We explore the next great adventure of our favorite web-slinging superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It picks up a few months after the events in the first film with Peter Parker saving people and fighting crimes in the city of New York. He’s back with Gwen Stacy and they’re graduating from high school. Everything seems to be going well for Peter until the memory of Gwen’s dead father bugs him. He begins to feel guilty for maintaining his relationship with Gwen after promising her dad that he wouldn’t. So they break up. Again. Probably for the nth time.

Somewhere in the city, an Oscorp employee is having an awful birthday. Max Dillon is a loner and practically invisible. To make things more terrible, he gets involved in a freak accident. He gets electrocuted that turned him Electro, a semi-super villain that feeds on and harnesses electricity.

Harry Osborne is also introduced. He returns to visit his dying father and assume the position he’ll leave behind. But, as it turns out, he has the same degenerative disease that killed his father. He needs Spider-Man’s blood to find a cure.

And this, I think, is the movie’s biggest problem. There are a lot of things going on at once. You have Gwen and Peter’s transition from high school to college, their on-and-off relationship, Electro, Gwen leaving, Harry Osborne, and Peter’s obsession with his parents’ past. Things happen because they have to, not because they are given a chance to evolve. This further leads to poor character development. Electro is almost reduced to being just a cameo role for Jamie Foxx. There’s enough potential and material for probably two or three full-length movie sequels. It’s unfortunate because they have such talented actors in this line-up.

I still believe that Andrew Garfield’s the better Peter Parker. You have Emma Stone who makes you completely forget about MJ (I already feel bad for Shailene Woodley as early as now). She IS Gwen Stacy, sharing great chemistry with Andrew Garfield. Sally Field, once again, and as expected, gives us what she does best. Dane DeHaan also proves that he has the acting chops to compete with his fellow young actors.

Through far from being perfect, I still enjoyed seeing The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s a much lighter and more fun version of its angst-driven predecessor. I wish the storyline was more organized and fluid and that the characters were more developed. Maybe the filmmakers will have them fixed moving forward. ;)

Unaware of this film until I stumbled upon it in the Movie Forums here, I find the buzz about it then pretty interesting. Not a few mentioned that it's one of the most disturbing films of all time - at least for them. I was able to get myself a copy and right after watching it - I feel like a changed person - or maybe not.

It was about a porn star who agreed to shoot an art film only to find out that what he's participating in with was actually a snuff film.

(A snuff film is a motion picture genre that depicts the actual murder of a person or people, without the aid of special effects, for the express purpose of distribution and entertainment or financial exploitation - wikipedia)

Watching it could get a bit draggy if not for the gory scenes depicted each time I blinked my eyes. It’s beyond gory to be honest. The torture sex scene, the baby scene, the rape are all beyond my mental strength to linger over. It was an intelligent film if you go beyond its visuals. From where it was filmed, you could easily tell that it’s beyond art that pushes this film to be as - well, as fantastic as it is –that is — concept wise.

Or maybe I'm just mollified by the explanation of its director regarding the film's comparison to their government. Nonetheless, it was a thoroughly disgusting film but it has something that's worth the talk.

The movie tells the story of Reuben (Ben Stiller), who worked as insurance risk assessment expert, a man who was cheated on by his wife on the day of their honeymoon. Heartbroken, he returns home, attempts to pick up the pieces and fix his life. In a matter of moments, he runs into Polly (Jennifer Aniston), an old classmate of his, and sparks fly. Reuben is a cautious type of person, and Polly is more of the risk-taker. Them being opposites is being highlighted as one of the funny parts in the film. Everything is going great for Reuben and Polly, until his wife comes back to his life.

The movie was packed with funny moments, but I personally think they're only funny during the first time you watch the movie. Stiller and Aniston didn't really have chemistry, in my opinion, but they did have pretty heartwarming moments in the film.

Carly believes she has finally found a perfect partner in Mark. That is, until she tries to surprise him at his house, only to find out that he already is married to Kate. Carly does not want anything to do with him (and her) anymore, but Kate goes bonkers when reality finally sinks in. They later team up with another one of Mark’s mistresses, Amber. Through the unlikely turn of events, the three became best of friends; and together, they plot their revenge.

