to poor quotient. There, they faced nemesis FEU Lady Tamaraws who defeated them twice in the eliminations. They lost the playoffs and was delegated as the 3rd seed, where they will meet the Rachel Daquis-led Lady Tamaraws once again in the Final Four playoffs. After a gallant stand in pushing the match in 5 sets, the Tigresses succumb to eventual champions FEU, losing the crown, in what would be the last match of Bernal and Balse in the UAAP. This also served as the last season for perennial mentor August Sta. Maria who left his post to assistant Cesael "Shaq" Delos Santos.

2008-2009: Maizo era; Shaq takes over

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
Surrounded with uncertainties in the lineup, UST opted to skip the 1st conference of season 5 of the V-League, however returned in the 2nd conference with Balse and Bernal as guest players. Third scorer Angeli Tabaquero skipped this season. UST finished runner up to San Sebastian for the first time.

In the UAAP Season 71, come-backing ace player Aiza Maizo, the newly appointed team captain, lead the squad together with a rookie class composed of Maika Ortiz, Judy Caballejo and Bernice Co to join holdovers Dimaculangan, Mance, Jessica Curato and Kimberly Lazaro. The team won the bronze place, losing to eventual runner-up FEU anew in the Final Four. Maizo established herself as the new queen tigress, winning the Best Attacker award and leading the scoring department in the UAAP.

2009-2010: UAAP, V-League and Unigames Championships

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
After a promising season 71, UST returned to the 6th season of the V-League in 2009 and won back to back championships against SSC-R and AdU respectively. Aside from Maizo, UST acquired the services of V-League legends Balse, Pimentel and Michelle Carolino to carry the scoring cudgels. Angeli Tabaquero returned to play her final year, while high school standouts Maruja Banaticla and Dindin Santiago moved up in the senior ranks.

Aside the two V-League championships, the Tigresses also won the Unigames crown sweeping UAAP champs DLSU. Touted as the favorites coming into UAAP Season 72, the girls lost their first elimination round match against DLSU in 5 sets. It was also the first time in UAAP history that they lost against the rising Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles in 5 sets to end 2009. But at the start of 2010, the team went on a winning tear: they swept the second round, defeated ADMU in the Final 4, and swept DLSU in the finals where they cropped their 14th UAAP crown. Rhea Dimaculangan won the Best Server and Finals MVP.

Following a streak of championships, UST joined the 1st conference of the 7th season of the V-League, parading an intact lineup with Balse and Carolino as guest players. The team won a record 6th championship, still unmatched and their last as of writing, to cap a season with 5 championships.

2010-2012: Key losses, another change in coaching

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
Despite being the hottest collegiate team in the country, the team suffered major blows in terms of lineup and recruitment. Tabaquero exhausted her playing years, Hannah Mance and ace libero Jessica Curato were sidelined due to academics, Dindin Santiago transferred to National University, and high school standouts Alyssa Valdez and Kim Fajardo decided to join Ateneo and La Salle, respectively. UST won the 2010 Unigames crown with a depleted lineup which included no substitute in the middle blocker position.

During their title defense in UAAP Season 73, the combined efforts of the returnees Maizo, Ortiz, Caballejo, Banaticla, Dimaculangan and rookies Midori Hirotsuji and Dancel Dusaran pushed the team to the finals after a 10-4 record in the eliminations and beat Adamson in the final four. However, last year's finalists, DLSU Lady Spikers swept the Tigresses in the finals, breaking their streak of 6 championships in a row. This also served as Aiza Maizo's swan song to the UAAP after collecting the Best Scorer and Best Receiver awards. This was also Shaq Delos Santos' last coaching stint in UST.

Men's team assistant coach Arthur "Odjie" Mamon was appointed as the new head coach of UST in 2011. The Unigames that year served as their only off season preparation. However, with a virtually new team, the Tigresses lost in the Quarterfinals against Adamson, ending their two-year reign in the tournament. Rookies Ingrid Reyes, Pamela Lastimosa, Jessey De Leon and Carmela Tunay ushered in a new era for UST.

In UAAP Season 74, the pair of Banaticla and Caballejo won the first Beach Volleyball crown for UST women's, beating Valdez and Bea Tan of ADMU.

In the indoor tournament, the team finished 3rd in the eliminations with a 9-5 record. However, they lost in the final four to the Valdez-led ADMU Lady Eagles, dropping in the finals for the first time in 2 years. Banaticla and Ortiz were the top scorers, while team captain Dimaculangan served her final year with the team. Ortiz won as the Best Attacker.

The team joined the 9th season of the V-league, acquiring a Thai guest player for the first time in Nen Utaiwan alongside Ging Balse. They finished runner-up to ADMU Lady Eagles in a nail-biter Game 3.

    2012-2016: Final Four drought

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
In 2012, Banaticla and Caballejo successfully defended their beach volleyball crown to start their hopes for UAAP Season 75. The indoor team opted to skip V-League and the Unigames. Judy Caballejo was appointed new team captain. They had a remarkable opening round win against defending champs DLSU Lady Spikers in 5 sets. They also won the first UAAP volleyball game held in the MOA Arena against the rising NU Lady Bulldogs led by former Tigress Dindin Santiago. However, the team fell short in the remaining games and ended in a tie for 4th spot with NU. They lost the playoffs for 4th, marking the first time since 2001 that UST will not be included in the Final Four. Ortiz and Caballejo played their last game.

In the following V-League, UST dropped in the finals for the first time in tournament history after losing to ADMU in the semifinals. New mother Aiza Maizo returned to action that year.

