The Purpose of Life - Jeffrey Lang

The Purpose of Life - Dr. Jeffrey Lang (ex-Atheist) (1 hr 31 minutes)

Dr. Jeffrey Lang shares his experiences as a young man struggling to find meaning in a world full of turmoil. He recounts his time growing up in San Francisco when his discovery of the Holy Qur'an compelled him to reconsider his scepticism of religion. He explains how within the Qur'an he found the practical answers to his most pressing philosophical questions of why evil exists, who is God and the purpose of life. Follow his heartfelt, rational exploration of the Qur'an as he "connects the dots" to figure out what God truly wants from the human being.

Dr. Lang, a professor of mathematics at the University of Kansas, also discusses the human as an intellectual and moral being, the fall of the first human to Earth, the essential elements of faith, how to get closer to God, and how the Qur'an emphasizes reason in the spiritual quest. An engaging lecture providing insight into the thought process of one finding himself on a spiritual quest from atheism to Islam. (Duration: 1 hour, 32 min)

Dr. Jeffrey Lang is an American convert to Islam and author of the best selling works "Struggling to Surrender: Some Impressions of an American Convert to Islam", "Even Angels Ask: A Journey to Islam in America" and "Losing My Religion: A Call For Help". He also co-founded Generation Islam, a networking group serving the needs of North American born Muslims.

“Painters can make the eyes of a portrait appear to be following you from one place to another, but which author can write a scripture that anticipates your daily vicissitudes?... Each night I would formulate questions and objections and somehow discover the answer the next day. It seemed that the author was reading my ideas and writing in the appropriate lines in time for my next reading. I have met myself in its pages...”

How atheists feel towards life and the world?

    9h5ox0.gif
    Dr. Jeffrey Lang (ex-Atheist)
(Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kansas)

There is an emptiness and a loneliness that an atheist feels, which people of faith cannot understand. The world is absurd, an accident. Science has, or will have, all the answers, but life has no real meaning or significance. Death is final. You can have influence and an impact on the world through your children; you can do well, be remembered in the history books for hundreds, even thousands of years; when the sun dies mankind may colonize other star systems, maybe even other galaxies. But ultimately, even if it takes 15 Billion years, the universe itself will die, or collapse into a black hole or whatever, and the end is absolute nothingness, the only thing that is infinite is a void. Life, then, is meaningless and death frightening. Truth and morality can become relative, which may lead to moral confusion, hedonism, and worse.

How Darwin's Theory of Evolution Imposed Racism

    2w5m8fm.jpg
    Memphis, Tennessee. September 1943.

His (Darwin's) theory of the survival of the fittest was warmly welcomed by the social scientists of the day, and they believed mankind had achieved various levels of evolution culminating in the white man's civilization. By the second half of the nineteenth century racism was accepted as fact by the vast majority of Western scientists.

Darwin's Source of Inspiration: Malthus's Theory of Ruthlessness

Darwin's source of inspiration on this subject was the British economist Thomas Malthus's book An Essay on the Principle of Population. Left to their own devices, Malthus calculated that the human population increased rapidly. In his view, the main influences that kept populations under control were disasters such as war, famine and disease. In short, according to this brutal claim, some people had to die for others to live. Existence came to mean permanent war.

    16c0s2r.jpg
    Thomas Malthus

Influenced by these ideas, Darwin applied this concept of conflict to all of nature, and proposed that the strong and the fittest emerged victorious from this war of existence. Moreover, he claimed that the so-called struggle for survival was a justified and unchangeable law of nature. On the other hand, he invited people to abandon their religious beliefs by denying the Creation, and thus undermined all ethical values that might prove to be obstacles to the ruthlessness of the struggle for survival.

    10n9kjc.jpg

In his book, The Origin of Species, Darwin suggested that European white races had progressed in evolution, whereas the other races were still at the same level as apes. These ideas provided a so-called scientific justification for racist thinkers.

The Role of Darwinism in Preparing the Ground for World War I

As Darwinism dominated European culture, the effects of the struggle for survival began to emerge. Colonialist European nations in particular began to portray the nations they colonized as "evolutionary backward na-tions" and looked to Darwinism for justification.