The Other Woman does not offer anything new or significant, but it manages to remain fun all throughout. It is difficult to think such a story would actually happen in real life, but who cares, really? One will enjoy the great vibe created by the three leads. If you’ve seen The Amazing Spider-Man already and still wants to watch an entertaining film, maybe this one’s for you.

    Beastly
    2011
    Fantasy
    8/10

Based on a best-selling young adult novel of the same name, Beastly tells the story of Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) , an arrogant, narcissistic young man who insults one of his schoolmates and ended up being a victim of a cruel curse: he becomes the ugliest of all. And the only way to break this curse is that if somebody would love him in his hideous form before his time is up or else he will stay that way forever.

Enter Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens) , a smart, timid girl who has been Kyle's schoolmate that he never completely noticed back when he was still all in his hot guy glory. He realizes that she could be the one who could break his curse. Through a deal Kyle made with her father, Lindy was forced to live Kyle, who now changed his name to Hunter so she wouldn't know that he was the Kyle that she used to have a huge crush on.

When at first all Kyle/Hunter wanted was to get Lindy to tell him that she loves him, he slowly sees everything he never saw in her at first glance, and realizes how beautiful she really is. And as his feelings slowly grow for her, he also changes in a good way.

Okay, first things first. As a child, my favorite fairy tale was Beauty and the Beast, and I thought that this was a good interpretation of that story. Secondly, I didn't really see or feel the chemistry between Hudgens and Pettyfer, though they were at least pretty convincing. Mary-Kate Olsen was too bland for my taste as Kyle and Lindy's witchy schoolmate. Neil Patrick Harris' presence was most welcoming as Kyle's blind tutor. The story was now too predictable, as it had been inspired by the fairy tale I mentioned earlier, but if you want to see something to pass the time, then include this on your list.

Movie Title: Ang Lalake Sa Parola (The Man In The Lighthouse)
    Year: 2007
    Genre: Drama
    Rating: 6/10

    Ang-Lalake-sa-Parola-poster.jpg

Ang Lalake sa Parola have big, big potentials. Director Joselito Altarejos could’ve maneuvered this film into a different direction to come up with a masterpiece. “… Parola” chronicles the journey of Mateo (Harry Laurel), a lighthouse caretaker from a rural area; and Jerome, a gay man from the city who seduces the naive Mateo to enter an homoerotic relationship with him.

The film's plot was a metaphorical rendition of how homosexuality encompasses the lives of men even from the remotest of area. The myth about fairies was a great parallelism to the focal point of the story. That may be the word. The film is full of parallelism that it failed to deliver an actual storyline which in the end resulted to a confusing finale.

Harry Laurel who played the lead here as the naive Mateo was a delight to watch! Being the lead, (and this film being his debut film) you'd think that he won't really deliver but the guy was very charming esp with that regional accent! He's got this subtle attack in the role and I'm hoping that he'd be offered more job like this.

The film may have a weak structure but the good thing is that it'll keep you on your seat just to see what will happen to Mateo in the end.

Amelie is different. As a child, she was lonely and starved for attention. Her father thought she was sickly, while her mother got involved in a freak accident. Despite these, she grew up as a well-adjusted, cheerful woman who enjoys life’s simple pleasures. That is, until Princess Diana’s fatal car crash. This is when she realizes her greatest mission in life – to bring happiness to those around her while there is time. What she doesn’t realize just yet is that going on such a quest may also change her life forever.

It’s amazing how the film manages to present so many of the small, good things in life in such excellent detail. Charming and magical, Amelie guarantees to put a smile on your face. An absolute must-watch.

P.S. The lead is a dead ringer for Kyle XY’s Jessie.

The second installment of Marc Webb's Spider-Man series is a step-up from the first as it is bigger in terms of action scenes and has a more complex storyline.

