Schools pay up to P50,000 to lure players during recruitment, says veteran coach
by Kathy Catipay on September 30, 2014
MANILA Senior University of Santo Tomas volleyball coach Emil Lontoc admitted that recruitment in the UAAP has become difficult as competition nowadays offer financial incentives to potential recruits.
The venerable mentor, who in the past years had taken a back seat role in USTs volleyball program, however was glad that he was able to lure Cebuana duo Rica Rivera and Cherry Rondina to España.
Despite their young age, the rookies were able to bag the UAAP Womens Beach Volleyball title, beating out veteran teams like Adamson University, De La Salle University and Far Eastern University.
Lontoc shared to Rivals that he was thankful to his former players who helped in bringing the two to UST.
Personally, kilala nila ako at may mga former players ako sa national team na nagpatulong ako (sa recruitment), the experienced coach said.
Lontoc shared to Rivals that other schools were willing to pay just so newly crowned UAAP beach volleyball MVP Cherry Rondina would go to them.
Actually binabayaran talaga. Binibigyan ng ₱50,000, ₱30,000 yung player, he said. Binabayaran nila kasi nakita nila, potential eh.
(Pero kami) Wala kaming binigay. Ang sabi ko lang sa kanya, Pag pumasok ka sa amin, hindi ka magsisisi,' Lontoc added.
Adding also to the opportunity to train under Lontoc, his former players also persuaded the Cebuana.
Kasi sinabihan sila ng mga players ko sa Cebu na, Naging coach ko yan sa Philippine team. Nakilala ko na yan, diyan na kayo sumama.'
In the end, Rondina chose to go to UST, telling Lontoc that she made the right choice.
Nakita niya at sinabi niya na, O coach, di kami nagkamali.'
