Fajardo making sure he'll be ready for much-anticipated duel with Slaughter

PETRON big man June Mar Fajardo hasn't faced top pick rival Greg Slaughter in a league game since they battled each other inside the court in Cebu four years ago.

Fajardo, however, is making sure he'll be ready the next time they meet.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore center admitted he has no firm grasp on how big Slaughter has improved since they squared off in the 2009 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Finals between University of Cebu and University of Visayas.

But no matter how good this season's top pick overall has become, Fajardo has made it clear - without sounding cocky - that he, too, is preparing for the much-anticipated battle of the giants.

“Di ko pa masabi kasi di pa kami nagharap uli sa game talaga," said Fajardo, the No. 1 pick of last season's rookie draft. "Basta pinaghahandaan ko na 'yun.”

Although he has made giant strides in his rookie season to become of the the league's most dominant big men, Fajardo also pointed out that he is not sitting around waiting for the showdown with Slaughter.

The soft-spoken native of Pinamungahan, Cebu said he's also getting good advice.

“Di ko lang alam kung may ibang moves pa siya pero ang sabi lang sa akin na ang pag-stop kay Slaughter, dapat daw ipalabas siya sa comfort zone niya,” Fajardo added.

Fajardo’s game has improved dramatically during the tailend of the season, as can be gleaned from his averages of 18.7 points and 14.7 rebounds during the Governors Cup Finals against San Mig Coffee.

The battle of the league’s two tallest centers take place on Christmas Day as the Boosters take on the Kings at the Mall of Asia Arena.

  • i have not seen slaughter play but if he is as slow as the previous posts claimed then fajardo can stick to him even on perimeter to eliminate his threat from the outside. maybe its about time danny i teaches his apprentice how to shoot from the outside and utilize a ball-fake,jab-step, etc to get around or pass-by slower defenders. basically a taller version of himself.

Not bad for Slaughter. Certainly there's so much room for improvement for him but we like what we're seeing.

Slaughter was very good, considering his touches were limited and still trying to feel his way around. I like his soft touch and nose for the ball. Sanggalang didn't do too bad either. Very good showing by both rookies given the huge expectations and pressure.

Initially I thought Junemar would wipe the floor with Slaughter since nung pinapanood ko si Greg sa Ateneo medyo nalalambutan ako sa kanya for a big man but boy has he improved. I was actually impressed when I saw him play yesterday.

Nice game by Greg Slaughter. started out slow but when he got comfortable, everything went well. His size alone was a big advantage. He also has a nifty floater and who could stop that??? Even guards are hard to stop, what more for a 7 footer.

Here is an article of JuneMars first game in comparison

Back to school: Freshman Fajardo learns hard lessons in Petron loss to Rain or Shine

Petron Blaze top overall pick June Mar Fajardo came home with nine points, 12 rebounds, and a cut on his forehead after the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters handed the Boosters a 102-86 beatdown on Wednesday night.

Despite showing a raw game, Fajardo started the game and provided a tough presence on the low block against the shorter Rain or Shine frontline, which battled using its trademark physicality.

Blazers coach Olsen Racela gave his rookie a grade of seven out of 10.

“He has to work on a lot of things, particularly in playing tougher in the PBA,” said Racela. “Sinasabi niya sa akin, nauunahan daw siyang hawakan ng kalaban, pero yun nga ang dapat, kailangan he has to show toughness. Unahan niya na agad yung mga kalaban niya.”

Petron team consultant Rajko Toroman said Fajardo’s lack of seasoning is showing.

“He never had real basketball. His only real basketball came six months ago and he didn’t have much exposure,” said the Serbian coach. Fajardo played for the San Miguel Beermen in the ABL after suiting up for University of Cebu in college.

Toroman, the former coach of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, believes Fajardo will take about two years before becoming a dominant force.

“There are a lot of tough players. He needs to toughen up and work on his game better. But first game isn’t a gauge. It takes time before the guys, including Fajardo, to get used to the system.”

Fajardo said he was surprised about the physicality of the game of Rain or Shine, as the frontliners caught him flat footed and out of position a lot of times.

Although very serviceable center si Greg with his height and soft touch I doubt he'll be as dominant as June Mar was by the time he reaches the third conference.

Talk about walang bilib, it seems that you're following suit to Toroman's remarks a year ago, this time, with Slaughter. See Fiba-Asia 2013.

Greg did well in his first game, and with continued training and honing of his skills, he will get better. Same thing with Junmar. While the focus will be on the two whenever BGK and Petron meet, the fans- and more importantly, Greg and Junmar- should remember that the goal is team victory, not necessarily have a better stat sheet at the end of the game.

Guilty. Makakaaverage kaya si Slaughter ng 18.7 points and 14.7 rebounds sa Finals while being the focal point of his team this season? I doubt it pero its possible. I'm just saying na sobrang ganda na ng pinakita ni Fajardo last conference pero parang pinapaboran kaagad ni Toroman yung bata niya when he has yet to show much sa laro niya. Admittedly maganda simula ni Slaughter and may yet improve.
