Long honk and flashing of lights might cause road rage?

As the title goes, do you think long honks and (prolonged) flashing of lights might cause road rage?

I'm not a regular visitor on this thread. But yesterday my husband and I had a big argument about this. My husband really hates drivers that do not signal when switching lanes so what he does is he sends a long honk, plus flashes the headlights. He does this to teach those drivers a lesson. It happens everyday when we are on the road, and it stresses me out. I said a beep is enough to send a message.

As a driver too, I told him that what he's doing might be interpreted differently, more than a warning sign. Other drivers might be short tempered, that they might really get off the car and challenge him for a fight. I’m not saying I agree with drivers that do not use signal lights, as this really causes serious accidents. It’s just that I’m concerned about my husband’s “He needs to know road safety” attitude.

Mas tama husband mo, specially on Philippine streets. A mere potpot of your horns means either nagtatawag ka ng pasahero or a highway greeting between friends kaya hindi yan papansinin or magegets lalo na pag PUV ang pinotpotan mo.
  • I just let them go.

Not to mention sino pa me dalang baril dyan.

What more eh kung parehong maangas pa di ba?

But i strongly suggest to let them go, yung mga a-hole magdrive. Dami na kasi nowadays yung marunong lang magpatakbo ng sasakyan pero hindi pa rin marunong magmaneho (if you know what I mean). I have been motoring for a long time na and I still believe na dadami pa rin ang mapagbigay sa kalye starting with each of us (repsonsible mototorists). You know, setting examples is number one way of teaching this a holes on the road.
  • hmm.. ako rider ng scooter. kung may lokoloko na hindi alam ang road rules at nakakotse, hinahabol ko ang hung-hang. kapag naipit sa trapik BINUBUNTAL KO ANG SIDE MIRROR or SINISIPA KO ANG PINTUAN NG KOTSE NYA, sabay sibat. magkamot na lang siya ng ulo nya dahil sa kalokohan nya sa daan. in the first place, those types of drivers have no business being on the road.

I am strongly against these kinds of actions as it welcomes more agression and thus more possiblity for road rage. As I have said, Let them go, kung ganun ugali niya sa kalye at pinatulan mo, then pareho lang kayo. Dont go stooping down to their level. And besides, showing them a good example of how a motorist should act might cause them to act more positively sa ibang motorista naman next time. Trust me, been there, done that, have been to the extent of pulling a gun out too. Idiots with a steering wheel or handlebar dont even deserve to be given that much attention. Its just the road and your vehicle and getting from point A to point B the most convenient way.
  • TS,
Mild pa nga to - drivers that do not signal when switching lanes. Yes, long horn is very inviting. Pwede naman short horn lang just to get the attention but yung long horn is unnecessary.

Mas madami pang malala dyan like drivers who straddle two lanes for too long; bus drivers acting like they're driving a sports car; motorcycles just right by your side mirrors; etc.

Suggest to your husband to let it go and be a defensive driver instead. A defensive driver will know if the vehicle in front of him will change lane even without the signal lights.

In Manila streets, you never know when you're facing a angst-ridden half-educated imbecile who is behind the wheel. I would advise you to be cautious with those long honks and flashing lights. I practice road courtesy and extend it to everyone even when it is not reciprocated. Aggression will not lead to anything positive. Patience and humility are what is needed on our roads today and not more pride and anger and a holier-art-than-thou attitude.

The problem with Filipino drivers, the more you use your signal lights, the more they will not let you pass.

I agree with this statement. If you're biker and being bullied by a 4 wheeler out of your lane especially by puv drivers then make full use of your ability to get away and teach those aholes a lesson.

Foreigners on Harleys do it, and I have done it on my gixxer. Just cuz you are small doesn't mean you can be bullied on the road. Show them some biker justice hehe.
  • ^goodluck with that.

Like I said, you have to catch them first. In the metro traffic it's almost impossible. On the highways you would have to be driving a sports car or a heavily modified civic, etc. to even hope of catching a biker on a 600cc or more big bike. A GSXR 600 accelerates from 0-100kph in about 3.5 seconds so good luck catching that on the metro streets. No PUV taxi driver has even come close to catching me when I kicked off his sidemirror since they don't appear to use them anyways. Road rage is bad, but damn the amount of abuse bikers get from the dumb drivers on the road in this country can make people break and go postal.

I saw a foreigner from mad dogs mc club punch the sidemirror of a corolla that swerved into him and forced him out of his lane at ayala cor makati ave before. The Harley rider sped away. The corolla driver couldn't do a thing and just stopped to pick up his broken sidemirror housing from the road.

Your aggression and negative attitude will only increase road rage on the road and the rift between motorcycle riders and 4-wheeled drivers. I think both motorcycle riders and 4-wheeled vehicle drivers get a lot of abuse from each other. If we all just try to have a positive outlook and maintain road courtesy and do without the attitude of getting ahead of each other, our road and traffic situation will improve. Maintaining your attitude will one day culminate into someone doing something rash especially with all the hot heads on the road.

In a perfect or ideal world that view would be nice, but the reality in the Philippines makes that impossible.

Try riding a motorcycle daily through the metro and you will change your tune on who gets the most abuse. When on my car mostly PUV drivers cut me off. When on a motorcycle every kind of driver will cut you off. Private or PUV it makes almost no difference. A car driver will see a motorcycle occupying a lane and slowly swerve into the space in the lane cuz in their mind the MC will just move aside and pass through the middle. This can be excused if done slowly but many misjudge the speed of the motorcycle due to its small size in their mirror and swerve fast into the path of the biker. Having an accident in a car will cause damage to the car but the driver will be safe, but on a bike the biker can easily die.

Regarding the 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler rift, as long as there are people who do not know the feeling of both riding a bike or driving a car there will always be a rift. MC only riders in this country have a lack of knowledge when it comes to road rules and common courtesy on the road. Car only drivers have little understanding that bikes look small on their mirrors but are actually travelling faster and may be closer to their car than they think so they end up often swerving into the biker on the road. Add the fact that people in the bigger vehicle are more inclined to bully the smaller one on the road in this country. The rift between biker and driver will never go away. That is the reality anywhere in the world. It is just more apparent in the Philippines because the driver/biker culture here is full of people who don't really know the rules of the road and the severe lack of strict implementation of the rules by the government allows the ignorance to continue.

Now enough of this discussion. We are getting off topic.

    yup, enough of these.

Bottom line is we cant rely on the government to discipline all motorists. That is why it is my humble suggestion to all motorists to just let every bit of road rage go. It is up to us the more level headed motorists to teach those aholes behind the wheels or handlebars by setting good examples. Dont add fuel to the fire. It all boils down to us, getting to where we want to go the most convenient way by avoiding road rage.

@eaglamania, real world is when you end up in the hospital or worst because of a gunshot wound.

To get back on-topic, the answer is yes. Honking your horn for a prolonged period as well as flashing your lights may indeed cause road rage in this country of hot heads who all have balls bigger than their brains. Just take it easy fellas. ;)

I don't know about you guys but discipline and road courtesy starts with all of us. I will keep on being patient and hopefully, things will improve one day.

Just to add, I used to ride my Peugeot scooter around the city all the time so I do know how it feels to ride a two-wheeled vehicle in the city. I also still ride my mountain bike too on weekends. :)
