Denis Villeneuve's DUNE (Legendary Pictures)

MasterVaderMasterVader PEx Influencer ⭐⭐⭐
Late last night, Brian Herbert (son of Dune author Frank Herbert) went on Twitter and made it official: Denis Villeneuve will direct a new adaptation of the Dune series for Legendary Pictures.

Here's the exact Tweet:

We'd been hearing this might be the case for some time now, but this is our first official confirmation that Villeneuve has committed to the project. As we speak, the director (nominated for an Oscar this year for his work on Arrival) is currently finishing up Blade Runner 2049, which is still on target to arrive this October. Villeneuve directing Dune is great news, for both fans of Herbert's original source material and fans of Villeneuve. This is an excellent pairing.

Meanwhile, I'm somewhat curious about the wording in Herbert's Tweet, specifically the phrase "the exciting new DUNE series film project". A while back we heard that Legendary wanted to launch a new franchise based around Herbert's novels (there was even a suggestion that there might be a new TV series to go along with it), so does this mean that Villeneuve's going to direct more than one? I don't think that's a safe bet at the moment - for any number of reasons - but I'll be interested to get some clarification on that end of things.

What do you guys think? You excited for this or what?

The first Dune adaptation by the way is directed by David Lynch.

I think a trilogy of films and a TV series can do justice to the sheer expansiveness of Frank Herbert's masterpiece.

Wouldn't mind just as long as they make the Fremen, the sandworms and Spacing Guild Navigators look right

Timothée Chalamet Will Headline Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE

    Meet the new Paul Atreides.

In a new report that is all but guaranteed to send segments of Twitter into absolute fits of unhinged hysteria, The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet is in official negotiations to headline Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaptation.

For those unfamiliar with Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel (or David Lynch's not-so-classic 1984 adaptation), THR offers the following succinct synopsis:

"The novel, initially published in the 1960s, tackled political, religious and environmental themes through a sci-fi lens, telling the complex story of a fallen ruling family’s attempt to control a desert planet named Arrakis and its export, a rare spice drug, while being betrayed by a galactic emperor."

Should everything go according to plan, Chalamet will be playing the lead role of Paul Atreides, the character played by Kyle Machlachlan in Lynch's version of the film. Atreides is the son of the ruler of the aforementioned "fallen ruling family", who - after being forced to escape into Arakis' desert wastelands - finds himself adopted as a messiah figure by the nomadic people he encounters there. Eventually, Atreides leads an army to combat the villainous empire that's horned in on his family's territory, and also he rides a giant sandworm or something.

Look, it's been a while since I saw Dune.

Anyway, this is very exciting casting. Chalamet's age-appropriate for the role according to Herbert's original text, and has proven himself one of the more exciting up-and-coming actors in Hollywood over the past few years. We're still kinda amazed that Dune's actually moving ahead after Villeneuve's last would-be sci-fi epic (Blade Runner 2049) failed to set the world on fire, but this is not a complaint. We fully expect this to be a truly epic take on Herbert's source material.

Nothing further to report at this time, but with the film's most central role close to being locked in - and with an early 2019 start date fast approaching - we should expect to hear much more about Dune in the weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned for all that, gang.

CHALAMET, BROLIN ARE DESERT-BOUND IN NEW DUNE IMAGE

Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides is mesmerised by the desert in a newly released image from Warner Bros.’ epic adventure “Dune,” in Philippine cinemas January 2021.

The new photo shows Paul (Chalamet) and his weapons teacher Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) in an ornithopter as it goes airborne.

Director Denis Villeneuve provided some insights on the new image, sharing, “It’s Paul’s first contact with the deep desert, where he’s mesmerised by it. He has a strange feeling of being home. There’s a lot of action at this specific moment, and [it’s] one of the scenes in the movie that I’m starting to get pretty proud of.”

Warner Bros.’ epic adventure “Dune” has revealed a brand new image, this time showing Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in deep training for what lies ahead.

Director Denis Villeneuve tells of the film’s hero Atreides: “His survival depends on being able to make the right decisions and adapt to different dangerous situations. It's a very beautiful story about someone that becomes empowered.  Like any young adult he is looking for his identity and trying to understand his place in the world, and he will have to do things that none of his ancestors were able to do in order to survive. He has a beautiful quality of being curious about other people, of having empathy, something that will attract him towards other cultures, and that's what will save his life.”

The film is slated for a January 2021 release in the Philippines from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary.
