in Buhay Pinoy
The discussion started in this thread, pero off-topic na, so I created a separate thread.

In my opinion, the quality of MMFF films 10-15 years ago, on average, were higher than they are today. I noticed that around 10 years ago, the films started their dramatic drop in quality, and that it coincided with the movie franchises of Vic Sotto and Bong Revilla.
Star Cinema and GMA Films reversed their strategy and started to bankroll films starring the likes of Kris Aquino and Vice Ganda with very light plots. However, heavy promotions in their respective TV channels have turned these films into box office hits.
I don't know if it has always been the case that foreign films are banned for one to two weeks during the Christmas season. On the surface, this protectionist measure is beneficial to the local film studios, since they'll surely be assured of high ticket sales with foreign competition gone from the theatres.
My theory is that this strict 'foreign movie ban' during the two-week MMFF is the primary cause of the deterioration in the quality of our local MMFF films. Gone are the incentives of producing the likes of Muro Ami to compete with Hollywood box-office hits. Gone are the incentives of producing the thought-provoking and imaginative dramas that target movie-goers who had just watched the Hollywood box-office hit. The most rationale move for a film studio such as Star Cinema is to produce a sure-hit movie featuring Vice Ganda with a light script and tiring comedy, and promote it intensively on TV. And since these Vice Ganda movies turn into top grossers year-on-year, it's no wonder that we'll see another Vice Ganda comedy come Christmas time a year from today.
Do you think that we should keep the 'foreign movie ban' this time of the year? Do you agree/disagree that the absence of foreign competition is the main cause of our local films' deterioration come MMFF season?
Or are you of the opinion that there is no deterioration in the quality of our MMFF films for the past 10-15 years?

Walang problema sa light type of movies kahit anong genre pa yan comedy, romance, drama etc.
Yung ibang pelikula tig-isang araw lang ipalabas tas pinu-pull out agad. Malamang may kalokohan sa loob. Ayaw ba nilang malamangan sa kita? Tangena nila.

And yes, dapat alisin yang ban sa foreign movies.
- that's the mindset of the producers, directors.
- my theory is they don't have rivals that time. Pero if both would have been an entry to MMFF I don't think they wouldn't have grossed the way they used to.
At the end of the day movie-making is still a money-making. That's the bitter truth.
Then remove the MMFF. The stated goal of that idiotic OPM only movies period is for the advancement and improvement of the Philippine movie industry. Let these cheap movies battle it out with good foreign films.
It also tells you where our society is heading.
How will you ignore if there is a ban on foreign films for a certain period? Sabi nila ginagawa daw yun in order daw to help and support our local films. Well there's a saying 'God helps those who help themselves'. It seems our local film industry is not helping themselves in order to get more audience. Rather than try to produce good films, they stick to the status quo and produce CRAPPY Vice Ganda- like movies, then let the cycle perpetuate.
the operative word is QUALITY... are you saying the crop of films that are being shown in the recent MMFF's are quality films?
There are already incentives in place that encourage film studios to produce high quality films. We have A and B film ratings that exempt movies from the amusement tax, and we have the actual MMFF awards. Still, Vice Ganda comedies have the highest ROI, in terms of magnitude and certainty.
The organizers are trying to compensate on this loss of quality by having a separate set for indie films, which are shown in only a few theaters.
Which is exactly why this MMFF nonsense has to be scrapped. Even those who are supposed to filter the films aren't doing their mandated jobs. It's not the first time that people have pointed out that the films being shown are trash. There is still no remedial action to get quality films shown during the festival which results in the MMFF mocking the purpose it is meant to be performing.
Media has to have some sort of social responsibility on what they show to their viewers.
Kung kita lang habol nila, show the movie outside the festival.
Kaya mas marami gusto ng manood ng indie films for quality movie kasi ginagawa nila iyong movie out of passion not for money.
