Syrian rebels surrounded dozens of defiant Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights on Friday and demanded they give up their weapons, hours after taking 43 Fijian soldiers hostage, authorities said.

Seventy-five Filipino members of a United Nations peacekeeping force were defending two posts on the Syrian side of Golan Heights, and were prepared to fight back rather than surrender, their commander in Manila said.

"We can use deadly force in defence of the UN facilities," Colonel Roberto Ancan told reporters.

"I [would] just like to emphasise our troops are well-armed, they are well-trained … they are well-disciplined warrior peacekeepers."

Syrian rebels, including fighters from the al-Qaida affiliate al-Nusra Front, stormed a Golan Heights crossing at Quneitra on Wednesday, sparking an exchange of gunfire with Israeli troops.

Quneitra is the only crossing between the Syrian- and the Israeli-controlled side of the strategic plateau.

The rebels captured 43 Fijian members of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on Thursday, forcing them to surrender their weapons then taking them hostage.

Ancan said the rebels then used an English-speaking Fijian hostage to relay their demand to the Filipino peacekeepers to give up their weapons.

The Fijian prime minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, said on Friday that talks were under way to release the hostages, and they were believed to be safe.

"I want to assure the families of the soldiers we are doing everything possible to secure their safe return," he said.

"The latest information we have is that they are safe and I can say now that the negotiations for their release have already begun."

Bainimarama said Fiji was "united as a nation in praying for their safe return".

The UN security council strongly condemned the assaults against the peacekeepers, which it said were carried out by "terrorist groups and by members of non-state armed groups".

The council demanded the "unconditional and immediate release of all the detained United Nations peacekeepers" and urged countries with influence to help win their release.

The Philippine military said the soldiers were occupying two UNDOF posts about 2.5 miles apart.

The United Nations initially said 81 Filipinos were involved in the stand-off. However, Ancan said there were 75.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said it was unclear which group had staged the attacks.

"Some groups are self-identified as affiliated to al-Nusra but we are not able to confirm," he said. However, the US state department said al-Nusra was definitely involved.

"The United States strongly condemns the detention of UN peacekeepers and ongoing violence targeting the UN Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights by non-state armed groups, including UN security council-designated terrorist group al-Nusra Front," US state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

The United States demanded the "unconditional and immediate release" of the Fijian peacekeepers, the statement said.

The UNDOF has been stationed in the buffer zone of the Golan Heights since 1974 to monitor a ceasefire between Syria and Israel.

Israel initially seized 460 square miles of the Golan Heights during the 1967 six-day war, then annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.

There are currently 1,200 peacekeepers from the Philippines, Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal and the Netherlands.

Since the Syrian war erupted in 2011, the plateau has been tense, with a growing number of mostly stray rockets and mortar rounds hitting the Israeli side, prompting occasional armed responses.

The Philippines, which has 331 troops serving in UNDOF, announced on Saturday that it would pull out of the peace force because of security concerns.

Filipino defence officials said no fresh troops would be sent once the current batch of soldiers had returned from duty in October.

Last year, the Philippines said it was considering pulling its Golan peacekeepers out after 25 of them were kidnapped but later freed by Syrian rebels in two separate incidents.

In assessing the latest crisis, UN officials noted the safe release of the Filipino peacekeepers last year.

The Philippine president, Benigno Aquino, described the situation in the Golan Heights as tense but also sought to calm fears about the fate of the Filipino troops.

"So far, we should not worry. The news is that the situation looks stable," he said.

Irish peacekeepers rescued Filipino troops in Golan Heights—report
    By Frances Mangosing
    INQUIRER.net
    11:42 pm, Saturday, August 30th, 2014

MANILA, Philippines—Irish peacekeepers have rescued Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights, according to an Irish publication.

The Irish forces serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force “managed to save the peacekeepers from a massacre by securing an escape route for the Filipinos near the Israeli-Syrian border,” said Irish Mirror in a story posted on Aug. 29, at 10:14 pm (around 5 am Manila time).

