GMA 7 scraps Iloilo City news program, lays off 20 staff

ILOILO CITY — Giant broadcast network GMA 7 scrapped its news and public affairs program in Iloilo City on Monday, laying off about 20 officers, reporters, cameramen and other staff.

Monday’s scrapping of Ratsada 24 Oras comes seven months after the network laid off at least 80 employees and talents in regional stations in the Visayas purportedly under a “strategic streamlining” program.

Many of those laid off were regular employees of the network for about 10 years. They were told to attend an employees’ general assembly Monday morning at the station in Barangay Tabuc Suba in Jaro District were they were informed of their retrenchment.

[CROUCHING-TIGER-DISAPPEARING-SPOILER]The laid off employees will still receive their salaries until December, according to one of those affected who spoke to the INQUIRER on condition of anonymity.

Among those laid off were staff personnel in the news gathering operations, including three reporters and their cameramen, technical engineers and other personnel.

The Iloilo station has been reduced into a satellite office with around 11 personnel for marketing and sales.

The retrenched employees have been granted each a separation package that includes “generous” bonuses, according to one of the affected employees.

In April, the network laid off employees in their stations in Cebu, Iloilo and Bacolod cities.

It had issued a statement then that the network was undertaking a “strategic streamlining of programs and manpower in its provincial stations to ensure business competitiveness.”

The retrenchments came less than two weeks after GMA Network Inc. announced that its net profit for the three quarters of the year rose to P1.804 billion or 80 percent higher compared to the P1.001 billion recorded during the same period in 2014.

The broadcast network’s net income for the third quarter of this year alone rose by 66 percent to P706 million from P422 for the same period last year, according to a report posted on the network’s online news site GMA News Online.

The network expects its profits this year to reach P2 billion, above its projected target of P1.5 billion, according to the report.

The network is also enjoying a massive boost in ratings due to the phenomenal run of AlDub, the on-screen tandem of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza on noontime variety show Eat Bulaga.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stocks Exchange [highlight]GMA Network reported lower quarter to quarter advertising revenues from P3.14 billion in Q2 to P3.08 billion in Q3. The drop translates to a 2% decrease in ad revenues for channel 7 in spite of the surge in NUTAM ratings due to Eat Bulaga's ALDUB Phenomena.

GMA's channel 7 snatched back the lead in NUTAM last September 2015, with an average audience share of 37.4%, 2.5 points higher than ABS-CBN's 34.9% share. Bulk of this ratings boost is credited from Eat Bulaga's phenomenal numbers with its ALDUB love team. The drop in channel 7's ad revenues was mainly due to the losing performances of its weekday primetime line up, which are consistently defeated by counterparts in PrimetimeBida.

Eat Bulaga, through TAPE Inc, pays a fixed fee to GMA Network for buying its airtime. Thus any windfall from Eat Bulaga's commercial airtime has no direct effect on GMA's topline.

GMA Network is already working on maximizing advertising revenues by launching new primetime programs in 2016. The broadcasting firm's primetime line-up in 2016 includes the revival of Encantadia, and primetime series featuring GMA's bigget stars: Aden Richards, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.

With Political Ads already coming in, the continues popularity of ALDUB and the almost exclusive return of Colgate-Palmolive advertisements, GMA Network is far from reaching its maximum income potential.

GMA Network bring back Kapuso Primetime Cinema to resurrect TV ratings

    Published on: November 5, 2015

When it comes to local television channels there are only 2 strong networks that are battling it out on TV rating wars. ABS-CBN versus GMA Network has been the usual case since these 2 rival networks are the strongest among others.

Let’s face it, with so many reports that GMA Network is losing the battle for television rating supremacy to ABS-CBN, the losing TV station has to do something about it and it must be done quickly to offset the losses.

The continuous dwindling down of the Kapuso network ratings especially on primetime block programming in the past few years will certainly result to changes in the hopes of resurrecting the network. From the previous reported news of closing down provincial stations to revamping the program line up for primetime block viewing, it could be either of 2 things- one- the Kapuso network is on ‘damage control’ mode or two-to keep televiewers glued to help with the ratings.

Several of GMA Telebabad programs that are not making waves on TV ratings list are about to bid airtime adieu with coming soon finales for Beautiful Stranger, Legendary Woman and My Faithful Husband.

It was last December 2013 when GMA Network first launched the Kapuso Primetime Cinema and they are bringing it back again. A teaser has been shown on air about the comeback of Kapuso Primetime Cinema and they might air it right before the Kapuso late evening program Saksi.

With the upcoming Kapuso Primetime Cinema nightly presentation on GMA network which is schedule to replace the Koreanovela “Legendary Woman” on November 9, viewers will be treated to Hollywood blockbuster films and top rated movies that perfectly fit the discriminating taste of Filipino TV fanatics. This is also a good way to deviate from the usual drama soap operas that are being shown on local television.