I certainly enjoyed watching the fight scenes much more with Spidey's good-old web-slinging frenzy. It felt like a jam-packed superhero movie with lots of subplots and villains. It's both a good and a bad thing though. Good because it's very enjoyable and there are no dull moments as the scenes quickly change from another. Andrew Garfield still delivers as the cool and easy-going superhero, Spider-man, I love his side jokes whenever he's in the middle of a fight. He's saving the world, that's a great pressure, but you can see that he's having a great time. But I think Andrew was stellar playing as Peter Parker, his Peter is not the nerdy one we knew before. I don't wish to compare, since he and Toby had a different take on the character. But I think this new Peter Parker is more realistic, he is a normal teenage boy. He is playful, never boring, and just another lovestruck guy to his impossibly beautiful girlfriend. Peter Parker feels like a boy you would see next door, he's not old-fashioned, he's childish and impulsive but adorable, and a very relatable character. Andrew is very effortless and confident, and that just shows on the screen.

Emma Stone also sets this movie apart from other superhero films as she is not only the most appealing, she and Andrew had the best chemistry ever. Not only because they're for real, but because they compliment each other. They are never awkward, and their scenes together could pass up for a separate romantic-comedy film. Their scenes give the movie it's own charm. Emma fits Gwen Stacy perfectly, as she is so effortless in being Peter's loyal but independent girlfriend. Gwen is not the damsel-in-distress waiting for her Prince to save her, she wants to be part of Peter's life and not just watch on the sidelines. She plays a big part in the movie
including the fate of one of the villains, but consequently including hers. I guess that's the price of being Spidey's girl.
I honestly liked what they did, because they stuck to the comic character's story.

Another good thing is Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn. I never knew the actor before, and I don't remember James Franco's version to compare him to. He has this intensity with him but not losing his coolness when he's with his best friend Peter. There's not much to say about him being the Green Goblin as the fight scenes were short, but I guess he can carry his role onto the next installment since he started it very well.

I also liked that they shed light to what happened to Richard Parker (not the tiger :glee: ) and Peter uncovering his father's secret. Remarkable as well are the visual effects much more in the Time Square. Electro's powers give the needed spectacle for the movie. Also Stan Lee's usual cameo in the film.

The not-so-good thing is that the villains didn't have much time for character development. Electro himself, is a very shallow villain, the birthday boy with no friends who idolizes Spider-man becomes a monster and it's not his fault. He doesn't have his own agenda except that he wants to be like Spidey, his idol, and he wants to be needed. That's enough for the kids though. Then there's Harry Osborn, Spidey's own Lex Luthor and suddenly there's Rhino, who had a very short appearance that his presence was hardly felt.
He just looked like a filler for a closing scene.
Spider-man didn't really have a central villain, and is too busy dealing with many things. His father's secret, his relationship with Gwen, his aunt May's own grievances, the three villains, his friendship with Harry, Gwen's father haunting him, and him saving the world. These are compressed in the movie which feels like there's no time to absorb everything.

But after all the blunders, the movie redeems itself as the movie that is loyal to the comic, a superhero that is more human than invincible, and a leading lady that thinks for herself and has definitely left a mark. The closing scenes were touching as you symphatize with Peter and at the same time makes you look forward to the next movie with closing scenes leading up to it.

Dubbed as McConaughey's best work to date - winning him an Oscar no less. His rendition as the homophobic Texan who became the unlikely hero of the gay community was flawless – it’s like the male Sophie – luminescent, one of a kind and truly singular.

The film centers on Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey,) suffering from AIDS and tried a way to improve his health by taking unapproved pharmaceutical drugs and illegally smuggled them for his fellow AIDS patient. The Dallas Buyers Club was the buyer’s club that Woodroof established with the help of unlikely partners - speaking of partner, Jare Leto who played the pre-op transgender Rayon was equally exceptional providing tenderness to McConaughey’s obnoxious yet effective approach to Woodroof (winning him an Oscar as well)

This film clad in the ever so colorful life of homosexuals and people affected by AIDS established a strong balance of fact and fiction during the years when the combat against the disease was still unrecognized and was ostracized by the society.

Dallas Buyers Club is a biopic that lends its ears and opens its heart to the audience especially to the ones suffering from the disease for it supplemented a straightforward approach and presented what’s really happening back then and even now which keeps people fighting for their rights and fighting for their lives.