It has yet to be confirmed where these troops came from. There were 75 Filipino peacekeepers trapped at Positions 68 and 69 around that time.

On Friday afternoon (around 5 pm Manila time), the UN moved 58 troops to the UN Battalion Headquarters in Camp Faouar.

On Saturday morning (6 am Syrian time/11 am PH time), the rebels attacked a Filipino-manned position. Those in Position 69 were already extricated, the report said.

“Our brave soldiers managed to save the peacekeepers from a massacre by securing an escape route for the Filipinos near the Israeli-Syrian border,” the report said.

The same report quoted a spokesperson of Irish Defense Forces as saying that Irish personnel secured a route, provided security as Undof troops withdrew from a UN position and escorted them to the Force Headquarters in Camp Faouar.

On Thursday, Syrian rebels abducted Fijian peacekeepers after asking them to surrender their firearms to which they obliged.
They tried to do the same with Filipino peacekeepers but they resisted. There was a stand-off before the attack.

Manila (AFP) - All 75 Filipino troops serving as UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights are now safe after the last batch slipped away under cover of night from besieging Syrian rebels, military spokesmen said Sunday.

"Everyone is in a safe position. We left our (old) position but we brought all our arms," said Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala.

An initial group of 35 Filipino troops were picked up from their position by UN armoured vehicles on Saturday after Syrian rebels attacked their comrades positioned about four kilometres (two-and-a-half miles) away, said Zagala.

The remaining 40 soldiers engaged the Syrian rebels in a "seven-hour firefight", but later walked to safety to a UN position just over two kilometres away, he added.

They later moved to Camp Ziouani behind UN lines, he said.

"There is no more standoff. All are safe," Zagala told AFP.

The troops, burdened by their equipment and the cold weather, walked for about an hour and 40 minutes in the dark to reach safety, he said in Manila.

In a statement, Philippine military chief General Gregorio Catapang said the Syrian and Israeli governments had supported the Filipinos in upholding "the integrity of the area of separation".

He also credited the US and Qatar governments for helping safeguard the blue helmets but did not elaborate on their role.

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the United Nations will not compromise the safety and security of our troops while in the pursuit of their duties. It is in our national interest to prioritise their safety without abandoning our commitment to international security," he said.

The Filipino peacekeepers were besieged by rebels Thursday but defied demands that they give up their weapons.

Asked what the Filipino peacekeepers would do now, Zagala said "we continue our mission. Our commitment is still there".

On August 23, the Philippine Defence Department announced that it would withdraw the 331-strong Filipino contingent serving as part of the United Nations Disengagement Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights at the end of their tour of duty in October due to the worsening security situation.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Six-Day War, then annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.

The UN peacekeeping force has been stationed there since 1974 to monitor a ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

    Syrian Support Group

The Syrian Support Group (SSG) is a Washington,D.C.-based
non-governmental organization that was founded in
December 2011 in response to the actions of the Assad regime
in the Syrian civil war . A team of Syrian expatriates, led by
Ontario resident Louay Sakka, founded the SSG when they
came to the conclusion that armed revolution was necessary.
[1] The Syrian Support Group is the only organization legally
permitted by the U.S. government to provide support directly
to the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
    The Syrian Support Group
provides aid to select units of the FSA as determined by the
SSG's vetting procedure, conducted by its offices in Turkey,
which seeks to ensure those units' compliance with a set of
democratic principles and a lack of affiliation with extremist
groups such as the Al-Nusra Front . The Syrian Support Group
relies on private donations to support its operations.

On 23 July 2012, the U.S. Treasury Department 's Office of
Foreign Asset Control granted the organization its license to
fund the Free Syrian Army .[2] On Wednesday, 1 August 2012, a
Treasury Department official confirmed that they had given
Syrian Support Group this license. [2]
    The license requires that
the organization make monthly reports of their expenditures
to the U.S. Department of State . A copy of SSG's OFAC license
can be viewed in full here.

