Getting into UST Med - yung totoo

UST FMS please enlighten us.....ano ba talaga yung factor na magpapalaki ng chance mo of getting into UST? Some of my profs say your NMAT score has more weight (they are also UST med graduates so "in the know" daw sila :rotflmao:). When i ask other people who got in they always say "basta dapat mataas GWA mo" ang labo e.

Also totoo ba yung policy na bawal kang mag-apply for UST med kung may bagsak ka sa premed mo??? As in are they strictly following that policy? Kasi may unfortunately may bagsak ako but i retook it last year and got a much higher grade. Wala na ba talaga akong chance? :( i've computed my "possible" GWA before i graduate and mataas naman if all goes well (kahit may bagsak) and may chance na makagraduate akong cum laude pero di pa rin ako confident with my chances of getting in.

I guess my real question is--ano ba talaga hanap ng UST med? :rotflmao: Help me pleaaaase

^ Pwede pa bang maging cum laude pag may bagsak???

Alam ko pag may singko ka na sa TOR mo, hindi ka na qualified for Latin honors.

Mababa lang din ang GWA ko when I applied at UST Med, it was 2.1

My NMAT was only 91, and I got in.

5 of my classmates from undergrad weren't as successful, even though wala silang mga 5.0 sa transcript.

Pero hindi kasi kami galing sa USTe kaya siguro limited lang ang slots for us.

According to FMS's website, 80 - 85% ang slots allotted for UST graduates, so kung USTe grad ka, baka mag-qualify ka pa kahit may bagsak ka.

Kami lang non-USTe graduates ang kelangang mag-compete for the 15 - 20% slots available.

And sa panahon ngayon, mahirap na ring mag-apply sa med schools, unlike 5 years ago. Mahigpit na ang competition. Kasi karamihan ng BS Nursing graduates ngayon nag-pro-proceed na sa Med proper (and there are thousands of them), kasi nga halos wala na ring future ang BS Nursing locally.

So, kung mababa ang GWA mo, aim for a 99 percentile sa NMAT mo.

Ang next NMAT is this coming April, pero tapos na ang application. Alam ko may isa pang NMAT this year, sa sem break ata meron pang isa.

Tapos na rin ang UST Med application. By September/October na ulit ang next.

Ay bawal ba?? All this time akala ko pwedeng mag latin honors kahit may bagsak, sabi kasi sa dean's office basta 1.86-2.10 GWA mo okay na. Walang sinabi about failures or anything, yun din hinahanap ko dati e hahahaha. Oh well. Highest possible GWA for me would be 2.00 :(( I guess ittry ko na lang taasan ng bongga yung NMAT ko :hmm:

Paragraph no. 3 of UST-FMS's ADMISSION POLICIES FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2013 - 2014 reads:

Freshmen slots are limited and therefore highly competitive. As a rule, scholastic standing and NMAT performance are given the biggest weight when narrowing the probable candidates for admission. Hence, to have a good head start the applicant must present a scholastic performance recorded average of at least 2.00/B+/86%, WITH NO FAILURES before the period of application; and a National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) score of at least eightieth percentile (80%ile).

Given that it is highly competitive and since those with NO FAILURES are preferred, it would mean that there's a very slim chance for one with a failed grade to get in. And what remains of that chance all the more get's slashed if one is not a UST pre-med graduate.

UST-FMS's policy of reserving the greatest portion of the slots for it's own pre-med graduates is understandable since the great majority of them already intended to take their medicine course in UST when they were still undergraduates. When a professor/teacher (in a pre-med course in UST) asks a section of his/her class the question "Who among you here wants to be a doctor?", a substantial number if not majority almost invariably raise their hands.

But nevertheless, still apply, regardless of your background. As long as your qualified to apply, do it. Just make good in the entrance exam (if there's still one), your NMAT, and the interview. All of these may make or break your entry into the UST-FMS. Good luck.