To be honest, I wasn't really impressed with the first movie, so I was really reluctant to see this one. But after being annoyed by my 12-year-old cousin countless times, I finally gave in. I thought this was better the first, but now, it kind of felt like Sam Raimi's Spiderman 3. It had too many stories to tell, that it felt like everything was rushed. I love Andrew Garfield as the friendly neighborhood hero because he seems to exude this youth that I didn't really feel when I watched Tobey Maguire. And I love Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey. She seems to be one of the few sources of light in this film, that whenever she is on the screen with Garfield, it feels as though I was watching a separate romantic comedy. I thought that Jamiue Foxx's Electro had so much potential, but wasn't given enough time to shine. A similar situation also goes on with Dane DeHaan's Harry Osbourne, as he was perfect for the angsty role.

A movie about a lonely writer who falls in love with a computer operating system. The plot sounds very shallow but it is a very deep and even a depressing movie. It is thought-provoking, which makes you question the future of relationships, because it's very likely to happen. (Although I wish to never live in that era.)

Some scenes look really weird and disturbing. It's really pathetic to fall in love with an OS and even make love to it. I cringed at the idea of them getting a surrogate ‘real person’ while doing the thing.

I think the film wants to tell you what technology can do, how it ruins real-life interactions, its impact on people's lives. It makes you realize the value of human relationships, and that it is silly and stupid to fall in love with a freaking computer system because it is not a person. It shows how far technology can go, how people are eventually sucked into this labyrinth of the internet. And that it is not very impossible to become a reality in the future, which is a scary thing.

Spike Jonze is commendable for creating such a unique idea that is very timely for today's fast-paced world. Amazing performances by Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore and Scarlett Johansson as Samantha, the OS' voice. Seriously, this movie got me thinking after I watched it, it is a truly groundbreaking film.

    Review:
"Insidious" is a horror film directed by James Wan (from the movie Saw). It is about the Lambert couple and their child that went on a comatose for an unknown reason. They asked for psychic help and found out that their son unknowingly did some astral projection and lost at a place called “The Further”.

My two cents on this movie, first, the storyline itself is interesting. It consists of many twists and thrills especially at the end of the movie. Unlike other horror films, this movie has its own different way of scaring its viewers, not the typical screaming and shouting and sudden popping out of ghosts and the likes, because I am not a fan of horror movies at all. Hehe. All in all it is definitely a good watch for viewers.

"Zombadings... is one of the highly successful Filipino indie comedy films that also garnered commercial success in recent years. The film is about a young boy named Remington who loves poking fun on gay men (transvestite in general) until he insulted an old transvestite who put a curse on him stating that he’ll turn gay once he grow up. Without realizing it, on his 21st birthday - Remington knew something changed because he suddenly could speak gay-lingo without realizing it and was turning gay in the midst of gay men being hunted by a serial killer in their town.

My critique for this film would stay the same, after reviewing it the first time and watching it in several occasions. At the time,( and I think up to now) I loved how the fresh the idea / concept was. I'm also happy that they opt to use gay lingos and subtitles for that matter. It's much funnier that way and more relatable. I guess the only downside of it is the ending because somewhere in there, it got lost and overall, the film was strong as it delivered some good laughs, great acting and something new to the Filipino film industry.

It took some time for me to decide what action film I like the most. Re-watching some of them actually helped me in picking Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The fact that it still kicks tremendous amounts of ass 20 years after its release makes it an obvious choice.

Arnold Schwarzenegger comes back to play the generally still, silent and emotionless cyborg sent back from the future. This time, however, he’s the good guy. His purpose is to stop the more advanced borg-villain who’s programmed to kill young John Connor.

Probably one of the biggest reasons why Terminator 2 is considered as one of the most timeless action films is its strong acting cast. Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton definitely stand out. Arnold, one of the most iconic action stars, fully embraces the role and makes it his own. Hamilton remains one of the stronger female action stars as she portrays the role of Sarah Connor. She triumphs in giving viewers a character we truly care and root for. Recognition also needs to be given to Robert Patrick as the deadly T-1000. His fight scene with Schwarzenegger towards the end is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the film.

Armed with witty dialogue and smart narrative, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a compelling and engaging action film that is a massive delight to watch.

This is like an old-school, popcorn thriller with THE Liam Neeson in it. I agree with some that this is definitely no Taken although it reminds me of it. Liam's role is so much like Bryan Mills. Here, he is Bill Marks, an air marshall who receives a text form an unknown sender threatening that someone will die on the plane unless he transfers a certain amount to his account.

