Giving the earliest artifact is not acceptable, you should give an earliest indication, a quote from early christians that images are ok to venerate.

St. Luke the evangelist was a painter, traditions hold that he painted mary holding baby jesus

He is said to have painted pictures of the Virgin Mary and Child, in particular the Hodegetria image in Constantinople (now lost).

Since the Old Testament pa may mga images sa temples.

    Catacomb of Priscilla

1 Kings 8:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubim.

Early christians were thought to be worshippers of the cross, they were misconstrued as worshipping a piece of wood, where in fact early christians were just venerating a symbol of christ's passion.

I have plenty of crosses at home, I have crosses on by daughter's test papers. I have crosses on every window on my desktop.

c'mon, I am talking about pictures, images, and then later on we can discuss about early churches' aniconism and then byzantine iconoclasm.

The point is from the outside they were thought to be worshippers of the cross, but from the inside it was just veneration towards the cross. That was history.
