“BET ON YOUR BABY” OFFERS FULLY LOADED FUN FOR ITS LAST WEEK

“Bet on Your Baby,” the cutest game show in the country that became a phenomenal hit, hitting an all-time high in TV viewership nationwide, is ready to say goodbye for now with a bang and tons of fun for its last week on ABS-CBN starting this February 2 (Monday).

The top-rating show, hosted by Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, has changed a lot of lives and has been an inspiring show for Filipino families for almost two years. Because of its grand prizes, exciting games, and the moving stories of the contestants, “Bet on Your Baby” has been a well-loved show in the Kapamilya network.

Set originally as a weekly program for 13 weeks, “Bet on Your Baby” was extended countless times until it became a daily show because of its high ratings that led to more families getting the chance to have their “Bet on Your Baby” experience and giving more prizes to families who qualify in the thrilling “Basagin ang Baboy” segment.

For its last week starting this Monday (February 2), the show will feature families of overseas Filipino workers. Even “Bet on Your Baby’s” host Judy Ann shares that having an OFW parent is no piece of cake. It can be recalled that Judy Ann’s mother was once an OFW in Canada.

Will the finale week of “Bet on Your Baby” end with a family going home with Php1 million or a brand new house and lot?

Find out by watching the last week of “Bet on Your Baby” every day at 5PM on ABS-CBN.

Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo is also highly entertaining – thanks to a very good material and dialogues that are crisp but real (every day spoken language – nothing phony). What make this Jose Javier Reyes film even more successful are the spectacular performances of the cast members: Judy Ann Santos (unbeatable in the best actress competition), Ryan Agoncillo (a natural actor, who has great on screen chemistry with Judy Ann), Gina Pareño (a strong bet for best supporting actress), Ariel Ureta and Tuesday Vargas.

    24. Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, 2007, Joey Reyes. The movie that beat the usual “winners” in the Metro Manila Film Festival. Defying box-office traditions that favored mixed genres like fantasy, adventure, horror and slapstick comedy, it offered a fresh alternative — a domestic comedy-drama that confirms that in this country, one does not only marry a man or a woman but an entire family. The film was rewarded with record-breaking attendance and several trophies. Has a great cast headed by Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo.

As with last year's work, Santos and Agoncillo, as Angie and Jed, respectively, in this year's opus on marriage Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo, prove to be the right fulcrum on which rests the sensibility and sensitivity of this story. They look natural, but at the same time, for some reason only they as performers know, manage to present out-of-the ordinary characterizations. Credit should be given to the two leads for pulling the story away from the pit of camp and gay sensibility, which can be tiring and predictable. Surrounded by character actors like Gina Pareño, Tuesday Vargas and the characters playing the housemaids, Santos and Agoncillo miraculously come out of their presentations unscathed. The two never play their role for laughs-or for tears. We have a name for this: maturity.

Aside from the most bankable romantic tandem (and real-life sweethearts) Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo in lead roles, this formula film Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo works for a true box office favor because of being what it is – no much pretentions and only true to its kind of cheesy humor and mushy Pinoy melodrama. Naturally funny as it is, it doesn’t try hard to make the audience laugh. It just goes on providing an escapist comedy route in a light, natural, and honest way and not as an artsy fartsy endeavor – somehow reflecting how the production team probably enjoyed the light and fun scenes way back filming time.

Unlike ‘Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo,’ there is a lack of a coherent story in this sequel. If the first installment follows Angie and Jed’s road to their wedding, this film merely shows random events in their lives and the people around them – merely organizing these random events into three chapters. Nevertheless, it works on its own mainstream level as it captures the craziness of married life and extended families. And clearly, it works the way it is meant to make the people, particularly the Juday-Ryan fans, happy to see their favorite celebrity icons on the big screen.

Hats off to Topel for brilliantly casting against type. Iza plays funny woman in the shafts of humor that permeate the film. Staring dumbfounded with cigarette in mouth and peeping when they all should be keeping their eyes shut are two wonderful examples of how Topel creatively utilizes Iza’s serious mien. Similarly, Judy Ann plays the brittle, bitter elder stepsister of Jolina, never having gotten over how their father deserted their mother. Cameos by particular personalities pepper the film, adding to our enjoyment. Editing is especially brisk and works in Topel’s favor.

I particularly like how, in the middle of the film Ouija, he jumps from Judy Ann to Jolina and to Iza, and sequentially and repeatedly back again, building up the tension like a puppet master.