    1) Free Syrian Army (Composition: not really a single organization but composed of different groups of rebel factions with or without connection to each other. In other words, mga local warlord groups to na watak-watak at ang "Free Syrian Army" tag eh catch-all phrase lang na ginagamit ng western media para pabanguhin ang pangalan nila sa international audience. In 2012 and 2013, these local rebel groups disabowed the Syrian National Council, which is America's invention, to serve as the face of the Free Syrian Army in diplomatic circles. In 2013, more than half of the factions comprising Free Syrian Army joined the Islamic Front. Goal to overthrow Assad. What is their post-Assad agenda? we don't know because they are so divided. The western media presents them as "moderate" and secular but in reality, these are local gangs composed mostly of Sunni Arab Islamists. If Assad falls, they have no strength to take over Syria, most likely the local gangs would join bigger Islamist factions like Jabhat Al Nusra and ISIS. Current Strength they are the weakest of the groups fighting in Syria. Although they are receiving weapons and training from the United States, their ranks are dwindling and fighters are defecting to ISIS already. They are currently in alliance with Islamic Front and Jabhat Al Nusra. Location in the Golan heights, near Lebanese and Israel border, certain pockets near damascus, in Aleppo near the border of Turkey. Alliances Free Syrian Army has existing alliances with Jabhat Al Nusra and Islamic Front. It used to have an alliance with ISIS but broke it off when ISIS established the Caliphate.)

    2) Jabhat Al Nusra ( AlQaeda in Syria. Goal is to overthrow Assad and establish a Sunni Islamist government/emirate in Syria. Its fighters are composed of jihadists both foreign meaning from all over the Moslem world and local. If Assad falls, they will massacre the Shiites, Alawites and other minority groups in Syria which they consider as apostates. This is based on teachings of Mohammad. Christians would probably be given the option to convert or to pay special tax for being non-Sunni Muslims. They would then establish a border with Israel and support jihad in Palestine through that border. But most likely they will be destroyed by ISIS. Current Strength slightly stronger than the Free Syrian Army. It benefits from the weapons and aid provided by the West to the Free Syrian Army because of its alliance to the latter. they are the main group which attacked the Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights.Location in the Golan heights, near Lebanese and Israel border, certain pockets near damascus, in Aleppo near the border of Turkey. They are currently attacking and besieging a Christian town in Mahardeh near the city of Hama and promised to kill all Christians for not submitting to their authority.Alliances Jabhat Al Nusra has existing alliances with Free Syrian Army and Islamic Front. It used to have an alliance with ISIS but broke it off when ISIS refused to submit to the authority of Al Zawahiri, Bin Laden's successor and established the Caliphate.)

    3) Islamic Front (Saudi Arabia's puppet army in Syria Goal is to overthrow Assad and establish a Sunni Islamist government/emirate in Syria. Its fighters are composed of former Free Syrian Army fighters and Egyptian and Saudi Arabian fighters sponsored by Saudi Arabia. If Assad falls, they might massacre the Shiites, Alawites and other minority groups in Syria which they consider as apostates. Christians might also be given the option to convert or to pay special tax for being non-Sunni Muslims. They will not harass Israel through the Golan Heights because Saudi Arabia is cool with Israel. But most likely they will be destroyed by ISIS Current Strength Around the same strength as Jabhat Al Nusra. It benefits from the weapons and aid provided by the West to the Free Syrian Army because of its alliance to the latter. It also benefits from Saudi aid. Location in the Golan heights, near Lebanese and Israel border, certain pockets near damascus, in Aleppo near the border of Turkey. Alliances Islamic Front has existing alliances with Free Syrian Army and Jabhat Al Nusra. Might or might not have allied in the past with ISIS.)

