LADY FALCONS BARGE INTO PVL SEMIS, BUT LOSE GALANZA TO INJURY
Akari Sports AKARI SPORTS SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 0 VIEWS

Eli Soyud recovered from a mini-slump to lead Adamson to a three-set romp over CSB and a slot in the semifinals of the PVL Collegiate Conference Monday night at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Soyud had 18 points off 11 hits, four aces and three blocks for the Lady Falcons, who looked shaky in the first two sets before taking control in the third set of the 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 triumph — their fourth straight.

The win, however, came at a massive cost after superstar Jema Galanza injured her ankle in the third frame.

Galanza grimaced in pain after stepping on a Lady Blazer who entered her landing spot after a spike attempt.

The team captain was rushed to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center, where she is set to undergo tests as of posting time.

Chiara Permentilla added 10 points while Galanza had nine — her lowest output of the tournament — before getting stretchered off the court.

Veterans Ranya Musa and Rachel Austero combined for 27 points for the Lady Blazers, who remain winless in the conference.

GOOD NEWS: JEMA GALANZA COULD BE BACK FOR UAAP SEASON 80
Akari Sports AKARI SPORTS SEPTEMBER 26, 2017

Adamson superstar Jema Galanza might need a long time to recover from her injury, but she is expected to be ready just in time for the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament early next year.

Galanza was diagnosed with a tibio-talar dislocation on her right ankle, according to Dr. Edgar Eufemio, the chairman of the Cardinal Santos Medical Center’s Department of Orthopedics.

“(The ankle was) put back in place around 30 minutes post injury. X-ray looks okay, but will take an MRI to assess the soft tissue damage,” Eufemio, who specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy, said.

“She can move her toes and ankle and has no sensory deficits. I will decide what to do after the MRI, but I am inclined to do PRP injections to hasten healing,” he added.

Galanza suffered a gruesome ankle injury on Monday night as Adamson battled College of St. Benilde for their fourth straight win in the PVL Collegiate Conference.

The Lady Falcons were leading early in the third set when the Laguna native landed on the foot of Lady Blazer Felicia Cui, who entered Galanza’s landing spot after a spike attempt.

Writhing in pain and her right ankle apparently dislocated, Galanza, Adamson’s top scorer in the UAAP and the PVL, was stretchered off the court and rushed to the hospital.

Adamson and Akari management have been by Galanza’s side since the incident and have vowed to offer full support on her way to recovery.

“We’re giving Jema the best medical attention possible,” said Akari CEO Christopher Tiu. “We want her back in shape soon and hope she recovers fully.”

The outside hitter recalled the pain and difficulty she had right after the injury.

“Yung pain level kahapon, 10/10 talaga. As in sobrang sakit talaga,” Galanza described. “Halos buong legs ko na siya sumasakit nung di pa naibabalik. Pero nung nabalik siya, naging okay agad. Namamanhid na lang yung paa ko tapos maga siya.”

Carried away by the shock and emotion of Galanza’s unfortunate injury, coach Air Padda declared in post-game interviews that her prized ward might be out for the UAAP season.

Dr. Eufemio, however, said Galanza could be back in time for the start of the Lady Falcons’ attempt to return to the UAAP Final Four.

“With proper rehab, she should be okay to play in 12 weeks,” he said. “Competitively, maybe in 16 weeks. We will know more after the MRI.”

Galanza is just happy for the support she’s been receiving since the game that changed her life forever.

“Syempre gusto ko pasalamatan yung family ko, yung Akari na talagang pumunta dito. Yung friends ko na nanood kahapon, andito silang lahat. Talagang siksikan kami sa room para lang kamustahin ako,” she said.

And when she returns to San Marcelino to start her rehabilitation, Galanza has one request for the Adamson community.

“Pag nakita nila ako, wag silang maawa. Ayoko yung ganun. Gusto ko positive lang lagi. Ngiti lang.”

  • RETURNING MHAY ROQUE OFFERS REST OF PVL CAMPAIGN TO JEMA GALANZA

After sitting out the first three games in the PVL Collegiate Conference, Mhay Roque finally returned to action last Monday when Adamson faced CSB at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Roque’s return, however, came at an unfortunate moment, as she was called to replace Jema Galanza, who just suffered a scary fall early in the third set.

With the Lady Falcons within grasp of a straight-sets win over the Lady Blazers, the superstar and skipper twisted her ankle which silenced fans and players alike from both sides of the venue.

Coach Air Padda’s side went on to control the game and take their fourth straight win for a semifinals ticket, but the rest of the Lady Falcons knew that it may have come at a huge cost.

“Malaking kawalan talaga. Sabi nga ng coaches, siya ang heart and soul ng team. Gustong-gusto niya talaga manalo,” Roque told Akari Sports.

“Sa training, all-out talaga siya, lalo na sa game. Dapat mag-step up talaga lahat, ipagpatuloy ‘yung nasimulan ni Jema.”

Roque, herself coming from a lengthy ACL injury that kept her on the sidelines during the last UAAP season, was optimistic that her return would boost Adamson further as they enter the PVL Final Four.

But things in San Marcelino took an unexpected and ugly turn with Galanza’s injury.

“Siyempre malungkot lahat pero sabi nila coach, kailangan namin magpakalakas para kay Jema. Dapat mag-step up kami para kay Jema kasi sinimulan niya itong laban. Gusto lang namin masuklian lahat ng ginawa niya hanggang sa makabalik siya.”

It’s not all bad news for Adamson, though, as medical reports show that Galanza could be back just in time for the 80th UAAP volleyball wars.

“(The ankle was) put back in place around 30 minutes post injury. X-ray looks okay, but will take an MRI to assess the soft tissue damage,” Dr. Edgar Eufemio, who specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy, said.

But without Galanza in their fold for the rest of their PVL campaign, the Falcons know that the conference is only going to get tougher.

“Sobrang high-morale na sana ng team, pero kahit may hindi inaasahang mangyari, ipagpapatuloy pa rin namin,” Roque said. “Kung kailan sana nagbubuild-up na at nag-gegel na ang team… pero ipagpapatuloy pa rin namin para kay Jema.”

Facing San Beda on October 2 for their last game of the elimination round, Roque and the rest of Adamson remains unfazed even without their most hard-working player in and out of the court.

“Tatapusin namin ito para kay Jema. Para sa kanya ‘to. Alam naming babalik siya, malakas ‘yun eh.”