    Rito Asilo
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    July 2007

Director Topel Lee effectively shows off an astute aptitude for scaring his audience: Initially, he carefully establishes the appropriate mood and atmosphere of a scene before he rushes in for the kill, then, he pulls no punches and doesn’t let up until his viewers cower along with the next unfortunate victim on the screen in Ouija.

Another plus point comes from the solid camera work of cinematographer, Neil Daza, whose eye for detail and spatial perspective greatly enhances the story’s chills and thrills. In the peerless lens of Daza’s camera, Judy Ann and company are at their loveliest!

Moreover, the eerie beauty and mystery of a sunken cemetery are wisely put to good use.

On point of performance, the consistently reliable Judy Ann acquits herself credibly in her I’m-a-tough-lady role, but the seasoned actress has been playing this role in many of her recent starrers, so the character is not much of a stretch for her -- except for her vocal chords, perhaps?

From the very outset, the film starts with a bang, the road accident leads to some disturbing scenes at the hospital, and like a tightly wound screw, Lana piles up a brisk sequence of false alarms, foreshadowing and creepy incidents that had the audience in the palm of his hand. Halfway through the film, the aforementioned dark family secret of Mira rears its head, and it provides a wonderful opportunity for Judy Ann to show why this is the fifth film in a row that she has been involved in a film that has garnered an A rating (Kasal, Ouija, Sakal, Ploning and now Kulam). Naturally, the secret has much to do with the curse that has befallen Mira, and has affected the whole family. Dennis plays his role to the hilt, there at the side of Mira and trying to make up for past transgressions. Sensitive and forceful when needed, the only thing that I couldn’t understand was why the script called for him to be constantly shifting to English, when all around him characters were speaking in straight Tagalog (Tag-lish means sosyal seems such a poor reason).

A new Judy Ann Santos is seen on this film. Primarily, she had to learn the Cuyonon dialect as the film is shot 60 percent in Filipino and 40 percent in Cuyonon. And more than just being one of the most bankable stars doing commercial projects in her era – turning the lamest mainstream movies into box office hits with her charm, stature, and popularity – this film requires her to communicate her emotions through her eyes and actions only as compared to the usual predictable run of the cash cow plots of her mainstream projects (where the major selling point is having the most crying and shouting scenes as possible). For “Ploning,” instead of seeing the famous drama star bawl her eyes out, she doesn’t smile or talk too much. With this, the film strikes a minimal physical breakdown to become the most tearjerking moment. And this time, Santos generally gets a hand in the characterization of her role without the usual requirement for a leading man who is ultimately present in her commercial films. This film draws attention to her character as she moves, talks, and laughs reservedly, yet she captivates everyone around her. She becomes a tie that binds all of the individual stories together by becoming the barrios’s ‘Nay Ploning amidst her infinite waiting for the love of her life, Tomas.

    MORE PLAUDITS FOR PLONING

""Ploning" is a masterpiece... Lead actress Judy Ann Santos has no leading man and no melodramatic scene but she manages to come with a sympathetic three-dimensional character never before seen in a Pinoy-made movie..." - Edgar Cruz, Yehey.Com

"...like a great classical music opus, it is a dense work of art, one that requires one's full attention and patience, but one that ultimately rewards the viewer who makes the effort." - Philip Cu-Unjieng, Philippine Star

"...Moving, dazzling, and yet intimate and comforting, "Ploning" is a worthy tribute to small-town life and mores, to women of heart and bravery, and to filmmakers of courage and integrity. Judy Ann is lucky to have found a friend in "Ga," for no one could have gotten a better birthday gift." - Rina Jimenez-David, Philippine Daily Inquirer

""Ploning" is a living proof that there's still hope for the dying if not dead film industry in the country." - Michael Kho Lim, Daily Tribune

"I say go watch what might be one of Philippine cinema's best creations to date. I will not go into detail what "Ploning" is about. No one can ever capture the purity of its beauty into words. Only the viewer's heart is able to do that." - Marian Joy Hernandez, ClicktheCity.Com

"There are many things to like about Dante Nico Garcia's first feature film, "Ploning": Its loving tribute to small-town life, folk tradition and timeless tenets; its textured characters, each with an affecting story to tell; its private locales; its actors' deeply-felt performances; and its shared insights about the different forms of love that bind people to each other..." - Nestor Torre, Philippine Daily Inquirer

"...it surely has its own rewards for the sensitive, thinking viewer as it's the type of film that grows on you." - Mario Bautista, People's Journal

