20130615: Return to Batangas Racing Circuit

The first time I went to Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) I had set a personal best lap time of 2:20.8. I thought I couldn't improve on it.

Three years later...

I just smashed it by three seconds with a 2:17.65.

Engine and suspension are still stock. All I changed since the last outing were lighter wheels and grippier Michelin Pilot Sport 3 rubber. For a 1.3L-engined car that makes just 82 HP off its crankshaft, three seconds is a huge gain.

This was how I did it...while overtaking a few Evos and STis in the process. Enjoy.

Pretty good man! Especially since our jazz is 1.3 stock car. What rims are you using?

    Thanks.

My wheels are SSR Type Ms, 15x6.5 4x100 +45mm offset. Very light at 11 lb each.

Here's a chrome set with center caps.

Your tyres are r15 195/55 or 215/55? Or are you running 50's?

  • Tires play a huge role in racing. Read somewhere in F1 racing, by level of importance:

    -aerodynamics
    -suspension, tires
    -engine

Some people would contest this hirearchy, but I guess in F1 shaving of time in milliseconds na sila nagtatalo.

So, you'll give Carlos a run for his money the next time around? ;)

Around how much nowadays is your budget dent for a trackday?

Nah. Mr. Anton and his crazy green CRX are both too much of monsters for me and Aibo to come within sniffing distance of. :p His car is basically an engine, a chassis, suspension and wheels at this point - very light and ridiculously fast.

Thanks. No real event, just a walk-in trackday with a few friends. FiT-Concept.PH isn't even a car club per se, just a Facebook group where everyone who drives a Jazz, City or Fit is welcome.

Damage was PhP2,000 for an entire day's running. Great thing was it didn't rain at all.

^Hehehe... i remember your vid at Clark where he passed you as if you were waiting for your burgers at a McDonalds drive-thru. :D

Time to get a new suspension combo perhaps? How's the balance of your Jazz versus the current model?

P2,000 is pretty good. Makes me want to try too but I don't think I have a suitable vehicle. :(

That was on my really slow in-lap. He approached me on the final complex where letting people pass is very tough, so I decided not to impede him by going off-track and driving through the grass.

We were apologizing to each other afterward. A good man, Mr. Anton.

I'm not sure I see the point of changing my suspension. I still daily-drive the car so lowering springs aren't practical when I already scrape on tall humps as it is. Aibo still rotates around corners quite well and the tires definitely helped. That said I might be quite close to the limits of the stock suspension. What Aibo really needs is PHWOAR!

What makes you think my car's a suitable vehicle? Really it's just another manual-equipped Jazz you can buy second-hand. All I did was give it a little more stick, a little more brake, and maintain it properly. A "suitable vehicle" in this context is just one that you maintain well, no leaking fluids.

My running "theme" the past four years is that anyone in any car/vehicle can take to the track and have a good time. With practice, you can get good laptimes too. I know people who've tracked their CR-Vs.

On paper my Jazz is usually the weakest car in attendance when I attend Circuit Showdown events. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm the slowest though. I've won third place in Time Attack Bracket F at Clark International Speedway last year (Round 8).

After four years of trackdays, I am more acutely aware of what not to do on public roads because I know the limits of my car and my driving. In this sense, trackdays are actually the best driver's education you can get, because you have a controlled environment (no pedestrians and buses to jockey with) to explore your skill and your car's capabilities.

^I also know someone who used to track his old-school diesel pickup and even a Patrol Safari. :D

More power? How about the basic bolt-ons to begin with? But darn the good ones will still cost you some.

Even with a bone-stock vehicle, as long as it's in good condition, you can still have lots of fun and learn a lot about your driving skill on a closed track. You don't need all the hp and whatever mods like what I see with some guys who spend so much in modifying their rides for "track" use kuno even before setting foot on one. Let alone spending for lessons. I had a friend who was the butt of jokes before when his EG Civic, with a new B16 transplant at that time along with suspension mods, was getting the same lap times on the old SIR short course as an old B13 Sentra 1.3L with minimal mods.

My daily driver is a lifted 4x4. I tried my weekend car before but the suspension is too soft and it handles like a boat since it was made for comfort. I'd need to change the stock suspension. I am on the search right now for a new project car but haven't fully decided what I'll get.

I've driven enough times to know that suspension isn't going to give me any large gains. Power is what's lacking :)

Haven't had any bolt-ons yet and the engine is completely stock. Someone's selling off a set of braided brake lines, I've reserved them as insurance against brake fade. Same guy is also selling off his used K&N intake, but finances are a little tight. We'll see.

I understand sir. I'd still track it at least once, if only to test just how good the braking is on your soft-sprung rig - both with fresh brakes and under some duress from repeated hard braking. That way, I could at least adjust my driving accordingly on the chaos of the public street. ;) Or, if you have the money to burn on car mods, you can determine which exact suspension components you want to change out for better pieces.

But that's just me. :) As you can probably tell, "Kuripot Racing" ako eh hehe. :D

Apologies if I gave the impression that driving on track has to be at 10/10ths effort all the time; it doesn't have to be. As long as proper track etiquette is observed, you'll do fine. Usually, it involves something as simple as watching your mirrors, and pointing/signalling to which side you want faster traffic to pass, e.g. point/signal to the left if you want an approaching faster vehicle to pass on that side.

    Cheers!

^Is this the white B13 1.3 by Allan? If it is then he is the living proof of a stock engine modified driver. I heard he was trained by the Ramirez. Met him in a Circuit Showdown event. I was late, no practice and my first time using the long track at SIR. Needless to say, I got lost. So the interval got shorter and he was now on my tail. I never been pressured in my whole life. Especially by a 1.3 Sentra against my 2.0 V6. Lost control of my car. Good thing I didn't hit anything, just went into the grass.

I highly encourage everyone to join track events. What's the use of your go fast mods if you won't be able to use it.

Good thing you came out unscathed, man. I dread to even think of going off-track on the old Subic International Raceway. Usually that equates to hitting some sort of physical wall. :(

Agreed. What's the use of racing mods if you don't use it unless you get replicas like the replica Brembo calipers that you often see around.

My friends and I go on fun runs at Sierra Madre with our weekend cars. It's a lot of fun. I drive the slowest of the pack though.

Nope, this is someone else. But his car was also a white B13 and yes, he also took track time and lessons under Kookie back then.
Good thing you came out unscathed, man. I dread to even think of going off-track on the old Subic International Raceway. Usually that equates to hitting some sort of physical wall. :(

Yeah, at SIR your fate for not respecting the track or listening to the "elders" was usually a date with the wall. Some kid figured that out on his second lap, during his first time on SIR RWYB. Turns out he was a drag racer who never, ever went on a track prior to that. Kookie was just looking at the wreck and said "this is what happens when you put drag racers on a track"... :D

BTW, a stock B16 Honda will really suck on a technical track so it's not a surprise that lesser hp cars will give it a quite a run. It's all in the powerband really. The stock B16 will pull away in the straights with it's high rpm hp but once you get onto the turns, the car with a more useable powerband (low rpm torque and good midrange hp) will really catch up and even pass it. ;)

I also used to drive on the Laguna - Infanta/Real route during weekend fun runs. Other roads i loved were the Baguio - Ambuklao route, Ilocos (Norte), and the highways in Mindanao (Gen San/Cotobato area, Davao - Bukidnon - CDO).
