Do they make Filipinos dumb? do they distract Filipinos from the real issues the country are facing?

Sila ba ang salarin sa mga over sensationalized news involving celebrities in our country?

I don't have a problem with the overwhelming showbiz in our country. But I have a problem with the lack of educational shows in our TV.

We need dumb or dumber Filipinos in this country. Wala tayong magiging YAYA at MAID...hindi ako marunong sa gawaing bahay :rotflmao:

Americans love gossiping too, mas oa pa nga kasi some paparazzi do not respect boundaries, e.g. TMZ.

Showbiz people here exploit the masa's kababawan by giving them more of what they want and making them feel special, all those "Mahal ko kayo" BS messages to the fans. Yuck.

I don't watch TV anymore. And even when I do, I rarely watch local channels. Puro kababawan talaga.

I don't get it. Ang dami mong mga observations (or should I say "nitpicks") dito sa forum na to about lack of progress in the Filipino culture and mentality, then now you're saying we need to keep dumb people dumb?

All of you who are abroad who left the country for a better life should agree with me here.

Please substantiate your premise that showbiztards are hurdles to the progress of this country.

May I just comment on the following:

Showbiz talk shows on TV (e.g. THE BUZZ)
    - The ratings of the TheBuzz is relatively lower than other programs. It means that fewer people watch it. More people watch news than TheBuzz. Not a good one to support any argument that you might have.

Lots and lots of gossip magazines and columns on tabloids
    - Who read tabloids nowadays? I'm not exactly sure but I do think the sale of tabloids has declined the past year. In other words, such has no significant impact to the people.

    - I don't visit such sites, but I digress . The internet usage is less than 50% in the Philippines. Read this:
    http://www.forward.ph/blog/the-state-of-philippine-internet-usage-2013-infographic/

It shows here that only 3.8 out of 10 Filipinos use the internet. This is very low to become a factor in hindering the progress of this country.

And if you see the breakdown of the usage, you would see that people would most likely visit other sites rather the entertainment sites (i.e. News and information, services).

Bottomline, I do believe that your premise is unsubstantiated. But I'm waiting how could you go around with it. Maybe you know some data that I don't know of.

  • I think gossiping is more on the women's problem rather than men. Gossiping and talking about celebrities are not a favorite pastime of the male species.

We're more into sports and other "guy" stuffs. :D

However, the local teleseries should seriously be changed as they occupy most of the time slots. The themes are all the same and recycled -- kidnappings, rich and poor, master and servant, guns and goons, crabs, back stabbing, plastics, covetousness, envy and etc. Pretty much a typical Filipino drama that never changes. It's way too evil and negative. This can have a strong influence to those who watch these shows and can affect behavior overtime.

I hope they change it to something educational or maybe, love stories like those from Korea. Something that influences good behavior and morals.

    From your link:

    1. 41.5% - time spent on social media (lots of showbiztards "wreaking havoc" there)

    2. "you would see that people would most likely visit other sites rather the entertainment sites (i.e. News and information, services)" - there are a lot of showbiz crap tucked in news and information sites....

    3. Non internet users - rely on prime time news (with tons of unnecessary showbiz crap news)

and I did said "and so on....." right?

Totally agree. Kita mo binoboto ng masa, mga artista. Kasi, sikat daw.

Yes it's entertainment but most masa are showbiz fanatics.

Better read a book, play a sport or surf the net than watch shows like Showtime.

Please don't make that generalization. They just weren't fortunate enough to finish high school because of poverty.

It was a sarcasm. But it also puzzles me na kung matalino sila, they could've attended public university.

We cannot just discount formal education into one's intellect level.
