    Pompeii-poster.jpg

Every disaster movie that comes out after 1998 seems to follow the mold of Titanic. Pompeii is no different. It takes the love story of a gladiator (Kit Harrington with gorgeous, gorgeous abs) and the daughter of a Roman official (Emily Browning) and sets it against the destruction of Pompeii. While the film has great promise in depicting yet another disaster, it fails because everything this movie is, we have already seen in Gladiator, 300, Pearl Harbor and yes, Titanic. If there is any redeeming factor in the movie, it's gotta be Kit Harrington's abs.

    Saving Mr. Banks
    2014
    Family
    7.5/10

Saving Mr. Banks is the story of what inspired writer P.L. Travers to write Mary Poppins, what happened during the production of its movie adaptation, and the lengths that Walt Disney went to keep the difficulty stubborn writer on board with the movie to keep the promise he made to two of his daughters years ago.

I thought that the amazing Emma Thompson had played P.L. Travers beautifully. She portrayed the role with such a tough demeanor but through it you could see the vulnerable, loving young girl that the writer once was. Tom Hanks, despite thge movie not being all about his character, played Walt Disney convincingly. It was as if I was watching Mr. Disney himself on screen. Colin Farrell had a low-key but important role as the writer's caring but troubled father.

Overall, the movie had it's sad moments that left me tearing up, but at the end of the film, if you loved Mary Poppins as a child, you'll have a smile on your face.

    Review:

As a fan of the original Spiderman films, it was in my own volition to not watch the reboot. Plus, I always thought that Andrew Garfield was miscast as the new "friendly neighbor" superhero.
After giving The Amazing Spiderman 1 a try, I'm still not convinced. Thinking that it was still so early to do a reboot but hey, am glad they did because The Amazing Spiderman 2 converted me :hiya:

I thought that the movie was done marvelously, story-wise, especially the way they give importance to Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) character. Stone was actually great in the first installment and she did well on this one too! She really did bring out the best of Garfield. Their chemistry is way way better than that of Tobey Mcguire and Kirsten Dunst.

I still think that Garfield is better off as the masked spidey. His acting as Peter Parker is a bit annoying for me, it's somewhat unnaturally geeky. However, like I said, he's good as Parker's alter.

Graphics is excellent too even without the use of "Spidey Cam". Just didn't like the way they did the matrix-rip-off-bullets-dodging scene. I also liked the part where Electro (Jamie Foxx) was realizing his inner villain, as he hears the voices in his head in a chant-like way! *okay*

One major thing that I think is the downside of this film, was the fact that there's a Dark Knightish element on Peter Parker's quest to find the truth about his folks. C'mon, giving depth to Spidey's back-story doesn't mean it has to be that dark.

Overall, TASM2 is better than the first and changed my stand on the reboot. But still love Spiderman 1 the most. :glee:

    Movie Title: The Shawshank Redemption
    Year: 1994
    Genre: Drama
    Rating: 10 out of 10

    ShawshankRedemptionMoviePoster.jpg

I think this is one of the greatest movies of all time and has become one of my favorites. I actually didn't know anything about this movie before, I just got curious about the great reviews it has. But once I saw it, it definitely left a mark.

I could actually put this in multiple categories in this challenge like, favorite classic movie, because it will never get old. It's one of those films that make such an impact and that you will never forget. It has aged so well that IMDb ranked it as No. 1, and has a rating of 98% in Rotten Tomatoes. I could also include this in favorite quote, character, movie based on a book, a movie I wish more people would see (but it's not possible :glee: ). But ultimately, this has been my favorite drama movie ever because it made me cry and I don't usually cry at movies.

This movie teaches us to never give up despite of hopeless situations. A spiritually moving film with a simple yet riveting story. The feeling of redemption in the end is amazing. I felt Andy's struggles. I cannot imagine the patience it took for him to get out of that unfortunate situation. He was beaten, his hope crushed, but he never wavered. He never surrendered. Hope gets people everytime, and this movie proved to me that I shouldn't give up because there is always hope, it is a good thing and it never dies.

Morgan Freeman gave such a great acting and narration (as usual) and Tim Robbins is brilliant as Andy Dufresne.

    Quotes:

Andy: Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Red: Sometimes it makes me sad, though... Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

Andy: Get busy living, or get busy dying.

Red: All I want is to be back where things make sense. Where I won't have to be afraid all the time.

