UE Assured Season 77 for major uaap reforms

A HIGH-ranking official of the University of the East is seeking reforms in the UAAP after a tumultuous season of “harassment” and “hate.”

UE marketing director and Red Warriors team manager Jess Tanchanco said the UAAP is beginning to lose the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie among member schools, and changes should be done to the system before it is too late.

Tanchanco didn’t specify any specific reforms but said the league should not develop “hatred” among different member schools.

“I hope that the UAAP can do some more reforms to that instead of developing hatred among different players, we also have to show love in the UAAP,” said Tanchanco during the postgame press conference after UE ended its season with a victory over University of the Philippines on Wednesday.

“UAAP is there for us to be closer together and sportsmanship should be the main objective,” said Tanchanco.

The UE team manager believes the Red Warriors were at the raw end of several controversies this season involving Charles Mammie, Lord Casajeros, and Ralf Olivares who were slapped with suspensions one after the other by UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga for separate infractions during the season.

“May mga off-the-court activities that we were affected, which is part of the game. We are not complaining,” Tanchanco said.

But Tanchanco noted the case of Mammie, who was not only slapped with suspensions but had his eligibility questioned before the start of the season.

“Si Mammie, kumbaga hulog ng langit sa UE. He came to us because he was dropped by another school. We trained him and showed that he has a good heart. But from the start, he has been harassed, maraming rules daw na wala siyang documents. Then, dalawa ang suspensions niya,” said Tanchanco.

Incidentally, UE will be hosting the league next season and Tanchanco is hoping that changes will be implemented.

“We don’t want to complain. Tapos na. We want next year, we will have a bigger UAAP and most successful, and the one where love will prevail, not hate,” said Tanchanco.

Tanchanco said they harbor no ill feelings towards the league and Loyzaga.

“Wala naman kaming sama ng loob. Nagpapasalamat kami kay commissioner sa pag-handle ng liga. Referees, mahirap mag-referee. In fairness, they are trying to be as fair as they can. But they are just human. Nobody is perfect,” said Tanchanco.

But UE assistant coach Bai Cristobal is hoping for consistency in implementing the rules on the court.

“I hope that the rules will not bend forward or backwards. I hope that maybe we can give some inputs or guidelines lalo na sa suspensions and kung hanggang saan ang blanket authority ng commissioner,” said Cristobal, a former deputy commissioner of the NCAA.

Cristobal cited a time when timeouts in between free throws were initially allowed by the league at the start of the season - then suddenly forbidden without due notice.

“Dinelete na daw. Pero that rule was given in the first and second coaches’ meeting. These are the things na we have to be consistent (about),” said Cristobal.

this is good news....but why wait until it is ue's term?....

sana hindi 'all talk'....i remember during nu's term, sabi din nila aayusin yung rules...haven't heard anything since....

it all starts with the uaap board....it's run like an old boys club...vested interest ang umiiral......no transparency!

good luck na lang sa ue and tanchangco....hope your noble intentions bear fruit!

We'll see how UE will push for the reforms that it wanted to implement next season. So far, I am hearing rumors about UE exploring the possibility of NOT tapping the SBP referees for next year given the officiating issues that emerged this year. Of course, UE must also get the concurrence of the majority of the other seven UAAP members to push for those organizational reforms.

These reforms should start within their men's basketball team.

Their team consists of hot-headed players who can't keep their cool when their season is on the line.

Well at least they're trying to start from somewhere. While maybe it's true that the team, as you claim, consists of hot-headed players and all that, they can't just sit around and see those questionable calls from the referees; dubious decision of the UAAP board; among other things, stain the integrity of the league, next season.

Perhaps it would also be helpful if some members of the team would review the implications once a coach is suspended. :naughty:

Tama ka diyan. Parang magulo ang buong sistema ng UAAP men's basketball as it is right now.