"...What the character significantly manages to hold on to inside Ploning is one scarred mystery intelligibly shaping two gripping storylines crossing boundaries, a fascinating treatment typical of Pedro Almodovar or Atom Egoyan's edgy dramas." - Edsel Lorete, Daily Tribune

""Ploning" does a great job of showing off Cuyo, Palawan. Shots of beautiful sunsets and rough beaches will entice audiences to head to the island and experience the quiet rural life themselves. The colors on "Ploning" are also vibrant; they pop off the screen and make you lean forward." - Sam Marcelo, Business World

"No matter the box-office results (masterpieces rarely make money), "Ploning" is already a winner in terms of artistry and technical quality of the cast and the cinematography of Charlie Peralta and the story and script penned by direk Nico in collaboration with Benjamin Lingan." - Ronald Constantino, Tempo

""Sabel" may have been the turning point of Judy Ann's acting career. But here in "Ploning," she finally reaches maturity as an actress. As moviegoers, we should also mature with her and appreciate this simple, yet masterfully done work of art on film." - Butch Francisco, Philippine Star

"The movie's impressive cast brings their characters' disparate stories to pulsating life: With unflinching conviction and focus, Santos turns in an insightful and nuanced performance-with able support from Dizon, Mabesa and Domingo." - Rito Asilo, Philippine Daily Inquirer

"Impressively done. Ingeniously crafted. Intelligently executed. - Cinema Evaluation Board

"Isang napakagandang pelikula ang Ploning na bihira nang makita sa mga klase ng pelikula natin ngayon." - Catholic Bishops Council of the Philippines

"A story about the life of a woman named Ploning, filled with love and devotion for loved ones. It contains cultural scenes and good scenery. Approved for general audience." - MTRCB

At the core of this film as memory is Judy Ann Santos as Ploning. It is an achingly beautiful performance. As the woman described as someone who makes people forget the absence of rains, Santos as Ploning justifies that hyperbole for everything about her in this film is grand and sweeping. Walking across town and holding out her hand for the young boys to kiss in respect, talking to a lovestruck young man and consoling him with an invitation to dance, standing at the door with her face drenched in tears as she listens to her father talk about forgiveness, Santos compels us to remember her character in a film that has what Pablo Neruda calls "the sumptuous appeal of the tactile." Which is good for a film that is about things that are gone and those that have not still come around.

I fully understand now why the Best Actress/Supporting Actress awards were given that way. All four of these actresses acted as a perfect ensemble in Mga Mumunting Lihim with each other. Although we can feel that Judy Ann and Iza had more central roles, the more peripheral roles of Agot and Janice all had their own turns to shine. I guess the reason why they had to make this film independently is because of its very serious and morose storyline. No all-star cast can make this story like this a commercial success that a mainstream producer wants. But I guess it also because of this famous cast that caused this film to be the first to be chosen for a commercial run from among the Cinemalaya films this year.

The direction and storytelling of Joey Reyes tend to be melodramatic. The four actresses can really turn on their waterworks to make the audience do the same. There were also some funny (albeit unrealistic) confrontation scenes where the girls turn on their *****y modes. I was just distracted a bit by continuity problems by which diary Carly was reading with the sequence of events. I also do not really know why Reyes reused complete scenes at different parts of the film with unclear intention. There seemed to be no dramatic purpose for replaying these scenes at all.

I thought this film could have been more effective as a short film than a full length film like this. At almost two hours in length, the sad basic story simply got pulled out too long. However, its stellar cast still makes this film worth your time. They are really the best part of this film, and despite the unusual presentation, their awards are most well-deserved, and reason enough to check this indie film out.

The film Mga Mumunting Lihim starts with the death of one of the girls. We don’t want to give away so much of the plot, but the film then becomes more like a horror story when she then veritably returns from the dead to haunt her three remaining friends through the diaries she left behind. This unleashes an emotional tsunami since they’re all exposed as gossiping backstabbers. Really, with friends like them, who needs enemies? It shows that it really takes a lot of patience and forgiving and forgetting to nurture and keep a friend over the long haul of a lifetime.

Vastly entertaining and both hilarious and tragic, we’re at first bothered by the fact that Judy Ann Santos, Agot Isidro, Janice de Belen and Iza Calzado don’t really belong to the same age bracket. But as you watch them interact on screen, you’ll easily forget this as there’s warm and even palpable chemistry between them in all their scenes together. They make you want to suddenly call friends you’ve not seen in years just to keep in touch again.