The plot is quite similar to the Final Destination series where the characters get killed according to order. Only the their predicament was not because of their supposed death initially got prevented by premonition but because someone's death was reversed by a faith healer and the they were the ones paying for it. Quite a cliche, but still somehow works for me, because I wanted to know how the mystery of the curse started and how it can be prevented or stopped. Some scenes were scary, somehow, yes. I just don't like the chameleon eyes when the characters get possessed xP Their appearance were still quite scary but I think the film makers could have used replaced that eye idea because it was a little funny and distracting LOL. It's also annoying that most of the time, the color that Seth (Vilma Santos) was wearing was also the same shade that's worn by most of the characters, hahaha.

Still, Filipino horror movies has a long way to go to match with other Asian Horror films.

    6.5/10

First of all, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe had amazing chemistry. Also, I thought Sarah Michelle Gellar nailed the role of twisted and cruel Kathryn. Second, the film is too dirty for my taste, I guess, as it had too much sexual references and too much blackmailing, that you can barely see the light in this movie. The plot was too stretched, like it had too many stories to tell, that the viewer could lose sight to what the story really is. If you're not into the type of films that are just dirty for the sake of being dirty, then maybe you should skip this.

    The_King_and_the_Clown_movie_poster.jpg

King and the Clown is an adaptation from a Korean stage play called "Yi" or "You" about a king from Joseon Dynasty and the two street clowns whose unexpected fate led them to the rather tumultuous life of King Yeosan. This was actually a recommendation from a Korean friend and we even reviewed it in school. On my previous critique, (which I'm afraid would stay the same) I thought the film lacks narrative. The back story of one of the clowns (Gong Li) was very much lacking (which I thought was necessary) that the film ended tragically and I can't help but get pissed. The only saving grace of the film was Gam Wu Seong (Gong Li's character) who gave a stirring rendition of a hurt, loss and ambitious street performer. Costume and set designs were exemplary as usual and that breathtaking cinematography was just *gasp*. I just wished thought that they elaborated more on each character because it could've been an exceptional film.

Review: I just recently watched this movie because a friend of mine posted that she cried because of this movie. That night, I needed to cry. All I could say is that this movie is a good movie about family and the people that we love.

This movie is top-billed by four equally good actresses playing four different sisters who decided to dissuade their younger brother from marrying his girlfriend whom he just met. This movie is carried by impressive characterizations of the four sisters. The actresses are really good as they brought out the tears from my eyes

A lot of people think that this movie just wanted to earn money because of Locsin, Gonzaga, Alonzo and Magdayao. Take my word for it: this movie is good.

    Movie Title: Bruce Almighty
    Year: 2003
    Genre: Comedy
    Rating: 9 out of 10

    bruce-almighty-official-poster.jpg

The story is about Bruce who had an unfortunate career as a reporter, and began questioning God about his fate. I loved this film because it is one of a kind, rarely there is a comedy movie of religious nature. And also, I find Jim Carrey's humor over the top, but in this movie it's just alright and he is perfect for his role.

Bruce became angry at God because of his series of misfortunes, which made God (played by Morgan Freeman) appear to Him. He gives Bruce his powers so that Bruce will realize how difficult God's job is. The events that followed are hilarious, it is fascinating what God can do. But Bruce began using His powers for his personal gain. Bruce used his power to take his GF (Jennifer Aniston) back and even get revenge from his competitor, Evan (Steve Farrell) who beat him for promotion. He controlled Evan's teleprompter on live TV and his speech, shaming him on national TV. God said Bruce should not control the free will of people, and he should help them on their needs. He made a system by email of answering peoples prayers, but got so tired and answered them all Yes. His actions took a toll and created chaos, even almost loses his GF. Eventually he stops using his powers and began helping people without it. He realized his wrongdoings and asked God to remove his powers and started living as a normal person again.

This is not only funny but a feel-good movie. It's not slapstick over-the-top funny, but an endearing one, even touching towards the end. Jim Carrey is suprisingly not annoying in this movie, and Morgan with his commanding voice fits the role perfectly as the Almighty.

    Genre: Epic, Romance, Drama
    Director: James Cameron
    Rating: 10/10

    Titanic_poster.jpg

    Review:

Much has been said about this epic movie and it's indeed the movie of the century (IMHO). Breaking world records since 1997, Titanic changed the way disaster movies are made nowadays.

After re-watching it over the weekend. Here are 5 reasons why I think this is one of the greatest movies of all time:
    1. They impeccably recreated the ship which was constructed almost a century before the movie was even conceptualized.
    2. Cinematography is one of, if not, the finest! *okay*
    3. Acting is superb and the casting was excellent.
    4. Cameron did well on the direction that this launched the careers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
    5. Finally, this is not just an epic-love story but a history in itself.

