Back in MMFF 2016, the love team of Joshua Garcia and Julia Baretto proves themselves irrefutable as an onscreen couple in their breakout film, Vince & Kath & James. Now, roughly a year later, they return to the big screen with Love You to the Stars and Back – a film that is as spellbinding as its title makes it out to be. Antoinette Jadaone, helmer of 2014’s ‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ is in control of this drama-romance film, and she makes sure that things don’t go south with her seasoned filmmaking at bay to accompany the trip. After seeing JoshLia make our hearts flutter in Theodore Boborol’s rom-com, it is only apt to question and wonder what more these two can do. LYSB still does offer the “kilig” that we grew fond of, but being a Jadaone vehicle, one could only begin to surmise that there’s more beneath the surface than just that; it’s profound, cuts deep, and is a bolder feature than what you’d expect from their contemporaries. Love You To the Stars and Back acts deceptively, starting by showing hints of tense drama in the background, while simultaneously building up its lead characters in the foreground. As this happens, we get to see what’s within these people, putting them in situations that sees both of them reflecting and learning more about life as they head to their destination.

Granted, the trip that we take on with them may have some bumps during the first half, so much so that it feels quite empty, but nonetheless, Jadaone transforms the mundane into something extraordinary like she always does to ensure a seamless connection between the film and its viewers. This is a skill of hers that is proven and tested, and it is greatly helps this outing from becoming less like the usual fare, and more of an outstanding entry from Star Cinema’s catalogue in years.

We engage in conversations sprinkled with magic, allowing for Garcia and Baretto to shine brighter than ever before. Jadaone effortlessly shows what she can do to these two young stars, and raw brilliance is the remarkable result of her molding. Garcia and Baretto’s emotional range is explored with depth through multiple scenes that deliver the promise that they’re tasked to fulfill. Among the two, Garcia is the most prominent, playing Caloy who is struggling with leukemia. For such a depiction, you might think that sympathy is all there is, but, the actor behind the character grounds himself in realism, without pretense, that triggers our empathy.

It’s a heartbreaking portrayal, but one gleaming bright with optimism that graces the film entire. Baretto, on the other hand, plays Mika, a believer with troubles – enticing with charisma. While all the praise surrounding Garcia & Baretto is well-earned, and rightfully so, the story that they set foot on is equally worthy of appraisal – mostly for its maturity that gets the right treatment considering the film’s nature. For a mainstream feature, the narrative that unfolds, in ways that almost completely captivates us with its allure, and is bold in its thematic execution of life’s troubles, existentialism, familial stresses, and other topics that it discusses with a distinctive flair. Rainbows and sunshine may be present in its field, yet it is brave enough to face its rather sensitive subject matters without coming off as manipulative. Its tone may transition into shakier and devastating areas to make the gravitas apparent, but nevertheless, its heart brimming with hope remains intact for it not to fall into total melancholy. Love You to the Stars and Back gets the formula right, and with Jadaone’s top-notch direction, it even manages to invigorate what was long-lost in Star Cinema’s love stories; magic. That’s about what makes it so hard not to love and cherish.

There’s magic in every corner, and it has ourselves believing once again – in love, in life, and not to sound blunt, but in the gargantuan film studio’s capabilities that have been doubted recently. It is also indicative that the tandem of Joshua Garcia and Julia Baretto could soon be iconic but for now, their meteoric rise is one to be sought after – they could be stars bigger than they were before in the nick of time, and are reliable enough with two wonderful films serving as proof. If you still have doubts about our rom-com genre in this day and age, then let Love You to the Stars and Back change your perception because it gets the job done with such ease. More than that, it has us wishing that its two leads receive more solid projects like this in the future, and that, every Star Cinema outing should be of the same quality. Props to Jadaone, and everyone involved in its making. This is one romantic-drama too brilliant not to talk about, and for that, it might as well nab the spot of one the best Filipino films of recent memory. Simply, put, this is a genre classic in the making.

Ano to? 100M na? Sana. Iba talaga kung nag100M ang movie.

And since overwhelming good reviews ang 2 movies ng JL siguro naman they already built a reputation that they are good actors with good movies.

Hopefully magclick rin ang The Good Son.

And since maganda maghype ang DS I expect a lot of hyping when the show starts. Of course to sustain the hype I'm really hoping na maganda yung story. 3rd slot ito so I don't expect big ratings but I hope the show can get 20%+ rating during it's run.

And sana mag 6months rin ang TGS.

60M is 60M. Mostly casual viewers and market ng JoshLia. Dahil sa talent nila at ganda ng mga projects na na-assign sa kanila, the viewers especially dun sa nakapanood na see them as the roles that they played in the movie and not as actors get paid just for fan service.

At least they have something different to offer. Kaya good job to both of them.

Confident naman ako sa 100M. The movie deserves to be viewed by many. They thought it would be a good strategy na gamitin ang word of mouth. It did in some ways. Need nila yan since sa ibang bansa kinuhaan.

So when they saw it na parang kakaiba, nagduda sila or natakot kasi parang experiment. Matutuwa ba sila o magagandahan kasi they don't know what to expect. Sa susunod kapag may movie ulit sila, since associated na sila sa quality film, may market na sila agad na magtitiwala sa produkto na gagawin nila.

True. Isang hit serye na lang kulang for Joshua.

They said mala-Riverdale yata to.

Alam nila yung kiliti. So walang bigger shoes to fill in. :)

Sana naman. For Joshua. Kung pwede i-extend din ng bongga. :glee:

Kalerks naman yung sa FB page so sa weekend pa mag-update ng gross for this week, same sa Box Office Mojo  Sana naman mag-update na ulit ang Star Cinema. :rotflmao: 100M will push a JoshLia movie again next year. Hoping with Inang or CGM.

Di daw pasado sa SC standards for box office. They were waiting for the movie to fail sa umpisa pa lang. To think social media lang ang ganap ng JoshLia but they manage to pull it off.

It's the thought that counts. :D

Baka bukas pa yan sis. Bukas yung ika-14 days. Jusko naman 100M na. Ang lakas naman nung movie nung weekend. Punuan so siguro naman nag 100M or more pa yun. 😃

True. Ineexpect nila agad na nag-300M. Yung big LTs ngayon hindi naman agad nag-300M first solo movies nila. Partida may PT exposure pa sila and compared to LYSB, JLs movie got good reviews. Sana kasi wala ng pagcocompare. 🙄

Pag natuloy si Julia sa TGS at pumatok tapos magka-movie sila under CGM or Inang, ramdam ko makaka-200M tayo. 😁