    4) ISIS (It used to be Al Qaeda in Iraq. Now it is known as the Caliphate or the Islamic State. Goal is to overthrow not just Assad but all governments of Sunni Muslim countries and establish itself as the continuation of the Ottoman Turks Caliphate which used to have dominion over the Muslim world. Its fighters are composed of former foreign jihadist fighters and is now swelling with fresh recruits from Sunni Arab locals from Iraq and Syria. fighters from the Free Syrian Army, Jabhat Al Nusra and Islamic Front are also defecting to ISIS, because lets face it, all rebels in Syria are Islamists. There are very few secular rebels, and the reason they rebelled against Assad is not to established democracy as the western media would like us to believe but rather to overthrow the secular Alawite government and replace it with a Sunni Islamic regime. If Assad falls, they are most likely the ones who would control Syria. they will destroy all the other rebel groups. they will massacre the Shiites, Alawites and other minority groups in Syria which they consider as apostates. Christians will also be given the option to convert or to pay special tax for being non-Sunni Muslims. They will have a border with ISrael and establish sleeper cells in Palestine and eventually Annex the whole Palestine into its Caliphate. They will also attack Lebanon and Jordan and thry to spread the caliphate there, and continue fighting the Shia government in Iraq. If ISIS gets lucky, they might even take down the Saudi Government because Saudis are Wahabbists and supporters of Jihad. Current Strength Strongest group in Syria by far. It fights with Assad and all other rebel groups in Syria, and is still able to advance in all fronts, not to mention it is fighting the Iraqi Army and the Kurdish Peshmerga. It benefitted from the weapons and aid provided by the West to the Free Syrian Army because of its past alliance with the latter. It also benefitted from Saudi aid. Now it is self-sufficient, has donors from Qatar and Saudi citizens and has revenue from selling oil from its captured territories.Location Controls the province of Raqqa in Syria and the border between Syria and Iraq. It is now steadily invading the province of Deir es-Zor. In Iraq it controls the city of Mosul and shares a long border with the Kurds. The group Boko Haram in Nigeria and the Islamic fighters which NATO sponsored in Libya pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. Alliances it has past alliances with Free Syrian Army and Jabhat Al Nusra. Might or might not have allied in the past with Islamic Front. Now it fights all these rebel groups and want them to submit to its authority.)

With all these groups, you see how the West failed miserably in its agenda of ousting Assad. It created a cluster**** of factions of rebels and is indirectly responsible for the monster that is ISIS. You know what happened in Libya after the NATO-sponsored war against Khadaffi, Libya turned into a Jihadist wonderland. Syria is going to be ten times worse than that.

Its Assad or nothing for Syria now.

^ that said, is western help for all these groups connected to why the indian undof commander was telling the pinoy peacekeepers to just surrender their weapons and raise the white flag as the afp alleges in the news today? i hope so, because i've been trying to figure out a valid reason for the un commander being such a wuss and have started assuming that cultures who don't circumcise their boys end up raising men who didn't grow balls. like most of the indians at work. probably unfair but i can't help drawing a correlation between the two.

i forgot the details of the conversation i had a couple of years ago (and i'm not sure how much of it is true) when the syrian conflict started but i heard the main reason why the oily arab countries support these groups has less to do with islamism, although there are individuals within these countries who have always supported these causes even before they discovered oil and got rich, but more on putting people they can control in power so they can get favourable deals. because oil pipeline to europe. it's all about the oil for them.
  • waykaonwaykaon Member PExer
@wirehead they are not connected. The UN Peacekeeping Force have a protocol to not use offensive force during the "Observing Mission". Either you get out before a conflict start or risk being captured by a hostile militant force.

The UN official are very naive to think that they can negotiate with terrorist. They are a list of failures of the UN Peacekeeping Force which led to lost of lives and starting of wars. An example of these are the "Rwanda Genocide" which they failed to act quickly and the Removal of UN Peacekeeping Force from Egypt which led to "Six-Day War" (Israel vs the Arab states in the middle East).
