    Review:

The recipient of six nominations and winner of Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling awards of the recent Academy Awards deserved its perfect 10 out of 10 rating. Getting used to Matthew McConaughey's perfectly ripped physique, one will barely recognize him at the beginning of the film. A story of struggling HIV infected cowboy, Matthew delivered an unbelievable effort to be able to portray Ron Woodroof. Same thoughts for the bad-guy from Panic Room turned rockstar (30 Seconds To Mars) turned drug addict, and HIV-positive trans woman Rayon played by Jesus Christ's doppelganger Jared Leto. :glee:

A story whirls not only on the dilemma of a person infected with a deadly virus, Dallas Buyers Club is a story of shared struggle for dignity and acceptance. :)

    Movie Title: The Iceman
    Year: 2013
    Genre: Crime, Thriller
    Rating: 6/10

Caught this on cable last night. I had no idea what it was about, but the first few minutes intrigued me so I decided to watch it. Regretted my decision halfway through because it was sooo boring, I was struggling to keep my eyes open towards the end. The fact that I was watching it around 11pm on a weeknight didn't help at all.

The Iceman is based on the story of Richard Kuklinski, a hitman who gained infamy working for the mob during the 60s-80s. Michael Shannon, who plays the lead character, is backed by a supporting cast including Winona Ryder, as his wife who has no idea what he does for a living, Ray Liotta, his boss, and Chris Evans, barely recognizable here as a freelance hitman he works with during the latter part of his criminal career.

Though I was bored to tears, I wouldn't say outright that this is a bad film, but it's not something I'd recommend either, unless you really like Michael Shannon. His performance is easily the best thing about the movie. The guy pulls off crazy really well. Fans of mob/mafia films might find it interesting as well. Personally though, I feel like I could've skipped this one. I just tell myself that I learned something new, at least. Although I doubt my newfound knowledge about Richard Kuklinski's life will ever prove useful. :glee:

    Review:

Growing up surrounded by older cousins, I was immersed in everything 80's. Be it music, fashion and hairstyles, pop-culture and of course movies, these I got to appreciate during my tender years.
One of the movies I got to love is Bagets, which was released years even before I was born.
It's that typical coming-of-age film which showcased an all-star cast that despite the crappy plot and annoying transitions to show character development, managed to become a blockbuster hit during its time.

The movie follows the lives of 5 young boys; Adie (Aga Muhlach), Arnel (Raymond Lauchengco), Tonton (William Martinez), Gilbert (Herbert Bautista) and Topee (JC Bonnin) as they go through the ups and downs of teenage years, high school ordeals, family problems and cheesy relationships. I would say that among the five, I related the most to Topee, a brooding mama's boy. Though some scenes and dialogues are irritating and are somehow lackluster, I enjoyed it nevertheless. Arguably, Bagets created a cult following among young Filipino movie fans, and has had a strong influence among the modern Filipino youth that still permeates up to this day.

    She's The Man
    2006
    Comedy
    8.5/10

Soccer player Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) cannot wait for the incoming school year to start so she can start training with her all-girls soccer team again. But later, she finds out that the team had been cut from the school's annual budget. She insists that the girls should be allowed to try out for the boys' team to which the coach just laughed at and declined. Because of not siding with her, Viola breaks up with her boyfriend, Justin (Robert Hoffman).

    Viola+end+of+discussion+fine+end+of+relationship.jpg

Now having a desire to prove to them that girl's can be as good as guys when it comes to soccer, she tries to find a way to play for the rival school, Illyria's soccer team. The opportunity is presented in her twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk), who instead of going to school is flying to London with his band for a music festival. She decides to pretend to be her brother and then tryout for the team.

As soon as she arrives at Illyria, she realizes that this task seemed to be much harder to pull off now that she's actually doing it.

    tumblr_l7odtyhSQM1qa53bzo1_500.jpg

Probably another reason why this is going to be hard for her is her hot roommate, Duke Orsino (Channing Tatum), who also plays on the school's soccer team. After the tryouts, Viola, as Sebastian, was assigned second string which didn't please her.

Meanwhile, Viola's lab partner Olivia (Laura Ramsey) develops as crush on her as Olivia thinks that Viola as Sebastian isn't "like most guys". This upsets Duke, because he likes Olivia. So in exchange for Viola helping Duke with Olivia, he helps her (as Sebastian) practice so she could get to first string before the team's first game. Because of this, they become good friends.

