Breaking News: Supergirl's Getting a TV Show

Looks like the Man of Steel isn’t the only Kryptonian you’ll soon be seeing on screen. Yes, the news of its development broke a few weeks ago, but today it was made official. As reported this morning , Berlanti Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television, will be producing a Supergirl television series for CBS, which has given the show a series commitment. If the Berlanti name sounds familiar to you, it should. It’s the production company of Greg Berlanti, the Executive Producer of both Arrow and the upcoming The Flash. He’ll serve as Executive Producer of Supergirl as well, along with Ali Adler and Sarah Schechter. As for what fans can expect from the show, it sounds like Berlanti and team will be keeping pretty faithful to the comics:

Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor el escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

If it's from Greg Berlanti, expect a cross-over with The Flash and Arrow

CBS is the "C" of "The CW"

Cross promotion across networks, even if they are sister networks, are difficult to pull off. Tying Supergirl with the Arrow-Flash universe would mean having to bring in anyone from the Superman mythos as well, including Clark Kent/Superman himself. DC will likely not see the need to do that and I doubt Greg Berlanti will entertain the idea as well.

But we're all getting ahead of ourselves. Lots of things can happen and even with a series commitment, CBS will easily shelve it if the presented pilot alone next spring doesn't turn out the way CBS was hoping creatively.

So are they going with the costumed heroine (a la Flash) or a teen/angsty/emo character (a la Smallville)?

Well, Deadline reports that it's getting an even bigger commitment from CBS than Gotham did from Fox. Looks like the network really wants to push it, so let's wait. Si Greg Berlanti naman, he's already the exec.producer of Arrow and The Flash, so if there's going to be a crossover of DC characters across the three shows, and CBS is CW's parent company, so mas madali siguro. And judging how Berlanti's been working out Arrow and The Flash, may hint na tayo kung anong treatment gagawin sa Supergirl. Pero ewan.

Probably more procedural-esque with secondary emphasis on serialized stories like the way they did before with Ghost Whisperer and in past sci-fi/fantasy shows CBS had before like John Wesley Shipp's The Flash and BATB that starred Linda Hamilton.

That's the only way it could resonate with CBS's traditionally older audiences.

Agree! Baka ma-Wonder Woman ito (NBC) :naughty:
While CBS is doing well both in viewers and adults demo, I think it's about time that they join the bandwagon since sila na lang ang lone nework without superheroe/s sa programming nila.

    ----

As for the cross-overs, I think it varies, hindi naman uso ang network wars sa US, dito lang sa pinas super ang mga fans, sabayan ng asido, babuyan ng fans [#]chos[/#]!

On a serious note, I think hindi issue ang network kung sakali mang may cross-over but it's more of the "Studio" kung saan contracted ang stars, since they are tied with the production house/studio (warners bros.; abc studios, cbs studios, 20th century fox, etc) and not with the network.

I recalled Laura Vandervoort was able to appear on both Smallville (The CW) and V (ABC) oh I miss V... because both shows were produced by Warner Bros. so walang issue sa contract.

Early Edition and Martial Lawn, nagkaron din ng cross-over thought half-half si CBS Studios / FOx Studios but both airing sa CBS so it's really depends on their contract sa production house and not to mention that these actors can freely promote their shows sa kahit anong cable or basic channel :)

but at the end of the day, sana hindi hiccups itong supergirl, though im not really a fan of her :naughty:

Angel and Buffy had difficulty crossing over with each other's shows since the latter moved to UPN from The WB in 2001. We'll see how that happens if GB plans to tie Supergirl (if ordered to series) with the Flash/Arrow universe.

‘Supergirl’ TV Cast Includes Famous ‘Superman’ Comic Characters

Recently, casting on Supergirl has begun and character descriptions of both Kara and her foster sister, Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, were released. Now, the casting descriptions of four more characters have been revealed – all of which fans of Superman will recognize.

CAT GRANT | The project is eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as “J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour.”

JAMES OLSEN | In his late 20s/early 30s, open ethnicity, James is a smart, worldly and (duh) attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.

WINSLOW ‘WYNN’ SCHOTT | This twentysomething tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own (toying?) potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to.

HANK HENSHAW | As an upstart CIA agent, Hank grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.

In the pre-New 52 comic book continuity, Hank Henshaw was originally a Mr. Fantastic analog that eventually became the Cyborg Superman, a villain with a robotic body designed with Kryptonian technology. However, in DC’s New 52, Henshaw is simply a scientist, so it’s unclear whether or not the Henshaw on Supergirl will in fact become Cyborg Superman (or something akin to Cyborg Superman).

dditionally, the other characters are recognizable from DC comics. Winslow Schott becomes Toyman, a villain known for creating dangerous toy-like gadgets. Jimmy Olsen is a friend of Superman’s and works alongside Clark Kent at the Daily Planet (often as a photographer). Cat Grant also works at the Planet as a gossip columnist – it’s not a far jump to a media conglomerate.

Although fans of DC may have a good idea of who each of these Supergirl characters will be based on their comic book iterations, Berlanti may not be above the use of red herrings. In the pilot of The Flash, a character resembling Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash as well as a character with the name Thawne were introduced; however, the show has given no inclination that these two characters are linked in the way they are in the comics (though it may be too early to say for sure).