Even if it’s Iza Calzado who gets the longest screen exposure since it’s mainly from her point of view that the story unfolds, all the actresses here deserve to win best actress trophies as they all have their own big acting highlights. In Tagalog, “wala kaming itulak-kabigin sa kanila” as they can all both be wickedly funny and tenderly touching. Maybe they should just win for ensemble acting as they’re all outstanding. Giving the award to just one of them will be an injustice to the other three.

Of all the entries in the horror fest, T’yanak truly frightens and it is to the credit of the filmmakers that they made sure it has what it takes to suspend disbelief in this nearly forgotten monster in Philippine folklore.

Apart from superb direction, T’yanak has good cinematography and an astounding film scoring by Tom Vinoya.

For another, the directors were able to extract the best from the performances of Santos, Rodriguez and Heussaff, among others.

As it is, T’yanak is an example of an output of a good creative team not daunted by time and budget constraints.

The titular monster is powerful not because it can kill people, but because it comes in the guise of an innocent child. And the film really builds its plot around that, the characters taking a journey into the darkness as they are forced to consider the killing of what appears to be a baby. This arc is made all the more compelling by the various conflicts being played out within this community. The screenplay quickly establishes the dynamics of these characters, the history between each of them laid out in fairly elegant fashion. The film feels situated in this locale, the interactions between the various sectors feeling grounded and familiar.

The production wisely uses digital effects sparingly. The T’yanak itself isn’t the most sophisticated effect, but it feels just right. The film often has to shoot around the monster to make its attacks look credible, but it all looks okay. Judy Ann Santos is key to the film’s appeal. As Julie, she makes the obsession clear, but she never makes it feel unreasonable. She conveys a history of pain and loneliness that makes her choices understandable if not completely sane. Solenn Heussaff plays the outsider well, the actress serving as a fine surrogate for the audience.

T’yanak is just a perfect little movie. Gallaga and Reyes step up their technical game, delivering a series of really impressive sequences. But it all comes down to the drama. The film embraces the B-movie sensibilities and then elevates all that to a really emotional place. It just treats the monster so seriously, carefully considering the emotions that might be involved in dealing with such a threat. As silly as it might seem in your head, the film just presses on and builds to something genuinely affecting by the end.

Directors Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes impressed with Judy Ann Santos' performance in T'yanak: “Hayop! Unbelievable!”
    By Rommel Gonzales
    10/20/14 09:59 am

“I think this is good for every director who’s an artist. I think any serious director always brings everything plus to his project.

“For a long time, Lore [Reyes] and I have been doing a lot of Filipino horror films that we’re very proud of because we try to go back to kung ano yung Filipino folklore," aniya.

“The tiyanak, the manananggal, the aswang, the shape-shifter, the tikbalang.

“And we got to the point na we’re very serious about it, na the monsters are not evil.

“They’re another species, probably an older species than human beings, and in fact this is very strong with the Telang Bayawak scene [in T’yanak] na para silang mga, they’re predators.

“They’re sharks, they kill in order to eat, in order to live, like we kill animals in order to eat and live.

“That’s become very, very strong in our movies.

“In fact, our last horror movie was Sa Piling ng mga Aswang where Maricel Soriano and Gina Alajar will meet as human being and aswang and she returns the baby aswang.

“So that’s the plus that we really mean, in other words we don’t create a monster just to destroy it.

“And I want to just let everybody know that our ending in the movie with Juday is super-plus. Amazing!”

Dagdag pa ni Direk Peque, “Actually more! Because we were building on the 'anak ni Janice,' so the story is talagang anak ni Juday. In fact, we were thinking of the tagline, 'OMG! Anak ni Juday!'

“Pero sabi ko let’s not go there, nandun na sa istorya.

“It really becomes anak ni Juday!”

“Amazing! Hindi ko ini-expect, we were really surprised.

“She brought something to the script na Lore and I planned everything sa umpisa and we didn’t expect to go there,” pagpuri ng multi-awarded director.

“I have no idea. Tiyanak... was such a big hit, Mother didn’t tell us.

“So wala kaming bonus, wala kaming trip sa Hong Kong.

“It was that big,” at tumawa si Direk Peque.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD HORROR FLICK?

Detalye niyang paliwanag, “When the people are really, really, really emotionally invested in the character, not in the monster. If you want the character to live, if you want the character to survive.

“Iyon ang pinaka-effective para sa akin.

“And number two, I hate 'shock' horror movies na palagi na lang 'Wah!'

    “Yung nanggugulat lang sa sound.