    5pke2x.jpg

The bloodiest political effect of Darwinism was the outbreak of World War I in 1914. In his book Europe Since 1870, the well-known British professor of history James Joll explains that one of the factors that prepared the ground for World War I was the belief in Darwinism of European rulers at the time.

As we have seen, World War I broke out because of European thinkers, generals and administrators who saw warfare, bloodshed and suffering as a kind of development, and thought they were an unchanging law of nature. The ideological root that dragged all of that generation to destruction was nothing else than Darwin's concepts of the "struggle for survival" and "favoured races."

    25j8oqo.jpg

World War I left behind it 8 million dead, hundreds of ruined cities, and millions of wounded, crippled, homeless and unemployed.

    mhsra0.jpg
European philosophers and political leaders of the first decade of the 20th century were obsessed with the Darwinist notion of "the struggle for existence". Hence their enthusiasm for starting the Great War, a terrible cataclysm that destroyed more than 10 million lives.

And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (the time). And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture.

The Role of Darwinism in Preparing the Ground for World War II

    2ho9yz5.jpg

The basic cause of World War II, which broke out 21 years later (after WWI) and left 55 million dead behind it, was also based on Darwinism. As Darwinism fed racism in the 19th century, it formed the basis of an ideology that would develop and drown the world in blood in the 20th century: Nazism.

A strong Darwinist influence can be seen in Nazi ideologues. When one examines this theory, which was given shape by Adolf Hitler and Alfred Rosenberg, one comes across such concepts as "natural selection," "selective mating," and "the struggle for survival between the races," which are repeated dozens of time in the works of Darwin. When calling his book Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler was inspired by the Darwinist struggle for survival and the principle that victory went to the fittest. He particularly talks about the struggle between the races: History would culminate in a new millennial empire of unparalleled splendour, based on a new racial hierarchy ordained by nature herself.

    outslz.jpg

In the 1933 Nuremberg party rally, Hitler proclaimed that "a higher race subjects to itself a lower race… a right which we see in nature and which can be regarded as the sole conceivable right".

    2vxg3rq.jpg

That the Nazis were influenced by Darwinism is a fact that almost all historians who are expert in the matter accept.

The historian Hickman describes Darwinism's influence on Hitler as follows:
(Hitler) was a firm believer and preacher of evolution. Whatever the deeper, profound, complexities of his psychosis, it is certain that [the concept of struggle was important because] … his book, Mein Kampf, clearly set forth a number of evolutionary ideas, particularly those emphasizing struggle, survival of the fittest and the extermination of the weak to produce a better society.

Hitler, who emerged with these views, dragged the world to violence that had never before been seen. Many ethnic and political groups, and especially the Jews, were exposed to terrible cruelty and slaughter in the Nazi concentration camps. World War II, which began with the Nazi invasion, cost 55 million lives. What lay behind the greatest tragedy in world history was Darwinism's concept of the "struggle for survival."

    magwba.jpg
Fascism, which has Darwinist concepts at its heart, caused the death of millions of innocent people. This dreadful ideology drew many countries of the world into a maelstrom of destruction and misery.

And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (the time). And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture.

The Bloody Alliance: Darwinism and Communism

While fascists are found on the right wing of Social Darwinism, the left wing is occupied by communists. Communists have always been among the fiercest defenders of Darwin's theory.

    1zld7b8.jpg
Soviet flag being raised over the German Reichstag Building (May 2, 1945). Taken by Red Army photographer Yevgeny Khaldei.

This relationship between Darwinism and communism goes right back to the founders of both these "isms." Marx and Engels, the founders of communism, read Darwin's The Origin of Species as soon as it came out, and were amazed at its dialectical materialist attitude. The correspondence between Marx and Engels showed that they saw Darwin's theory as "containing the basis in natural history for communism." In his book The Dialectics of Nature, which he wrote under the influence of Darwin, Engels was full of praise for Darwin, and tried to make his own contribution to the theory in the chapter "The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man."

    2hp1szs.jpg

Russian communists who followed in the footsteps of Marx and Engels, such as Plekhanov, Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, all agreed with Darwin's theory of evolution. Plekhanov, who is seen as the founder of Russian communism, regarded Marxism as "Darwinism in its application to social science.

    nytdue.jpg
    Leon Trotsky

Trotsky said, "Darwin's discovery is the highest triumph of the dialectic in the whole field of organic matter."

