Alien 5: Neill Blomkamp sequel officially greenlit

It's definite: we're getting Alien 5, and we're getting Prometheus 2...
Well, crikey. At the start of the year, when District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp posted some Alien sequel concept art via his social media channels, the general assumption was that this was a dead project. That he was sharing materials for something he developed, that never happened.

Who would have thought that, less than two months later, we'd be talking about a new, official Alien sequel?

But that's what's happening. Blomkamp took to his Instagram account to post a picture of the xenomorph (which is the image you can see above), with the sentence "Um... So I think it's officially my next film [#]alien[/#]".

As the internet began to melt, it didn't take long for 20th Century Fox to clarify this.

It has since confirmed that Blomkamp's project is an official sequel (not prequel) in the Alien series. What's unconfirmed thus far is whether - as the director had been hinting - Sigourney Weaver would return to play Ripley. But it's no secret that she's aware of the idea, and had been working with Blomkamp on Chappie, which arrives in cinemas next month.

Furthermore, it's also been confirmed that this doesn't replace Prometheus 2, which is still happening, and is still set for release on March 4th 2016

Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Film is a Sequel to ‘Aliens’

In an interview with Sky News, both Blomkamp and Weaver seemed privy to the concept of giving Ripley a “proper finish,” as the actress called it. In Blomkamp’s mind, that involves imagining that both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection never happened and instead choosing to follow the footsteps of James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens.

    Here’s Blomkamp’s quote:

“I want this film to feel like it’s literally the genetic sibling of ‘Aliens.’ So it’s ‘Alien,’ ‘Aliens,’ and then this movie.”