This depiction of the mighty ship going under is so much larger than life and I feel this is the most magnificent part of the movie. Just for that reason alone, Titanic is a movie not just to be seen, but to be experienced!

Spiderman is my most favorite superhero, and I love the franchise. However, this movie feels like I have been watching Spiderman 3 (of Raimi) all over again. They had too much stories that they want to be told. I still love the chemistry between Garfield and Stone, and that was the best part of the movie. I was not completely sold on Electro as a villain, I feel like there is something wrong with his characterization. Harry Osborn on the other hand was played good by Dane DeHaan. I wish we had seen more of Peter Parker and Harry Osborn's friendship. Otherwise, his revenge makes a good plot for the next movie.

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    2014
    Action
    8.5/10

Being a huge fan of Marvel's cinematic universe, I could say that this movie surpassed my expectations. The scenes were superb and I was happy to see Chris Evans once again portray the old-fashioned Steve Rogers. Anthony Mackie was lovable as Captain America's right-hand man, Falcon (or Sam Wilson, whichever you prefer to call him). Sebastian Stan was perfection as The Winter Soldier (who is just a plain mean brainwashed jerk who is really Steve's old bestie, Bucky Barnes). Another thing I couldn't really stop noticing was Natasha Romanoff's arrow necklace. What I really liked about Scarlett Johansson's character Black Widow in this movie was that the audience are now getting to discover how she really is when she's not on missions.

This movie is really worth to watch even if you're not a fan of superhero films.

    The_Amazing_Spiderman_2_poster.jpg

Continuing the highly successful reboot of the iconic superhero franchise - the sequel of 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man saw Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) childhood after being orphaned by his parents and was left to the care of his aunt and uncle. He also ended her relationship with Gwen (Emma Stone) to keep her safe.
Here we see Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) becoming the CEO of Oscorp after his father Norman (Chris Cooper) died. We also have Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) whom Peter saved once and became obsessed with our superhero.
Somehow, it stopped there. Its too boxed for a sequel going around Peter and Gwen's relationship to the impending attack of Max and Harry. The plot wasn't much and it was too damn long if I'm being honest (it's over two hours.)

The one thing that I liked about it is the way they humanized Peter Parker (almost the same way Clak Kent felt vulnerably close to the audience in Man Of Steel). I've to admit though that I'm not really digging Andrew Garfield as spidey (or perhaps I'm just unfairly comparing him with Tobey Maguire) but he's okay I guess. He's got this charming thing about him. Emma Stone of the other hand was LOVE. (I'm truly biased LOL) I just love this girl. But hey, adoration aside - Gwen's character isn't much that it's almost comical to think about her but she's very easy in the eye (Emma that is).

Did anyone thought how creepy DeHaan' was as Harry? I think the word's sinister but not so. I don't know what to make of him. I almost wished that James Franco's brother took over the role. But being in between creepy and sinister could be a good thing right?

Foxx character though, was simply out of place. It's just lacking any back story and was just a poor excuse to abuse it's CGI potentials.

In the scope of things, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was an improvement from its predecessor. It was something a non-Spiderman fan would "perhaps" appreciate although I'm not really sure if they'd be patient enough to sit through it till the end.

I've lost track of how many times I've seen this movie. I have an 8-yr old cousin at home who watches this whenever it's on TV, and I always end up watching it with him. Not complaining, though. Wreck-it Ralph is highly entertaining, and appeals to kids and adults alike. Great characters, along with a heartwarming story about friendship and what it means to be a hero, make Wreck-it Ralph a worthy watch. It's a visual treat as well. I wouldn't mind watching this with my cousin again and again.

Great story, nice almost life-like animation, I felt hungry after watching it.

Remy is a rat who loves to cook and dreams of becoming a chef like his idol, Gusteau. He befriends Linguini, a garbage boy, who doesn't know anything about cooking. Together they rebuild the restaurant that the late chef Gusteau once owned.

"Anyone can cook" says Gusteau, the best chef in France. It's like saying anyone can reach for their dreams, no matter how small you think you are. In the movie, a rat became a chef, which is an irony. Rats are lowly animals who thrive in dirty places. But it's the rat who creates amazing dishes in this movie.

What's also commendable is the great animation, as in really great. The lighting is bright, the details, the food... it's just definitely one of the best animations I've ever seen.

It makes me dream of Paris and eat in a restaurant after. I think it's one of Pixar's greatest animated films.

"But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

In this Die Hard sequel, John McClane travels to Moscow, Russia to reach out to his stubborn son. Jack McClane turns out to be an undercover CIA agent himself working on a top-secret mission. When things start to go south, father and son team up against your typical suspects.