It would be very different this year since GMA network is set to present the Kapuso Primetime Cinema on the timeslot usually allotted for Koreanovelas.

With the said changes in GMA’s primetime programming, this could give much leverage to Saksi and improve its standing against ABS-CBN evening news program Bandila.

Last 2 years ago the Kapuso Primetime Cinema has snatched away the most coveted evening TV program slots for Rhodora X and Carmela which failed in bringing in good TV ratings for the station.

As planned by GMA network TV to soon bring back Kapuso Primetime Cinema is another way to solve the network low rating. But one thing that GMA network TV has to consider is the fact that there are other viable options like a network overhaul or major station revamp.

GMA lays off more Iloilo station workers, scraps news program
    By: Louine Hope
    November 17, 2015 03:46 AM

ABOUT 20 employees of GMA Iloilo were laid off yesterday, seven months after some of the regular workers were initially sacked.

The second wave of retrenchment was followed by the scrapping of the local news program Ratsada 24 Oras.

A GMA Iloilo employee who agreed to talk albeit anonymously said about 20 to 30 workers were laid off including reporters, cameramen, and administrative staff.

Ranking GMA Network officials from Manila went to the regional station at Tabuc Suba village in Jaro, Iloilo City to deliver the news.

The employee said they expected the second batch of retrenchment to happen soon, following the laying off of fellow employees in Iloilo months ago.

“Sang first nga pag-lay off, may feeling na kami. But it was abrupt in a sense that it was informally served,” he said.

The employee, who worked with the Kapuso station for 15 years, said they are sad for losing the profession they loved.

But he said that they were compensated based on what was stated in the labor code and will receive their salary until December 15.

The local station will become a satellite office for sales and marketing.

Another reporter who worked for the station for 16 years but refused to be named said she has nothing against GMA.

“I am thankful for they have helped me a lot. Wala naglain ang buot ko sa natabo. Wala ta mahimo kun diri lang kutob. Move on na lang,” she said.

She said that they were told that the retrenchment was due to the regional station which is already losing.

“The station can no longer survive,” she said.

April this year, about 24 regular employees of GMA Iloilo were laid off including reporters, cameramen and talents.

The early morning show Arangkada was also scrapped.

Some of them sought for legal action against the station.

In a statement emailed to The Daily Guardian, GMA Network said the latest development is part of measures to improve regional stations.

“The strategic streamlining being undertaken in Iloilo is in keeping with previous measures of the Network geared towards increasing ratings and revenues of all its regional stations from more efficient operations,” the statement said.

The network said its Iloilo station will “continue as one of GMA's regional satellite selling stations.”

“As mentioned in an earlier statement, all affected personnel in Iloilo will be offered severance packages,” the statement said.

SEEN SCENE (Pilipino Star Ngayon) | Updated November 18, 2015

    NOVEMBER 12, 2015

    GUWAPONG-GUWAPO si Dingdong Dantes... check.

Perfect ang glamour team ni Megan Young in making sure na she always looks like the first Pinay Miss World kaya napapatawad siya kaagad kahit kahindik-hindik ang kanyang hosting booboos... check na check.

Patuloy itong ratings dud at eat nila ang dust of the Excelente Gang sa Pasion de Amor.

Deklarasyon ni kumareng Tsinita Doll, “LAST NA ‘TO, HA?! Someone should tell GMA-7 that this edition of StarStruck should be the last.

“Final-final na talaga, sabi nga ni Ina Montecillo of the Ang Tanging Ina series.

“And that network should seriously take its cue from the biggest stars of the moment... Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza na parehong reality search rejects... but look at where they are now!”

Agree or disagree ba kayo kay mareng Tsinita Doll?

Bakit ba hindi minamahal ang Starstruck? Kulang ba sa PR push? Parang.

Pero kahit anong PR push at the end of the day, what people want to see eh kung karapat-dapat bang mahalin ang mga inilalako.

“Tinimbang ka nguni’t kulang” ang arrive at vibe of the group now.

Walang mukhang Pinoy na Pinoy, ‘yung brown skin at barakung-barako like the late Marky Cielo or Rocco Nacino.

Hindi na ba kayang ibalik ang magic at pixie dust that its original director Lino Cayetano employed kaya phenomenal ang una nitong incarnation?

Ang template ba of the original brains, soul and heart of the program, bukod-tanging siya lang ang makakapag-execute? Hindi ba siya kinontak muli for this engagement?

Huling lambing at pakiusap, tanggalin n’yo na ang text votes as part of the percentage scores.

Di ba, collective ang reaksyon ninyong the WHO si Gretchen Espina!

Nawa’y hindi ganyan ang maging fate of the next StarStruck grand victors.

    AlDub, laylay na ang kalyeserye

    Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Eh, sa totoo lang, we’ve seen the teaser and we don’t find it funny at all, lalo na ‘yung eksena nina Vic Sotto and Ai Ai.
