Fake Priests During Undas

The CBCP warns the people of fake priests in cemeteries who roam around and offer prayers or bless tombs for a fee. It is hard to distinguish them from real priests who also roam in cemeteries to offer prayers and bless tombs also for a fee. The CBCP suggests that you should ask to see the priest's "celebret", which must be the equivalent of a PRC ID for doctors or license for pilots. The CBCP has no more suggestions how to identify a genuine celebret from a "Recto" version.

Other than the issue of reduced earnings for the RCC, the main issue here should be what happen to the souls of those who were prayed over by the fake priests. My understanding of Catholic theology and my reading of the Bible give me the conclusion that it does not matter if the priest is genuine or fake. Unlike transubstantiation or wedding which requires a genuine priest in order for the Miracle of the Real Presence to realize or for the marriage to be valid, the prayer for the dead can be said by anybody. Therefore, the fake priest's prayer is equally valid as the genuine's priest's, unless somebody here will argue that the priest's prayer has higher efficacy.

If you suspect that the priest is unauthorized (e.g., he looks like Fr. Cris Garcia), don't ask for a celebret but simply ask for a discount. Your dead should be okay.

Dead souls who were prayed over by fake priest wiggle in their tomb while other just rest in peace if it's a legit priest. I know this bec. the wiggling in the spine is infectious. Try to accompany a fake priest or act one yourself during undas and feel what I mean.
  • Walang epekto yung prayers ng fake priest.

Malayo, Baldo. Malayo masyado ang verse sa isyu on validity of prayers for the dead by non-priests. The Catholic website indicated that in II Machabees, xii, 40-46, Judas Machabees -- a non-priest -- prayed for the dead.

Of course, the general principle is that each person can pray for another. Not only priests. This verse is illustrative: 1 Thessalonians 5:25 ESV "Brothers, pray for us."

Priests are ministers but a lot of fake ministers in the Philippines.:bop:
  • I think the CBCP's point for this is for people to be careful with those who say they're clergy and then asks for money. AFAIK a priest shouldn't ask for money for blessings. It is different when someone gives freely something for the priest, but it is another thing if the priest would ask for a fee for such. If a priest asks for a fee, then he can be reported to his bishop or superior for doing that.