This isn’t your usual Die Hard movie. Yep, there’s the customary over-the-top action scenes and massive destruction, but not the charm and wit that most people love about the franchise. Bruce Willis doesn’t seem like the old, badass John McClane. Jai Courtney did okay, I guess, in the acting department, but his interaction with Bruce was mostly flat. The plot is also so absurd (Hello, Chernobyl!) that I disregarded it completely.

With a weak storyline and cheesy script, and minus the essential elements that made the previous Die Hard films remarkable, A Good Day to Die Hard is a total disappointment to the franchise.

    (500) Days Of Summer
    2009
    Romance
    8/10

As its tagline says, "This is not a love story, this is a story about love." It makes the viewers wonder what to expect from this film, but once you finish this movie, you'll find out that you'll know what to expect just from the title itself.

    (500) Days Of Summer tells the story of Tom, who I dare say is a hopeless romantic, and the five hundred days Summer (who wasn't a believer of true love) was in his life: from the day he saw her until the day he finally moved on from her.

I loved the movie because, it definitely wasn't the usual, clich?-ish romantic comedy storyline that went boy-meets-girl-and-they-fell-in-love-then-they-overcome-obstacles-then-finally-lived-happily-ever-after. This movie was a little bit more real. I mean, how many people have fallen for somebody who didn't feel the same way about them? Almost everybody, right? And how many movies have been made about that situation wherein both parties are the main focus of the story? That's what made the movie really relatable.

Aside from that, I think Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had some serious chemistry, despite playing characters who are in a one-sided love affair.

    Title: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

'The Amazing Spider-Man ' swings anew on the big screen with an unprecedented level of action, humor and emotion.

    0001_ASM21_poster.jpg

Atleast, in its franchise, Marc Webb's Spider-Man rises above its predecessors as it attempts to separate itself from the past film outings. Webb resorts to overstuffing the movie with exciting high-voltage villains and action-packed CGi-effects bombarded scenes. It's hard to conclude though, that this attempt is successful meeting its purpose. While the movie proves to be 'amazing' in some parts, most of which the quiet, short and random ones, it finds itself tangled-up within its own web of intertwining threads of subplots, that often started great but ended up unresolved with their specific issues. Moreover, it suffers more and is weighed down with its unfocused narrative and bland character developments. Dane deeHan is successful being a more villanous version of Green Goblin, but he struggles carrying out Harry Osborn above James Franco's take. His character development is fast and at some points unrealistic and forced. Jamie Foxx feels to be unsuited as Electro, and his portrayal pulls him down from the successes of his recent movies. Sally Field remains effective as the ever protective Aunt May, but her character never reaches a higher ground.

Fortunately, there is Gwen Stacy. Her charm proves to be one of the greatest assets of this film and her star never shines brighter than it does when she is with Peter. Gwen and Peter's love story is worth caring for, and that feels new in superhero movies. Their chemistry becomes the brightest element of this film, the subtle moments they shared together, ultimately saving the film from the mess that is the redundancy and tiring clich?s that this installment has. Andrew Garfield carries out playing the iconic web-slinger role successfully, his take genuine and vivid and emotionally-charged.

In main, the movie holds a heavier weight of genuine and heart-breaking emotions than its predecessor, its action and drama more satisfying and compelling. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, struggles to deliver a more profound and solid storyline, but nonetheless, triumphs in offering a spectacular ensemble of stellar cast. It comes out victorious as far as sound and emotions are concerned, and top-notch CGI effects, too, is a huge step up from the original trilogy. Overall, this movie is good and it serves optimism on what better things to happen in the franchise's next chapter.

For A Lost Soldier is a 1992 Dutch film based on the autobiographical novel by ballet dancer and choreographer Rudi Van Dantzig. It is the tender story of the bond between Jeroem (Maarten Smit,) a young boy from Amsterdam during the World War 2 and a Canadian soldier named Walt (Andrew Kelley) who helped liberate the Nazi-invaded country.

Since the arrival of the Canadian troops, Jeroem found himself somewhat attracted to the young soldier and the latter have also shown interest to the young boy. Jeroem according to Walt is so “effing special” and both found themselves always together and even had a subtle, sweet sexual relationship. (although this was actually a bit disturbing in a way because obviously, Jeroem's a minor which didn't sit well with some of the audience)

The scenes between the boy and the soldier were very romantic that I find myself dreading once they get caught. It's too bad because the ending was anti-climactic but you'd be happy about it somehow. It was based on a true story and I'm hoping that somehow, they got together at last - with Jeroem finally reuniting with his lost soldier.