In 2013, Banaticla returned to the beach volley tournament of UAAP Season 76, this time with Lastimosa. They lost in the finals against the Adamson pair of Bang Pineda and Amanda Villanueva, failing to achieve the three-peat. In the 2013 Unigames, UST won their 3rd title in 5 years in the tournament after defeating the FEU Lady Tamaraws in 5 sets. Jessey De Leon was hailed MVP.

In the UAAP Season 76 indoor tournament, Banaticla opted to sit-out her final year, and left the team under new captain and main setter, Loren Lantin. UST's tallest recruit in years, Ria Meneses played for the first time. However, their quest to return to the final four fell short after placing 6th with a 5-9 card, their lowest rank in the Final Four era.

2014 sparked new hopes for the embattled squad. UST high school sensation Ennajie Laure, fresh from a championship, joined the seniors squad, and won the Best Scorer plum in the V-league 11th season, where UST placed 4th, losing to FEU in the Bronze Medal match. Also this year, Cebuana rookies Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera reclaimed the Beach Volleyball crown for UST's 3rd crown, sweeping the tournament.

Hopes in the UAAP Season 77 indoor campaign was high following the V-League and Lastimosa's appointment as team captain, however inconsistencies and under-performance of the seniors plagued the team. Rookies Laure and Rondina traded tasks in the scoring cudgels. They still wound up at a tie for 4th with FEU with a 6-8 standing, however losing the playoffs in a heart-breaking 5-set match, extending the final four drought to 3 years. Odjie Mamon stepped down as head coach right after the game. EJ Laure won the Rookie of the Year award, the first time since Lilet Mabbayad, while Ria Meneses was awarded Best Blocker.

In 2015, high school coach Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes was appointed as the head coach, marking the 3rd time in a span of 6 years that UST changed its head coach. His first assignment was the V-League season 12 campaign, where they once again finished 4th. Team captain Pamela Lastimosa suffered an ACL injury leaving the captain-ship to sophomore EJ Laure.

Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera failed to duplicate last year's beach volley success and dropped to 5th place after losing to eventual champions Fajardo/Demecillo of DLSU.

In UAAP Season 78, UST lost its first match against Adamson, while getting an upset win against the DLSU Lady Spikers. During this time, the Ateneo Lady Eagles were dominating the league including a streak of wins against UST dating back to Season 74. UST once again failed to enter the final four, ending at 6th with a 5-9 standing. This served as Tunay, De Leon and Reyes' last playing year.

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
To further improve on the current lineup, some of the girls joined club teams in the Philippine Superliga. Laure and Rondina played for Foton, while Meneses, Cortez, Cabanos and Rivera played for Generika. While in the Collegiate Conference of the V-League, the team sent its other players alongside high school standouts Eya Laure, EJ's sister and ace setter Maji Mangulabnan.

Despite failing to advance in the semifinals for the first time in tournament history, UST re-joined in the Reinforced Conference that year, this time with a complete lineup, including the returning Pam Lastimosa. The Tigresses zoomed their way to the semifinals against teams with imports. The team pushed eventual champions Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors in the semis, before succumbing to the Bali Pure Water Defenders in the bronze medal match.

The team also joined the 2016 Unigames and swept the tournament including a win against UAAP champions DLSU Lady Spikers. This was their 4th title in 7 years. After their off-season campaigns, the team was sent to Thailand, the first out of the country training of the program.

In the UAAP Season 79, Cherry Rondina returned to the beach volley tournament, this time with new partner Jem Gutierrez. The pair swept the eliminations before finally winning UST's 4th BVB crown overall against FEU's Bernadette Pons and Kyla Atienza.

During the indoor tournament, UST had their best record since season 74 at 9-5, which eventually pushed them back into the UAAP Final Four for the first time in 5 years. They were the number 3 seeds in the final four and faced the DLSU Lady Spikers who ousted the team in 4 sets.

    2017-present: Strengthening the bid

    [CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]
The team continue to send its players to various club teams. Laure remained in Foton, while Rondina and Meneses combined in Petron. Mary Pacres and Alina Bicar were tapped by the Power Smashers in the Premier Volleyball League, while Rivera and Lastimosa played for Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors. Graduates Chloe Cortez (Generika) and Alex Cabanos (Creamline) also made the pro ranks.

News of Ria Meneses sitting out her final year surprised the team.

In the UAAP Season 80 BVB tournament, Rondina won her unprecedented 3rd championship and 3rd MVP plum, together with last year's Rookie of the Year, Caitlyn Viray. The team swept the tournament including the finals against FEU's Pons and Atienza.

Shannen Palec was appointed as the new team captain of the UST Tigresses.

[center-hidden]:kitty: The Golden Volleyant Legion (GVL) :kitty:[/center-hidden]
The Golden Volleyant Legion is the newly-formed support group composed of fans of the UST Volleyball teams from different parts of the globe.

Gold, one of the main colors of the UST athletic teams, encompasses their glorious tradition throughout the years and also symbolizes the support group’s unfathomable level of passion in terms of reinforcement.

‘Volleyant Legion’, on the other hand, was lifted from the last line of the UST Hymn “…ever your valiant legions imbued with unending grace.”, with a little wordplay to incorporate ‘Volleyball’ in it. It is an allusion to the Church’s army who are perpetually showered with grace… grace for every endeavour; grace for every victory and accomplishment; and the same grace for every downfall or defeat.

More than the position, the playing minutes will be crucial for Teope and Bangad.

The star players will need to be fielded in at some point. We don't want the local fans to be disappointed.

Wala pa bang maayos na livestream? Haha.
