Humanity needs culture, not religion

Religion is all about subservience and kowtowing to a particular symbol in order to suppress natural human drives because those are deemed chaotic and disruptive.

Culture is about channeling those drives into productive and artful outlets. For example, even the drive towards aggression, when expressed via martial arts, is turned into a beautiful performance.

When religion keeps evolving it eventually hits a certain point where it now becomes a culture. Fundamentalism can be seen as a regression towards a simpler, less evolved mindset that is unable to apprehend or handle culture.

I believe this was the case with Islam, which had its golden age when it contributed tremendous amounts of art and science to the world. Today, Islam (as represented in western media at least), has all the indications of being in its Dark Ages, where its main indulgence is in its attack of people who don't share the same belief and a spreading - not of its associated art and culture - but of its proscriptions (e.g. we see halal food and sukuk finance proliferating today).

The problem with this is that you set your own definitions of religion and culture. Couldn't that religion permeates culture or culture breeds religion. You see we may create quasi questions which may arise depending on the philosopher. You philosophize on culture and religion and created a fancy or quasi or false dichotomy.

Religious fundamentalism is another thing.

We should stay away from religion or uncritical, dogmatic beliefs in deities and other symbols if we can and instead engage in culture to moderate our behavior and interactions.

Religion is mostly don'ts - NEGATIVE and SELF-DEFEATIST.

Culture is mostly do's and exploration of beauty - generally POSITIVE.

The distinction between the two is not necessarily black and white and is more of a gamut, but I consider culture a more evolved concept that eventually arises out of more primitive, barbaric religions (esp. the dogma-driven ones).

in our field, our college professors pointed out that culture is one of the biggest factor for the development of architecture. this includes religion. the most influential religions that made great achievements are those with living human demi-gods who pass down their POWER to their offsprings.

ang New Era college ay may architecture course. ano ba yun tinuturo nila sa history of architecure at theory of design?

Agree ako sa sinabi mo tungkol sa religion is culture, culture is tradition and tradition is culture. Ang hindi lang nag-aagree ay ang Christian theologian na naka-usap ko noon. Dati-rati pa iyon. Sabi niya sa akin, ang religion ay hindi culture. Interests daw ng mga tao iyon.

Natutuwa nga ako dahil mabuti talaga ay naisip mo siya. Ang akala ko noon ay ako lang ang nag-iisip ng ganito. Hindi pala. Agree ako.

So ito ang lumalabas na nakikita ko in a real, real world......

#1. Religion is culture. Ang majority founder ng religion ay men.

c. Allah
d. Buddha
...at maraming, maraming iba pa. Sabi ko, majority. Hindi man lahat pero karamihan. If baga ay outstanding and predominant ika nga.

#2. ---at dahil Religion is culture, well, ang ibig sabihin lang nun is patriarchal religion and so, patriarchal culture po siya.

I therefore conclude, na lahat ng majority ng bansa na napapaloob sa patriarchal culture lalo na ang famous major religion katulad ng Catholic, Islam, Judaism...... basta...... tipong kilalang religion ay religion ang naghuhubog po sa culture na ikinamulatan ng mga tao po. Patriarchal culture.

Iyon din po ang rason kung bakit sinasabi na ang culture ang malaking factor sa pagdevelop ng architecture at kasama na rin ang relihiyon---andiyan na din ang pagdevelop ng science and technology sapagkat nagkaroon na itinatawag na men's knowledge.

Ang masasabi ko na sobrang agree ako sayo. Talaga.

^ from what i have observed, intellectual thinking usually takes a down turn is a female psuedo-deity is in power.

for example:
cleopatra and the empress dowager. simply because they are too preoccupied in having the next male psuedo-deity. they are also busy eliminating any possible threats including intellectuals to their heirs. as a result, their military focuses in internal affairs instead of expanding their influence and gathering new technology from their neighbor empires.

Islam? Ayaw na ayaw ko ng Islam lalo na sa Saudi Arabia. Sila ang extreme patriarchal culture na ewan, kaya if meron lalake na gusto ako kausapin sa skype na galing Saudi Arabia, mas emotional detach ako o automatic, ayoko na kausapin.
