    Good:
    Very few dull moments
    Plot
    Homages and References

    Not so good:
Future scenes are a bit too dark, literally
    OOC galore
Continuity mess-ups will ruffle a few feathers

That was fun. Never noticed the time passing by. Never really expected quite much from the movie especially with the enormous cast, I thought they’d have balance and billing issues besides the usual plot holes endemic in time travel stories. I’m sure some fans of certain actors, who didn’t get a lot of screening time will be disappointed, but rest assured they tried to give each and every one a moment to shine… maybe not Rogue.
Pacing was really top notch here as I keep mentioning, there is always something happening. Whether it be character or plot development. Visuals were good, although it felt claustrophobic for me, too many close ups. Audio was okay, derivative of the previous films of course. The kitchen scene, will definitely be included in the top scenes of any CBM, easily worth the admission for me. The few throwback to other films although, were cool, especially seeing Stryker there. Death scenes, however bloodless, were ruthless and morbidly awesome. Continuity is there as a tool for the writers and a reward for long time audiences but never should deter a better story from being told, that being said I didn’t find any glaring continuity issues at all.
Overall, the story is the star here, character and plot driven, it delivers its own thrills and twists as a standalone film and at the same time ties up nicely with the previous films.

I thought the movie would suck big time. Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles is not your conventional horror movie, after all. It is not your typical action thriller, either. The overhyped visual effects was not quite impressive.

What I like about it is its humor and that it’s fun and light. The supporting cast is superb, with Joey Marquez stealing the show! I could not tell if he was joking or serious with his lines, but I ended up laughing anyway.

    Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles
    Directed by: Erik Matti
    Date seen: May 24, 2014
Genre: Horror, Thriller [but mostly comedy to me]

    Movie Title: Midnight in Paris
    Year: 2011
    Genre: Romance/Comedy/Fantasy
    Rating: 7/10

    Midnight-In-Paris.jpg

    Review:

Rachel McAdams and Paris, what else can beat that? Although the movie is more about Gil's (Owen Wilson) adventure, Rachel McAdams has become the favorite love interest of the recent time travel-themed movies' main characters being the only actress in this generation I know that did three movies that are about time traveling (Time Traveler's Wife, Midnight in Paris, and About Time).

Anyway, the movie was set in Paris that includes two young couple who just got engaged, it's a cliche like that.
Whilst fate being unfair to Rachel McAdams (who has done three time travel-themed movies but never actually traveled through time ), Owen Wilson as Gil experienced a couple of flashbacks to the old Paris. Being so fortunate to experience the old and the new Paris, his heart was stolen by the overrated city making him decide to relocate there once they (Inez) got married.

The movie obviously sells the city of love. Anybody who has not been to France and has not seen Paris, je t'aime will definitely fall in love with the city's charm. Showcasing the best qualities of the city where the most hopeful romantic people want to be, Midnight in Paris is still counts as one of the feel-good rom-com-fantasy movies of the year. :)

    Movie Title: Prometheus
    Year: 2012
    Genre: Science-Fiction
    Rating: 7/10

    prometheus.jpg?w=500

This film centers on a crew aboard the spaceship Prometheus as they discover the star map that leads them to the unexplored intergalactic world.

An Archeologist couple, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) were inspired by the inscriptions they found from a 32,000 year old cave pointing them the "supposed" answer to human's existential question. This encourage the multimillionaire Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) to fund their trip along with Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron),the human-robot David (Michael Fassbender) and captain Janek (Idris Elba) joining in for the ride.

This was a really interesting film. The first half of the film was full of overwhelming ideas which are great to "ponder upon" on. Towards the end though, the film kinda dwindle and there were some loopholes (rather unanswered questions via dialogue) which made me thought that this would lead to a sequel. After all, this was Ridley Scott's comeback film.

The film although cliche at some parts have great potentials. It was an intelligent film and there were fresh ideas in it despite the nod towards "Alien." I'm actually more excited to check out its sequel (hopefully we'll get it) because the ending's really weak but a sequel may redeem it.

    Moonrise Kingdom
    2012
    Comedy
    9.5/10

This quirky film tells the story of Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), two tweens who fall in love, become pen pals, and decide to run away together.

It is on a September of 1965, on a town in New England called New Penzance. Twelve-year-old Sam is an orphan, who is a member of their town's Khaki Scouts led by Scout Master Ward (Edward Norton). Meanwhile, Suzy, who is also twelve, lives with her parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) and her three younger brothers. They met during the summer a year before and have been sending letters to each other since then. They eventually decide that they run away together. Because of this event, Suzy's parents, Sam's Khaki Scouts troop and the Island Police Captain (Bruce Willis) went to look for them. They were soon found and told to never see each other again, and for the rest of the movie, we see Sam and Suzy do everything they can to stay together.

