DID it my WAY:lol:

Kaya kahit elims game nabibigyan nila ng buhay yung laro that made it watchable.

Golden Era yung late 80s early 90s na English. Sev, Bill Velasco, Butch Maniego and Andy Jao

Not gonna lie, I didn't see/hear a lot of these guys; some of them I caught maybe one time or when watching a replay, but nonetheless I can remember a few of them.

Si Eala mahilig magbigay ng nicknames. Some of them stuck, 'yung iba naman sablay. He is probably the only person in the history of humanity to have uttered the words Andy "the Eagle" Seigle.

Si Butch Maniego if I'm remembering him correctly is that guy who sounds like he's slowly melting yema in his mouth while speaking--and I didn't mean that to be a compliment.

Si Jolly Escobar parang nasa tagayan lang, which is jarring at first, pero after you listen to him a few games masasanay ka din.

Sa quotes a few I can remember (not actual quotes; just how I remember them):

Dominic Uy: James Yap is taking too many shots; 17 shots per game is too much.

Yeng Guiao: Para sa 'kin he's not taking too many shots. Kulang pa nga 'yan. He's a superstar; he should be taking more than 17 shots.

Magoo Marjon: ... Former two-time MVP James Yap.

Jason Webb: Former two-time MVP.

Chino Trinidad: (after Mendoza's intended buzzer-beater got blocked) And that's why Paolo Mendoza is not gonna be a good two-guard in the PBA. (Then after a break if I remember correctly) Kung si Kenneth Duremdes tumira nun, hindi 'yun masasapal.

But sa 'kin the most annoying was Patricia Hizon. Nothing personal against her, happy for her successes now and all that, but man, she was unbearable. Pilit na pilit.

And then there was that halftime show, PBA on AKTV (?) or something like that. They'd go pustahan, Pat will dial it up a notch, and everybody will act as if it all mattered one way or another. I think I stopped watching the PBA for a long time after that.
  • PlainspokenPlainspoken Member ✭✭
Also, I agree with some of the guys here re the coverage being in English. Dati the PBA was a premier entertainment brand, attracting mamahalin sponsors. Then binakya nila, to follow the trend then in the local TV scene, in the process alienating the A-B and maybe a good chunk of the C crowd. Tinagalog ang coverage, sa opening pinagko-costume 'yung mga players, tapos may slogan pa na no one will be caught dead repeating (Bayan ng Superstars 'ata muna tas Kampihan Na! saka Atin 'To!) and may kanta (Don't know who made that awful Queen rip-off, but later on the PBA went full Gloc-9 men para astig! Rap para in!) plus may dancers parang noontime show.

Tapos sa office it makes me mad when someone who has never picked up a basketball in his life looks down on me just because I watch the PBA; NBA lang daw gusto niya, pero bandwagon naman (BOS fan one year, CLE the next).

Anyway baka medyo OT na so pasensya na, pero it makes me wonder what could've happened if, after Vintage, ABS-CBN got to carry the PBA (instead of ABC5).
  • James Ty IIIJames Ty III Member ✭✭✭
ABS-CBN could have been perfect for the PBA but the league didn't want ABS to control the league's marketing.

And many PBA board members prefer Channel 2 because S+A, for them, has limited reach. They obviously don't know that S+A is now available on digital TV.

Can anyone recall what year/season lumabas yung PBA saglit sa S+A? If I remember correctly, those had Ch.5 commentators and presentation still, talagang yung airtime lang sa Ch. 23.

Last two conferences of the 2010-11 season. That was the time RPN 9 became ETC. Then starting late 2011, AKTV/TV5 na.

Actually Solar and BTV produced the PBA TV coverage during the time it was shown on the old Studio 23