At a fund-raising carnival, Duke meets Viola as herself, and they share a kiss at the kissing booth which he can't stop thinking about. He shares his sentiments with Viola as Sebastian, and she insists that he should call her and ask her out. He tells "Sebastian" that he is confused, which resulted to a heart-to-heart talk.

A few days later, Duke was now convinced to call Viola, which excited her very much, until Olivia approaches Duke and reels him back in again. This annoyed Viola, not knowing that Olivia only did it to make "Sebastian" jealous. It was evident that Olivia didn't like Duke, but he was too smitten with her to see it.

    02d8151f7abd9f44fc7c649a8ce8360c.jpg

Olivia, now tired of waiting for "Sebastian" to notice her, has officially decided to make her first move. When the real Sebastian arrives, she goes ahead and kisses him, which Duke saw from a distance. Seeing what he just saw, he takes it out on Viola, which she didn't really understand, but now knows that her act of pretending to be her brother has finally gone to far.

This movie is one of those movies I never get tired of watching over and over again. Amanda Bynes was perfection, and she and Channing Tatum had chemistry, which one can still really see when she's dressed as a boy. I loved all their scenes together.

The entire cast had their own shining moments, which I loved. The film's plot is very unrealistic, but that's what usually makes movies good. They make unrealistic stories seem quite possible, and I guess that's what I loved about this movie.

This is one of those uber-adorable films when Meg Ryan still looks normal and Matthew Broderick's boyish charms will keep you wondering why until this day hasn't faded.

Addicted To Love centers on Broderick and Ryan as two lovesick strangers out in New York City who joined together in the name of love - that is for Sam (Broderick,) he want to win over her ex-fiance who leaves him for Anton (a french chef) whom Maggie (Ryan) is out to avenge her failed relationship.

The first time I've seen this film, I was like 9 or 10 and I find it extremely funny back then. Re-watching it on DVD, it still has its charm and I just loved how Broderick and Ryan complimented each other so much! They have such good chemistry! This movie may not be the best rom-com films ever but it's a feel good film to watch over a weekend of DVD marathon with love-ones or friends

    Review:

I never knew about 12 Years A Slave until it won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role through the fierce and unbelievably beautiful Lupita Nyong'o and other awards in the recent Oscar's. The film's wins and Lupita's charm got me curious about it.

Being a sucker for movies with art, drama, intense exchange of lines, depth, and history, 12 Years A Slave is everything rolled into one. A story based on a New York State citizen's memory who was taken and made a slave, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), the movie was told incredibly through its poignant story telling and well written script.

The movie reminded me of The Help, only it is a heavier true story of a black man's battle for freedom.

Awesome movie, from the visuals, the drama, the score, it was all awesome.

The visuals, Godzilla’s animation and rendition was great, the way they showed the scale of damage and danger, jaw-dropping. They definitely delivered when they said they we’re making a disaster movie.
The plot had great moments, it’s a straight up drama for the humans, especially from the start to the middle part, and it kind of dipped a little after that. Ford’s story, as well as other humans, was not really that engaging, I wish they’d angled a little avenging as part of his motivation.
Score was top notch, the best I heard this year, especially the opening theme and the opening sequence, really gives you the feeling of foreboding.

It isn’t perfect though, it dragged a little especially when showing the scale and damage, I thought it overdid it there. It’s still quality filmmaking, just a little overdone, too many sweeping and dramatic entrances, especially since people were waiting for the titular monster and again they over did the teasing also. They made up for it by the final quarter of the film so by then you forget the waiting and they make it all worth it.

Overall an epic film, they made true to the promise of delivering a disaster film side by side with the monster.

Title: X-Men: Days of Future's Past
    Genre: Action/Adventure
    Rating: 9/10

Showcasing the biggest assembly of Marvel's mutants ever, 'Days of Future Past' claws its way on top of the franchise.

    X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Cast-poster-570x829.jpg

Sensing the brink of extinction, Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) unite together in an attempt to save their species from the Sentinels. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) travels back in time to stop Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), now called Mystique, from killing anti-mutant scientist Dr. Trask (Peter Dinklage). Logan has to convince both the younger Magneto and Charles to stop Mystique before she gets captured and studied, which in turn would give way to the creation of Sentinels.

