Boxing: Gennady "GGG" Golovkin

edited April 2018 in Sports Zone
With Philippine boxing currently at a low with consecutive losses suffered by the nation's top fighters, there's a rising middleweight force from the former Soviet republic Kazakhstan worth taking a look into.

The current WBA middleweight beltholder, HBO has taken notice of his skills and has placed their support behind him. With an impressive 345-5 amateur record and notable amateur wins over Andre Direll, Andy Lee and Lucian Bute (by KO), he has won boxing silver at the 2004 Olympics.

A pro record of 26-0 with 23 KO's has barely scratched the surface of what this guy can really do, and reports of his gym sparring against recognizable names in and around his weight class may serve as a double-edged sword in terms of matchmaking. Admittedly, Golovkin's professional resume lacks the big names and he may find it difficult to negotiate one in the immediate future based on how he has performed in the gym against guys like Peter Quillin, El Perro, Chavez Jr and Canelo Alvarez. It's a good thing HBO has decided to get behind him so we can actually see him against the bigger names in his division.

He will defend his WBA belt on June 26 against British Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO's). Macklin previously lost to Sergio Martinez via 11th round stoppage but not before sending Sergio to the canvas in round 7. Macklin has since come back with a first round knockout of Joachim Alcine last September.

Gennady is also known as "GGG", "Superman", and "The Kazakh Knockout King". Some say he has a striking resemblance to MAD magazine's Alfred E. Neumann, though I personally wouldn't risk saying it to his face not knowing how he would react. :rotflmao:

GGG goes up against Matthew Macklin on Sunday Manila time on HBO BAD. Macklin previously pushed Felix Sturm to the edge on the way to a controversial loss, and floored Martinez before being stopped himself.

Macklin represents Golovkin's most highly regarded opponent to date, still majority of experts tab GGG the overwhelming favorite here. Should Gennady impress here Martinez, Chavez Jr. or Danny Geale is looked as probably the next opponent by HBO.

^ Interesting. Thank you. I always knew Kazakh fighters are tough as nails. having had the (dis)pleasure of sparring with a few.
  • GGG won via 3rd TKO, a left hand liver shot :)

Its amazing to see how Macklin reacted every time Gennady landed a punch. Such heavy hands. I am now salivating over a GGG vs Quilin fight.