To be honest, I've only seen five of Wes Anderson's works, including this one, and I have fallen in love with all of them. His films have some kind of trademark, that you would directly know that it was him who directed a movie. His films just have this eccentric quality, and this is no exception. Although, this one, is probably the most simple of his films, and in a good way! This movie was perfectly done, with wonderful and honest portrayals especially from Gilman and Hayward.

This movie, while not being the most extravagant among his films, it certainly is his most natural flowing written story.

    Roman Holiday
    1953
    Romance
    8.5/10

When Ann (Audrey Hepburn), a crown princess of an unnamed country who is bored out of her mind, decides to escape from her tight tour schedule and explore Rome, she later meets the dashing Joe (Gregory Peck), an American reporter who is in Rome to interview the princess, who didn't know who she was. Groggy from the sedatives given by a doctor, he gives "Anya" (the name Ann gave him) some money so she could take a taxi home, which she stubbornly declines. He later decides to let her stay the night in his apartment. The next day, he finally realizes who the woman in his apartment was, he sees and opportunity and decides to get an exclusive interview for the newspaper he is working for. So Joe decides to travel with her around Rome, hoping to get his scoop not realizing that while on their adventure, they slowly fall in love.

The movie which catapulted the iconic Audrey Hepburn to fame, this is now one of the most mentioned films in pop culture nowadays. This was the first ever old-timey movie I ever saw, and my experience was just the most memorable. I was still 8-years-old, and I was completely amazed by Hepburn's magical aura. And I was so mesmerized by Gregory Peck. I think it was this movie that made me such a sucker for romantic comedies.

This film was light and fun, and definitely one of those classics that somebody should watch over and over again.

A film very much deserving of its Oscar win (Best Original Screenplay,) one can't argue that its one of the intriguing films to come out in years although its premise of falling inlove with a machine (an operating system) was a reminiscent and was very much like the obsession of Al Pacino’s character to Simone. This film however took a direction very different from the latter. The year was 2025 and Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), someone who writes under a company named beautifulhandwrittenletters. Theodore was at the brink of divorcing his wife Catherine (Rooney Mara) and was desperately in need of company until he meets the OS which he named Samantha. Together, they talked about everything they could think of with Theodore seeking love advise from Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) which eventually led to them falling in love with each other.

This was a great portrayal for Joaquin Phoenix. It was so like him (no pun intended.) I love the vulnerability and that longing look in his eyes. The premise may not seemed original at all (with some) but it’s charming and has character. Director Spike Jonze delivered a passive yet arresting sequences of events that is both endearing and unique.

    Director: Spike Jonze
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pratt, Matt Letscher, Sam Jaeger, Luka Jones, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Spike Jonze, Portia Doubleday, Soko, Brian Cox

    Review:

The adage "first love never dies" may not entirely true, sure most of us experienced a very intense and emotional first serious relationships that are almost hard to forget. La vie d'Ad?le or Blue Is The Warmest Colour is a French film about a 15 year old Ad?le slipping from her childhood experiencing her first love.

Ad?le finds her first love in Emma, a blue-haired art student girl, a bit older than her and brought her to a wild and exciting ride of an uncommon love. Ad?le eventually grows, finds herself, loses herself, and finds herself again through all of her experiences in and out of her relationship with Emma.

Although the theme of the movie is not really unusual to French culture, to a very conservative nation like us Filipinos, it may surprise everyone to find themselves engaging to the life of Ad?le. Not the usual happily ever after, most people probably think it did not end well but for me it ended perfectly. Because that's how first loves usually end and everyone experienced it.

If you have seen a lot of gay-themed movies, you may find its plot predictable. Anchored with two great actors and explicit scenes, Blue Is The Warmest Colour is one of the three-hour long non-English films that are worth watching. *okay*

42 tells the story of how Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), with the help of Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), made history by breaking the baseball color barrier and becoming the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball.

It was decent, at best. The story is one that is definitely worth telling, but the film's treatment of it was nothing special. The film somehow felt like it was doing just enough, when it had the potential to be so much more. It could have been more powerful, more compelling. Instead, we get something that is bordering on dull. That said, I don't regret seeing it. Jackie Robinson's story is worth knowing, and it's something even non-baseball fans like me can appreciate.

    Title: Bekikang
    Release Date: October 23, 2013
    Genre: Comedy, Drama (?)
    Director: Wenn V. Deramas
    Rating: 6.24/10

    Review:

Am really not a fan of Deramas' works because his films are known to have lame funny antics, cheap pranks and over the top gags but Bekikang is a breath of fresh air.

The story is about Bekikang (Joey Paras), a breadwinner to an extended family who dreams about having his own family as well. After his object of affection, Fortune (Tom Rodriguez), left the country for a better employment opportunity Bekikang was entrusted to take care of Potpot (JM Iba?ez) whom he loved and cared for as his own son.

Casting is done in a way that the main character was able to grab the spotlight by himself and only by himself. Same thing goes with the cameos, they served their purpose, mere embellishments. I actually liked Maricel Soriano's feature, it seemed so natural :glee:
Also, that part where Potpot almost got drowned and Beki threw a fit, very intense! Bravo!