While, there is so much incoherence in how the time travel aspect of the plot is presented, this must still be Bryan Singer's best X-Men film. The greatest strength of this movie lays on how it pays so much more attention to its story and script than the visual spectacle it can surely serve. Surprisingly, the movie vaunts some funny and light moments particularly those with Quicksilver (Evan Peter). Quicksilver has enjoyed highlight in this film as his section is streaked with laugh-rendering wit and humor. Jennifer's role is arguably one of the central if not the most vital in the movie. Hugh Jackman's take remains the same, but somehow feels fresh. Michael Fassbender's Magneto and James McAvoy's Professor X are satisfying than their old counterparts, which, by the way, is not surprising, as the rest of the cast are actually just story pawns.

'Days of Future Past' is a bold take to raise the X-Men franchise into another level. Its toying with history is ambitious, suspenseful and confusing, but it nonetheless manages to escalate itself to a higher ground. A surging epic and a gripping tale that seems not to loosen its hold on the audiences, 'Days of A Future Past' must be X-Men's biggest installment to date.

    Mad_Love_%281995%29_film_poster.jpg

This movie remains to be one of my favorites from Chris O' Donnell. It may not be his best film ever but it's one of the first few films that I've seen from him. O'Donnell plays Matt Leland, a responsible high school student who fell for Casey Roberts (Drew Barrymore), the new girl in school who lives across their home and suffers bipolar disorder. With hormones raging and all, they runaway from home hoping that they could escape "reality" and be on their own but it was doubly hard for Matt because of Casey's condition and they both have to realize something before they end up doing something stupid.

Despite bad reception by the critics, I still find the whole thing watchable. It has heart even though the storyline's really weak - the film was able to maintain a stoic semblance of what teenagers are going through at some point in time.

Mad Love may have failed miserably in delivering a perfect story line but with good sounds, the fantastic duo of O'Donnell and Barrymore - I should think that those are more than enough to give this movie a chance to be seen.

    Meet The Robinsons
    2007
    Family
    7.5/10

Meet The Robinsons tells the story of an orphan named Lewis, who is an aspiring inventor. Wanting to know who is mother is and why she left him, he attempts to create an invention that will allow him to see into his memories, but before he is able to do so, a boy named Wilbur Robinson warns him about a man in a bowler hat that is trying to steal his invention and then whisks him into the future. Now, in the future, Lewis meets Wilbur's family and realizes that this was everything he's ever wanted, and did not want to go back to his time anymore, which Wilbur's family disagree with, because if it wasn't for Lewis, the Robinsons wouldn't exist.

The entire film was full of laughs, yet it still has heart. Even you would sympathize for the villain. I loved the relationship between Wilbur and Lewis, which turned out even better because eventually Lewis found out that they were related. But despite that fact, the Robinsons family will teach you that even if you aren't related to somebody by blood, it doesn't mean that they can't be your family.

    Review:

Ellen Page who just recently announced that she is gay is the main protagonist in the passive-aggresive with uncommon setting, and 2007 coming-of-age film Juno. Juno MacGuff, a relaxed, sarcastic, smart, teenage girl got pregnant by her friend Bleeker (Michael Cera) at the age of 16. It is amazing how the main character faced her apparently unplanned and unwanted pregnancy at ease. Not really taking it as joke but rather in a very sardonic way which was perfectly showed by Page.

My favorite Jennifer Garner was here too as the future mother and adoptive parent of Juno's unborn child. I was actually expecting Juno to take back her decision of giving up the child to Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and raise the child herself as the end of the film but no. That part of the movie wet my eyes a bit. :depressed:

Juno has very refreshing feels, good soundtrack, and cute props (I'm talking about that hamburger phone  ), and remarkable lesson: pro-life always. Not for the kids so much (below 13) but it's a must-see of this generation's teenagers for obvious reasons. :)

This is the first time I have watched an X-Men film and I loved it. It was great because it can be watched as a stand-alone film, all the backstories were explained and there was just little confusion on my part. I loved the performances of the actors, especially Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. It was also fun to see other characters unknown to me, especially Blink. The visual effects were great and convincing, and there was enough action for the casual viewer. The plot was marvelously done, especially with the time travel part, which a lot of sci-fi films have problems with.

It's 1950 in London, and Hester (Rachel Weisz) feels trapped in her loving but passionless marriage with William (Simon Russell Beale), a High Court judge who is a number of years her senior. She later meets then ends up in a passionate affair with the handsome Freddie (Tom Hiddleston), a former Royal Air Force pilot who is haunted by his experiences before. Freddie brings excitement into Hester's life which later causes her emotional turmoil as he couldn't offer her the kind of love that William has for her. But she also does not want to back to a passionless relationship. What started out to be an escape from her boring life, later wrecks her.