“Tumatakbo siya, lumalakad lang yung monster and then nandito na siya. Parang ano ba 'yan... cheating. Yung hindi iniiisip.

“Sa akin yung pinaka-effective na horror, hanep sa logic! Grabe yung logic. So alam mo, even the audience knows, ‘Ito'ng mangyayari, e. Dapat ito ang mangyayari, e.’

“And then if something else happens, puwede rin. Hindi yung ang daming cheating. It’s so easy, e. It’s like pulling a chair from somebody who’s going to sit down; that’s not funny.

“Yung shock, that’s not good horror. Puwede once in a while pero kung ganun yung pelikula mo, cheating, cheater ka.”

“Which is what we are attempting. Sabihin niyo sa amin kung nagtagumpay kami,” at tumawa si Direk Lore.

Ito raw ang ginawa nila sa T’yanak.

“Kasi iyan ang sinubukan naming gawin e, mag-emphatize kayo dun sa 'This is a bad baby, but this is a baby.'”

“Ang dami pero my favorite is the The Innocents with Deborah Kerr, iyon ang nakakatakot,” sabi naman ni Direk Peque.

HORROR FILMS AS ENTERTAINMENT.

“I’ll give the communist answer. Kailangan natin ng entertainment dahil ang hirap ng p– inang buhay!

“And it is one of the best ways to be entertained, it makes us forget our problems.

“Okay! That’s the standard communist answer,” bulalas ni Direk Lore.

“And not only that, we live in a horror world,” salo naman ni Direk Peque.

“The political situation is horrific, it’s horrific!

“Wala kang magawa, you feel helpless, which is a horror film in itself. At saka you cannot do anything about it.”

PINOY FOLKLORE.

“That’s our culture and culture is a portrait of who we are.

“So even if it’s not true, do you believe in tikbalang or anything? But that’s what we grew up with.”

Ayon pa kay Direk Lore, “That’s our ultimate aim—gusto naming ubusin talaga yung mga available na folklore na ano, lahat!

“One day, we’ll finish all of them.”

Pagsang-ayon naman ni Direk Peque, “In fact one of our ambitions, we did four Shake Rattle & Roll movies, palagay na lang sa each SRR na ginagawa namin, may comedy, may traditional story, one based on a true story, and then one we created a Filipino mythology, na the people accepted.

“Yung Undin, yung Witawit... people thought those are real Filipino [beings]. We invented those.”

DIFFERENCES.

    “Very different, very different.

“Ang kay Janice, and that’s not Janice’s limitation, that was our limitation, we just saw her as the mother of the tiyanak.

“Si Juday here is mataray! Mataray because she’s working with guilt. Yun ang dinala ni Judy Ann which we didn’t think of.

“Na in other words, after a while, she’s beginning to believe that the baby that she’s protecting is guilty of all these things, so denial siya, denial, denial.

“So she stars to fight for the baby.

“Iyon ang iba dito. Iyon ang iba,” paliwanag ni Direk Peque.

IMPRESSED WITH JUDAY.

[It was the] first time we worked with her so hindi naman namin alam na ganun siya kalakas.

“Eight [shooting] days lang namin siyang nakasama pero nung nakatodo siya talaga dun sa mga drama [scenes], para kang nanonood ng theater na live.”

Bilang pagsang-ayon, nagkuwento naman si Direk Peque.

Aniya, “Ganito yun. We had a [script] reading. Sa busy-busy nila, we had a reading in the house.

“When we were talking there, first time no, and believe me, I’m nervous about talking to talented people!

“Sabi ko, ‘Juday, we have to plan this because there are about eight to 10 sequences na iiyak ka! Let’s not turn this into a telenovela.

“We have to choose kung saan tayo. Where are we gonna have the crying points? This is going to become mabigat, sobra!’

    “Sabi niya, ‘Yeah, okay, okay.’

“First shooting day pa lang, wala sa eksena na may iyakan, she’s just opening the nursery 'cause she's expecting a baby.

“Wala yung baby, she’s opening the crib, kinuha niya yung sapatos, then she kissed the small baby shoes, then she laughed, yung parang, ‘May baby na ako!’

    “And then umiyak!

“I said, ‘P— ina wala yun sa script! Anong ginagawa niya?’

“After that we decided, let’s stop directing her, let’s trust her.

    “Let’s trust her.

    “Iba siya!

“When she cries, it’s really, really, I hate to use the word logical, pero logical. You know it’s coming from something real.

“And you won’t expect the ending.”

Pa-ending na at magsi-season break ang Bet On Your Baby this week.
