Pistons agree to 2-year deal with Chauncey Billups

Nearly a decade after resurrecting the franchise and leading it to an NBA championship, Chauncey Billups has reached agreement on a two-year contract to return to the Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Billups, 36, hopes to finish his career where it blossomed in the glory years of the Billups-Richard Hamilton-Ben Wallace Pistons of the mid-2000s. Billups will play the part of mentor for young Detroit guard Brandon Knight, and be a rotation guard off the bench for Detroit.

Pistons general manager Joe Dumars has long regretted trading Billups to the Denver Nuggets for the expiring contract of Allen Iverson in the 2008-09 season. Now, Dumars has brought back Billups with a mandate to nurture and perform for the Pistons.

For Billups, the trade sent him to his hometown Nuggets, where he played an immense part in the maturity of Carmelo Anthony and the franchise's growth into a Western Conference finalist. For the Pistons, the loss of Billups started a spiral that eventually led to four straight non-playoff seasons. Now, Billups returns with a mandate to help Detroit's talented young core reach the postseason again under new coach Mo Cheeks.

Billups suffered a torn Achilles tendon in February of 2012 with the Los Angeles Clippers, but worked his way back to play this past season with the team. Billups is a five-time All-Star and the NBA Finals MVP for his performance in the Pistons' 2004 championship series victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

kulang na lang ibalik din si Rip Hamilton  since binitawan na siya ng Bulls :glee:

most likely, Chauncey will be a mentor to the Pistons guards, and will play off the bench.

Pistons land Brandon Jennings in sign-and-trade - reports
    July 31, 2013 6:56am

Point guard Brandon Jennings finally has a home.

The restricted free agent was acquired by the Detroit Pistons in a sign-and-trade deal with Jennings' previous team, the Milwaukee Bucks, media reports said, Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time). The terms of the deal have Jennings signing a three-year deal worth $24 million, before being shipped to Detroit in exchange for third-year guard Brandon Knight, and sophomores Viacheslav Kravtsov and Khris Middleton.

The 23-year-old Jennings was originally the 10th overall pick of the Bucks in the 2009 NBA Draft. In four seasons with the team, he posted career averages of 17.0 points (39.4 percent FG shooting, 35.4 percent 3PT shooting), 3.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.5 steals. He brought Milwaukee to the playoffs twice, in his rookie season, and last season, but they didn't get past the first round in both instances.

Knight, picked eighth in 2011, has career numbers of 13.1 points (41.0 percent FG shooting, 37.3 percent 3PT shooting), 3.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 0.8 steals. Kravtsov played 25 games in his rookie season, with averages of 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds, while Middleton put up 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds.

It is expected that another offseason signing by Detroit, returning veteran point guard Chauncey Billups, will mentor Jennings, who will also join Josh Smith, the team's other big signing.

Milwaukee on the other hand looks a lot more different from the team that got the Eastern Conference's eighth seed last season. Gone are the likes of JJ Redick, Monta Ellis, Samuel Dalembert, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Drew Gooden, replacing them with signings like OJ Mayo, Carlos Delfino, Gary Neal, Luke Ridnour and Zaza Pachulia. - AMD, GMA News

As a 9-year Pistons fan, great news ito. Finally, playoff lock na ulit.
We still have Stuckey and CharlieV's expiring as trade bait in this coming trade deadline, then playoff bound na for the coming years. I just wish na sana si Stuckey na lang ang na-move instead of Knight. :bawling:

^ yup! mas ok kung si Stuckey nalang na trade, pero andito na ... palakasin lang *** bench nito .. then ready to roll na ...

    Pistons finalize trade for Jennings
    August 1, 2013 7:07am

The Detroit Pistons completed a sign-and-trade deal for guard Brandon Jennings with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Pistons announced Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time).

The Bucks acquired guard Brandon Knight, forward Khris Middleton and center Viacheslav Kravtsov from the Pistons in the exchange.

"We are pleased to welcome Brandon to the Pistons family," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said. "We believe Brandon's talent and skill set will complement the core group of players we have assembled on our roster in a positive way.

"We also want to thank Brandon Knight, Khris Middleton and Slava Kravtsov for their contributions to our organization. We appreciate everything they have done for our team both on and off the court and we wish them the best moving forward."

The 23-year-old Jennings' new contract will be for three years and more than $24 million, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

An unrestricted free agent, Jennings was seeking a big contract but appeared to be passed over until Detroit stepped up. The Pistons have been busy putting together an offseason makeover in an attempt to end their four-year playoff absence, acquiring Jennings, Josh Smith, Chauncey Billups and Luigi Datome.

Jennings averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 assists in 80 games last season for Milwaukee. He was selected by the Bucks in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft.

Knight, picked eighth overall by the Pistons in the 2011 NBA Draft, averaged 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 75 games last season.

Middleton averaged 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 27 games and Kravtsov, in his first season with the Pistons, averaged 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds in 25 games. - Reuters

    New-look Pistons eyeing playoff bid
    October 1, 2013 2:42pm

AUBURN HILLS — The Detroit Pistons have missed the playoffs four straight seasons, and the stakes are raised now after a busy offseason.

Detroit signed forward Josh Smith and guard Chauncey Billups and also traded for point guard Brandon Jennings.

Add holdovers such as big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, and there's plenty of potential for improvement.

So the Pistons have little use for all those cliches about taking the season one game at a time. This group is already eyeing the postseason.

"I don't expect anything less than the playoffs," said forward Josh Smith, who signed with Detroit in the offseason. "We're a confident bunch. You see it all over everybody's faces — the need to win."

"If you see our starting lineup, there's nothing but athletes," Drummond said at media day Monday. "We're going to run a lot of guys out of the gym, is what it looks like."

That's the best-case scenario. There's also the possibility the Pistons won't become a cohesive unit after so many changes. Detroit made a coaching switch after going 29-53, bringing in Maurice Cheeks to replace Lawrence Frank.

"Everything is new here," Cheeks said. "No disrespect to anybody else, but everything is new here. Habits are created starting tomorrow."

Smith says he's looking forward to playing with Drummond, the athletic big man whom Detroit took in the first round in the 2012 draft. Smith, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 17.5 points for Atlanta last season.

The most important addition might be Jennings, though. The Pistons gave up Brandon Knight — another recent first-round pick — to get him.

Jennings is talented but a bit unpredictable. He shot 40 percent from the field last season, easily the worst mark in the NBA for any player who took more than 1,200 shots. Of course, he also averaged a career-high 6.5 assists per game.

"Him and I just had a conversation," said Cheeks, himself a former point guard. "I just told him I'm going to try and help him with the game itself. He's a scoring point guard, which I think most point guards are today — they are scoring point guards.

"You don't want to restrict the ability of someone like him being able to score the ball, but he has to be able to run this basketball team."

Jennings didn't say much about that talk with his new coach, but he clearly understands the pressure he'll face.

"I'm not going to share what he said, but it was actually a very good meeting," Jennings said. "He said the team goes as far as I go."

If the Pistons start winning, it would go a long way toward boosting the team's sagging attendance. But it's hard to anticipate what roles certain players will be in.

Billups, for example, will surely be a mentor to Jennings, but he'll also compete for playing time in the backcourt. Rodney Stuckey returns after averaging 11.5 points per game last season.

The Pistons also added Italian star Luigi Datome, who could provide some extra outside shooting.

This is one team that might be worth watching even in the preseason — just to see who is playing in what spot and how often.

"This is going to be a competitive camp," Cheeks said. "I think this is what training camp is all about — being able to compete and figure out who plays where, how many minutes guys play." - AP