Tom Hiddleston [who is currently my favorite actor] isn't really the one who's carrying this film, but his take on the troubled but charming Freddie was flawless. Rachel Weisz was absolutely amazing in this film. She gave Hester this vulnerability and strength at the same time that just flows on screen.

The movie had this magical yet heartbreaking quality, and the scoring just added more of that into the film.

    Title: Katyn
    Country: Poland
    Year Released: 2007
    Genre: Drama/War
    Rating: 9/10

I seldom like war-themed movies, as they, for me, are not just usually boring and generic, but also hard to comprehend, but this one definitely takes a great hold in me.

    katyn.jpg

Probably polish director Andrzej Wajda's best work to date, "Katyn" narrates the horror and drama of the forest massacre in Poland ordered by the Soviet Government in 1940. A tale of enduring fury and guilt, "Katyn" delivers an astounding yet haunting recollection of what could be considered the greatest cover-up in Polish history.

Upon Stalin's command, the Soviets mass-slaughter more than 22,000 Polish prisoners of war in Katyn Forest in Western Russia. The then new Polish government holds servile deference to the Russians that they agree to back their claim it was the Nazis that executed the polish prisoners. For decades, that lie is published as truth, only to be contradicted by Gorbachev in 1990.

The movie entails an agonizing account of what really happened in the massacre, but more than that it delves deeper to the more haunting stories behind the victims that fell prey to the Soviets. The shift from the start of the war to the occupation is seamless and is given with utmost attention, its agony and confusion unbearable. The story treads carefully from one character to another, and connects them to its core --the controversial massacre. There are lots of restrained surreal moments carried out in brilliant depictions in the film, some ironic representations to illustrate the scale of the massacre's effects are there. The actors and script are equally exceptional, and the portrayal are carried out with believability.

A satisfying blend of conventional narrative and documentary-style film making, 'Katyn' is one of the most masterfully-crafted war films I've ever seen.

    School_ties.jpg

With future Hollywood biggies assembling the cast of this 1992 film, it's perhaps one of those good "School Movies" to come-out pre-Harry Potter era. Don't get the wrong idea though; it isn't like that at all. This is a story of anti-Semitism and elitism if you may say so. Brendan Fraser plays David Green, a working class Jewish teenager who got himself a football scholarship in his senior year to an exclusive school in Massachusetts. Here, David meets his team mates who are part of the "upper echelon" and have shown Jewish prejudice that made David uncomfortable in so many ways.

We also have here the evil Matt Damon who plays Charlie Dillon whom David replaces as the blocker in the team which totally pisses the former off. To add salt to the injury, he also loses his girlfriend to David. Ouch!

The whole thing didn't explode in there though - after being harassed for his religion, he was also scrutinized for cheating on a final exam as Dillon exploits his influence to encourage everyone in the school honor system committee to oust Green.

You see, it was actually a well written plot for a feel good "redemption movie." There were moments in the book that you'd take the punch for David, like you want to give it good to Dillon. Oh, Did I mention that we also have Chris O' Donnell and Ben Affleck here? No, they're merely a support act. You see, it's a delicate process figuring out where this movie really stands. Like remix dead poet society / scent of a woman / with honors then add some football scholarship angle and you'd get a substandard result - that my friend is School Ties for you.

I really loved X-Men: First Class, and I've been looking forward to seeing this one for a very long time. My anticipation kept building up every time I saw a clip or read an article about it, so I guess it's partly my fault why I felt slightly underwhelmed. Plotwise, it was a bit of a letdown. And having seen all of the previous X-Men movies, it was not easy for me to ignore the plot holes and continuity issues. I was willing to overlook them in the end though, because I thought everything else was great. I loved the action, the humor, and the performances. The thing I loved most, though, was the same thing I loved in First Class: Fassbender and McAvoy's Magneto and Xavier. Those two are just awesome. Plus, there's Quicksilver, of course, who, despite his limited screen time, had some of the most memorable scenes in the movie. All in all, X-Men: Days of Future Past may not have been perfect, but it was perfectly enjoyable.

I just stumbled upon this movie in cable TV and was immediately hooked as I saw Leo Martinez's scenes. My dad enjoyed it as he can relate to the jokes from a fellow senior citizen .

That is what I think is the best part of the movie though. Leo Martinez as Tonio was so natural as a geriatric who suddenly wants to be a baker that he dreams of becoming all his life. His banters with his skeptical wife and his senior citizen friends who support him are so funny because it's so real. The scenes are hilarious but also endearing.