Although, the film centers around a gay character, it resulted into a lighthearted story about family and it's importance whether your bonded by blood or not. I enjoyed Paras' style of comedy as well as the supports though, there are some mind-numbing skits and corny punch lines. Nevertheless, the movie is entertaining albeit Deramas' tacky comedic techniques.

Charming, witty and beyond adorable - this is what Little Manhattan is all about. Gabe (Josh Hutcherson) narrates the story, a young kid from Manhattan whose parents are on a brink of divorce. Gabe tells you how his young heart fell for the first time with the beautiful Rosemary and how the latter broke it. This is cuteness overload in a whole new level. Now if you like Peeta Mellark in Hunger Games movie, you'd love him here!!! The movie totally delivers in the mushy-mushy department and totally smash it at the same time with the love lessons brouhaha. The film was a thorough inspection of young love - or rather first love if you'd like to call it like that. It's so 500 days of Summer - the kids edition and I soo love it! Little Manhattan is a film that'd give you the laughs and the aweee factor.

Best scene ever: Gabe bawling on his tidy whitey undies! LOL

    Review:

Not really a cup of tea for someone who is a sucker for rom-com, feel-good, and coming-of-age kind of movies like me, On The Job is a must-see film of 2013 for Filipino adults. The movie is about two prisoners who get in and out of jail to assassinate people on the orders of those who are in power and two cops who are seeking the cause of the rising body count in their turf -- four lives intertwined by their government's corruption and trickery.

The four main characters were portrayed well by our top-notch actors, Joel Torre, Piolo Pascual, Joey Marquez, and Gerald Anderson. Although Pascual and Anderson were beaten by their co-stars, they fairly did well on their end. Joel Torre who played Tatang, exceeded my expectations on his portrayal to the role. I couldn't help but see Bryan Cranston in him while watching the film. :glee:

On The Job is an eye opener; a fresh one from the usual romantic and non-sense dramedy. Definitely a beacon of hope for the Philippine mainstream movie. *okay*

I didn't read the book but I enjoyed watching this movie. Maybe it's not for everybody who are easily bored since the story is quite dragging in some parts. But the way the movie was presented, from the setting to the costumes and the visual effects, it was forgivable. If you really pay attention, it feels magical and you will appreciate the beautiful details that Scorsese put into this, especially depicting old Paris and the train station. I love Chloe Grace Moretz who played Isabelle, she is brilliant. She gives light to the movie. The kid who played Hugo was good but quite lacked emotion. I also found the automaton quite creepy. LOL.

The part I also loved was the unfolding of George Melies's story. It was quite fascinating, and those old movies were a joy to watch.

It definitely deserved most of the technical awards it received from the Oscars. Great film by Martin Scorsese.

"I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know they always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured if the world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I am here for a reason."

    X-Men: Days Of Future Past
    2014
    Action
    9/10

This is probably hands down so far the best X-Men flick ever. It was x-citing, x-plosive and absolutely x-traordinary! :naughty:

This film starts in an apocalyptic future, where mutants are in hiding from robots called the Sentinels, that were designed to hunt and kill anyone with a mutant gene. The X-Men-- or what's left of them anyway, decide to take drastic measures and send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back into the past to stop the events that led to everything that is happening in the present.

I swear, this movie kept me on my toes in every scene, and I did not notice the time pass by. The effects were amazing, and the Sentinels were pretty cool! My only issue was, there were some plot holes, and that there were not enough shining moments for the all heroes. I was kinda disappointed that Halle Berry's Storm didn't get enough screen time, and that despite having key roles in the movie, both Shadowcat (Ellen Page) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), also didn't get much screen time, as the entire film mostly focused on the young Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, respectively), Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique, and Wolverine.

Other than that, I think this is currently the best X-Men film story-wise.

Move over, Prince Charmings. Here come the fairytale villains. In recent times, they are presented as complex beings, mostly misunderstood and victims of terrible circumstances. Such is the story of Maleficent.

Far from being the nasty witch who cursed Aurora into a lifetime of sleep, Maleficent was once a pleasant fairy with a pure and loving heart. In a magical forest kingdom, she met a young boy and fell in love. But the most hideous human emotions in resentment and ambition turned this boy into a power-hungry person, betraying Maleficent in the process. Lost in hurt and anger, Maleficent hardened into the villain we’re all too familiar with. But the tale of Sleeping Beauty does not end there. And the events that followed her cursing of Aurora might just surprise Maleficent.

Angelina Jolie totally owned the character with her brilliant portrayal. You feel her pain and anger, compassion and love. She is a magical creature, yet very human all throughout the film. Sadly, aside from its stunning visuals, Jolie’s Maleficent is the only delightful aspect of the film. The supporting cast is ineffective and boring, Sleeping Beauty included. In fact, Aurora was at her best when she was a babbling baby. It’s not that big of a deal, when you think about it. The movie is about Maleficent after all. She's all that matters. ;)