Liam Neeson alone is the reason I watched this movie. He carries this movie all throughout. Julianne Moore's role could've been meatier than just Liam's seatmate. The pacing is great, it makes you play detective role and keeps you guessing. The text message thing was fun, too. I actually had a great time watching, guessing, and anticipating what happens next. Everyone is a suspect, even the pilot, the stewardess, everyone.

It's been awhile since I've watched a good airplane action flick since Con Air and Air Force One. The movie is not perfect but is highly engaging. It's good for those who need their action fix and want to pass the time.

    The Other Woman
    2014
    Comedy
    7.5/10

The Other Woman tells the story of three women: a wife, and two of her husband's mistresses, who attempt to bring her husband down.

During the start of the movie, you'd think it was some typical rom-com: man meets woman, they fall in love, you know, the works. But, once Carly (Cameron Diaz) figures out that Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has a wife, things go downhill from there. His wife, Kate (Leslie Mann), eventually pushes her way into Carly's life and they become friends. After, they stumble into another one of his mistresses, Amber (Kate Upton), who also in a very short while makes her way in the group. The three of them, who Carly refers as The Wife, The Lawyer and The Boobs have decided to team up and bring him down in even the most hilarious ways possible.

When I got to the middle part of the movie, there were some key scenes that reminded me of the 2006 film, John Tucker Must Die; plus, some parts seem too corny for me. But other than that, I thought the movie was a bucket load of laughs. Nicki Minaj was a scene-stealer, playing Carly's assistant (where her line, Selfish people live longer is a social media favorite). Diaz was in her genre, Upton was like the ray of sunshine in the film. And I never thought I could love Leslie Mann even more. I loved the chemistry between the three leads, and since a friendship like that between women once involved with the same man is very unlikely in real life, they made it seem believable.

Overall, if you want to laugh, put this movie on your list.

Welcome to Hotel Transylvania! This is where monsters go on vacation to get away from pesky human beings. Count Dracula is one busy person these days. Aside from running this luxurious resort for his monster friends, he has a somewhat-teenage daughter to take care of. And we all know what 118-year-old teeny vampires are like. But, just as everyone has settled in, an uninvited guest shows up. The Count believes he’s out to make trouble, but the birthday vamp thinks otherwise. History suggests that the human race is not to be trusted. But maybe young Jonathan has something more in store for them – perhaps, a surprising lesson or two along the way.

Plot-wise, this is closely similar to The Croods that banks on a father-daughter love story at its heart. An overprotective Dracula realizes that he must let not-so-young Mavis spread her bat wings and fly on her own. Bursting with great ideas, Hotel Transylvania is a fun family movie that finds comedy and heart in the midst of the monster-mash of characters. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Forever Young stars Mel Gibson who played a test pilot named Daniel McCormick. The date was 1939 and he’s got the world in his hands except the courage to propose to his girlfriend (Isabel Glasser). When tragedy struck that took his girlfriend away, Daniel didn’t know where to turn to. Hence, when the opportunity came that would let him avoid the future - Daniel offered himself to undergo a top secret cryogenic experiment and found himself waking up after about fifty years. It's a unfamiliar world for him but it was still the same feeling for the man who's searching for himself and his one true love.

I guess what I loved about this film is how Gibson keeps you glued all through out no matter how weak the whole structure of the film was. The story fluctuates and didn't build up rendering the film anti-climactic but it was still romantic. It's all about love honey.lol. Having said that, the film will reduce you to a mere hopeless romantic - someone who may finally believe that love truly knows no time.

This movie has been one of my favorites ever since I got to watch it a couple of years ago. The Swedish movie tells the story of Oskar, who is being bullied by his peers in school. Later, he meets Eli, who he has a connection with. Eli makes him realize that whenever he is being bullied, he should hit back. When he discovers her deep, dark secret, he is forced to make a choice.

The two leads, Lina Leandersson (Eli) and K?re Hedebrant (Oskar), are really good, that they carry the film really well. The film was beautifully dark and eerie, and the music really complements well with the movie's atmosphere.