That is just one of the three stories, and each characters are actually intertwined. The editing was great as to how they connected each story to another.

The other character is of Eugene Domingo as Fiesta, a terror bus operator who has an alcoholic father and falls in love with Nato (Jake Cuenca). And the other is Enchong Dee as Caloy, a teenager who is excited to lose his virginity with his girlfriend. Among the stories, the most lengthy one was of Fiesta, it was good and Eugene was convincing as a tough woman, but I think it could've been shorter. The weakest was of Enchong's.

Anyway, what I like about the film is the humor and the HD quality of the film. The scenes are colorful and vivid, it's very pleasant to watch. I just thought the ending was ridiculous as the three characters got barbecued with a metal rod from a bus accident. And also the beggar boy seemed out of place.

All in all, I enjoyed watching the movie and it's one of the better indie films out there. It's story is unique and it's nice to see something out-of-the-box. The ending makes you think that life is really unpredictable, nobody knows when we will die so think about how ready we are when that time comes.

Claire (Anne Hathaway), a young therapist, is called to treat the survivors of a recent plane crash. Among them is Eric (Patrick Wilson), a charming fellow, who is trying to be nonchalant about the incident as possible, which to Claire looked like he was suppressing all his stress from the trauma. Her professional relationship with Eric soon blossoms into a romance, despite her better judgement. Eventually things start to get suspicious, as her patients disappear one by one. Claire thinks that the airline is trying to cover up the real reason of why their plane crash, but her search for justice for the victims leads to the discovery that will shock her.

The movie starts a bit slow, but when the patients start disappearing, that's when things start to get interesting. Anne Hathaway's performance here wasn't her best, but I loved this movie. It just made me rattle my brain so hard and think. Even I was completely surprised when I got to the realization of what really happened.

It was smart and well-written, so if you're a fan of mysteries, you should definitely see this.

'Let the Right One In' is about a bullied boy, an ancient vampire and the friendship that developed between them.

Probably, the best Swedish film I've seen, this Tomas Alfredson-directed movie is clearly a stand out, defying its own genre with a subtle and haunting approach to horror and romance.

Oskar (K?re Hedebrant), a regularly bulied young boy meets Eli (Lina Leanderson), a mysterious young girl who has just moved with his father next to Oskar's apartment. The development of their friendship coincides with a rash of deaths in town and Oskar finds out that Eli is a vampire. Frightened at first, his developing affection for Eli soon takes precedence over his fear, while he allows his emotions to keep digging depths inside him, ignoring his realization about Eli not being really a girl. And as their friendship further developed, Oskar has to face both his demons and the complications of his evolving affection for Eli.

Oskar and Eli are perfectly portrayed, deep and bruisingly-emotional--a feat almost impossible to see from actors that young. Their chemistry cast a haunting spell, their almost innocence further making the already incredibly satisfying charm more believable. The original score is brilliant and is equally haunting as the story, perfectly blending the drama with dark yet heart-stirring chamber music. A remarkably moving horror movie, 'Let the Right One in' weaves a sinister yet brilliant coming-of-age tale that sets itself apart from the already becoming generic take on 'vampire' genre in today's cinema, giving it a renewed and bold vision of the said category.

As time-travelling movie plotlines could be quite messy, I try to ignore minor inconsistencies in them. But with X-Men: Days of Future Past, it’s quite hard not to notice these glaring continuity issues.

In a post-apocalyptic future, the mutants are on the brink of extinction. They are being hunted down by a fleet of predatory robots known as Sentinels. The surviving X-Men, led by Professor X (don’t ask me how) and Magneto, take refuge in Mongolia, where Kitty does some major hoodoo to send Wolverine back in time. Logan aims to undo a terrible deed that will change history and alter the future, saving humans and mutants alike.

My initial fear was that this movie would be yet another Wolverine film. I’m glad it’s not. While Hugh Jackman plays a crucial part in its time travel aspect, he doesn’t overwhelm it. Lawrence, McAvoy and Fassbender act as a trio of leads, with Jennifer’s Mystique being the central character. Movie spin-off, anyone?

Overall, I am still a bit underwhelmed. Make no mistake, though, X-Men: Days of Future Past remains an enjoyable must-see. Watch out for Quicksilver and the prison break scene – my favorite parts of the film. And hey, since this movie offers a potential reset button for us to see our favorite mutants again in the next X-Men films, I’ll take it. ;)
