Lionsgate Eyes SAW VIII For Spring 2015 Release

Back in November of last year, Lionsgate was actively developing SAW VIII, continuing the franchise launched by the original horror film from James Wan and Leigh Wannell. Say what you want about the series and how things went downhill creatively once SAW V hit theaters but it has been hugely profitable for the studio, grossing a combined $873.3M worldwide. Today, it was revealed that Lionsgate has an idea of when we should expect the eighth installment to hit the big screen, even though there isn’t an official writer or director attached to the project as of right now.

Daniel J. Heffner, who co-produced the first two entries in the series was speaking at Ithaca College’s film school over the weekend and revealed that Lionsgate has been working on the script for SAW 8 for three years now and if all goes according to plan, the film should hit theaters next spring. Now the SAW films have been known for opening in October but with the Halloween season bringing forth competition from not only the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise but a host of other supernatural horror films, Heffner stated that the decision was made to give up on that holiday tradition.

The final chapter, SAW 3D hit theaters back in October of 2010 and was a letdown to say the least. At this point, it doesn’t look like James Wan and Leigh Wannell will be involved with the development of the next installment but I for one wouldn’t be opposed to someone coming in with fresh eyes to change things up a bit. There were rumblings that a remake was in the works but nothing ever came of that. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what games Jigsaw and Lionsgate will have up their sleeve come 2015.

Killer Blockbuster Franchise "Saw" Makes Goriest Comeback in Upcoming "Jigsaw" Movie
    via press release

After more than fourteen years and grossing $874 million worldwide, one of the most critically acclaimed horror franchise is back, taking the Jigsaw killer’s signature brand of twisted scenarios to the next level in “Jigsaw”

Considered as one of the goriest films in Hollywood horror history, the “Saw” franchise which was launched on the big screen in 2004 has become a timeless cult-classic in people’s Halloween must-watch slasher film list, and now it is back on its’ eight installment, making sure that audiences begin to hide and run for their lives all over again.

The newest instalment’s story takes off 10 years after the death of sociopath killer, John Kramer, who is also known as the “Jigsaw Killer” or simply “Jigsaw”. After a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement officers find themselves chasing the ghost of a man dead for over a decade and embroiled in a new game that’s only just begun.

Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a killer with designs of their own?

In a story by the Daily Mail, Tobin Bell who will be reprising the role of John Kramer/Jigsaw for the 8th time, had only praises for the stellar filming and script of the newest franchise.

“'I think it's a good time. And I'd always hoped for as good a script as this one was. It's a terrifying thrill ride, a different texture to past instalments. I think the producers have done an amazing job continuing to connect the dots from film to film.”

Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, and a new set of all-star casts including, Matt Passmore (“Fifty Shades of Grey”), Callum Keith Rennie (“Flashpoint”), Cle Bennett, Mandela Van Peebles (“We the Party”, “Roots”), Laura Vandervoort (“Haven”, “Smallvile”), Britanny Allen (“All my Children”) and Paul Braunstein (“Haven”).

“Jigsaw” cuts in theaters nationwide starting November 1 from Pioneer Films.
