Exegesis: Is it a necessary requirement or is it only a tool to help?

What is your position on exegesis of the scriptures?

1.) Is it necessary that without it, the scriptures or the Word of God will not mean anything, or will not hold to its purpose.

like Ice in Tea, you cannot call Iced Tea, Iced Tea if there is no ice.

2.) or is it only a tool to "better" understand the Holy Word of God.

like spoon and fork, which are tools for eating, you can still eat without spoon and fork.
