    Ayon dito, possibly.

    http://cebu.sunstar.com.ph/sinulog/history/

    Excerpts:

Historians say that Sinulog is the link between the country’s pagan past and its Christian present.

Historical accounts say before Portuguese navigator came to Cebu on April 7, 1521 to plant the cross on its shore and claim the country for the King of Spain, Sinulog was already danced by the natives in honor of their wooden idols and anitos.

Historians now say that during the 44 years between the coming of Magellan and Legaspi, the natives continued to dance the Sinulog. This time, however, they danced it no longer to worship their native idols but as a sign of reverence to the Santo Niño which is now enshrined at the San Agustin Church (renamed Basilica Minore del Santo Niño).

Just to be clear, however, the pagan practice was just the dance, and not the festival. The same link also mentions that the festival itself was only started in 1980, but only took on its present form in 1981. By then, the festival itself was specifically held in honor of the Christ Child.

  • agree,

so, the Roman Catholics do have practices that are pagan in origin in their faith?

parang iba yung sinabi ng mga apologists dito a?

veneration of idols is almost similar to worshipping anitos.

First of all, let us be clear about what the Sinulog Festival is, and what it is not.

If you want to fixate on the dance part, which is the pagan ritual, then you are just talking about the Sinulog Grand Parade. That is actually organized by a Sinulog Working Committee, and is headed by private individuals with some oversight/coordination with the city government. In that sense, while it is religious in nature, you can treat it as a distinct cultural event.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu has its own activities during the said festival, and these are incorporated into the official calendar of activities.

So, no, the religious celebrations are not pagan in origin. The cultural Sinulog Dance Parade is. Happy? :glee: Guess not.

wonder how the early saints and the apostles would react to that. :/

and iirc, one of you guys (forgot it if it was totny or elcid) asserted that ALL christian practices have no pagan roots.

Research ka ng philippine prehistory para maintindihan mo na ang mga pilipino ay naturally paganistic.

^that is out of the question, I am fully aware of that.
the gist of the problem is whether Roman Catholics did or did not take pagan rituals and converted them to christianic rituals.

Rome was pagan before Christianity. And it adapted Christianity and infused its naturally pagan self to the religion.

This is why Filipinos accepted Roman flavored Christianity because of its paganistic elements.

Are you saying that the culprit are the natives and not the religion?

Both ways. Catholicism has pagan elements and we Filipinos are inclined to be pagans. Parang perfect fit.

What do the apostles and the Lord Jesus Christ say about pagan (gentile) practices?

Solution to that - Traditions over the Bible. What is deemed traditional (Paganistic Rome) can be easily infused to the religion in the name of Church Tradition.

You can not just remove the paganistic inclination of the Romans overnight after adapting a Middle Eastern religion. Syncretism is what happened.