Darwinist education had a major role in the formation of communist cadres. For instance, historians note the fact that Stalin was religious in his youth, but became an atheist primarily because of Darwin's books.

    qqubs6.jpg
    Young Mao Tse-tung

Mao, who established communist rule in China and killed millions of people, openly stated that "Chinese socialism is founded upon Darwin and the theory of evolution."

Communism applied the Darwinian idea of conflict to the class conflict, and thus accepted murder and bloodshed as legitimate methods of control.

The Harvard University historian James Reeve Pusey goes into great detail regarding Darwinism's effect on Mao and Chinese communism in his research book China and Charles Darwin:

In short, there is an unbreakable link between the theory of evolution and communism. The theory claims that living things are the product of chance, and provides a so-called scientific support for atheism. Communism, an atheist ideology, is for that reason firmly tied to Darwinism. Moreover, the theory of evolution proposes that development in nature is possible thanks to conflict (in other words "the struggle for survival") and supports the concept of "dialectics" which is fundamental to communism.

    6dvbzm.jpg
People's Liberation Army attacking government defensive positions in Shangtang

If we think of the communist concept of "dialectical conflict," which killed some 120 million people during the 20th century, as a "killing machine", then we can better understand the dimensions of the disaster that Darwinism visited on the planet.

Dialectical Conflict Does Not Foster the Development of Societies, It Destroys Them.

As we learned earlier, Darwinism proposed that the struggle between living things is the cause of their development and gained so-called scientific currency for the philosophy of dialectical materialism.

    x36zki.jpg
Young Mao addressing followers in December 1944.

As can be understood from its name, dialectical materialism rests on the idea of "conflict". Karl Marx, the founder of this philosophy, propagated the idea that "if there were no struggle and opposition, everything would stay as it is." In another place he said, "Force is the midwife of every old society pregnant with a new one." By saying this, he called people to violence, war and bloodshed in order that they could develop.

The first to apply Marx's theory in the realm of politics was Lenin. Fostering the idea that "progress comes about as a result of the conflict of opposites", Lenin advocated that people with opposing ideas should be in constant conflict. Lenin also repeatedly stated that this conflict would require bloodshed, that is, terrorism.

    5lutef.jpg
Communist leaders, whose ideas of human society were also based on Darwinism, will go down in history as having caused terrible suffering with their cruel policies.

And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (the time). And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture.

    Why is Evolution Defended?

Since the day of its formulation, the evolutionary theory has served the best interests of materialist philosophy. Today, those who make efforts to keep this theory alive are the proponents of this philosophy.

    evol9305573.jpg

Why is the theory of evolution still defended despite the obvious evidence against it? The American evolutionist biologist, Michael Walker, makes the following confession as he answers this question: One is forced to conclude that many scientists and technologists pay lip service to Darwinian theory only because it supposedly excludes a creator.

Philosopher Malcolm Muggeridge states the inevitable collapse of the theory: I myself am convinced that the theory of evolution, especially the extent to which it's been applied, will be one of the great jokes in the history books in the future. Posterity will marvel that so very flimsy and dubious an hypothesis could be accepted with the incredible credulity that it has.

In his book, The Origin of Species, Darwin suggested that European white races had progressed in evolution, whereas the other races were still at the same level as apes. These ideas provided a so-called scientific justification for racist thinkers.

God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! The philosophical itinerary of French Marxist philosopher Roger Garaudy

    7647817.jpg

He was born in 1914, and converted to Islam in 1982 when he was 68 years old, the key factors were arguably his conviction that Western society is based on a false understanding of man, and his own life-long quest for transcendence. That is the view which will be taken in the present paper. Nevertheless, other factors undoubtedly played a part. Some of them will be reviewed briefly by way of introduction.

During the Second World War, Garaudy was interned with other Communists and spent nearly three years in prison camps in North Africa. On one occasion, when he was in a camp in Djelfa in southern Algeria, he and his fellow prisoners were saved from summary execution because the Arab guards defied orders to shoot them. He subsequently learned that they owed their lives to the fact that the guards were Ibadi Muslims whose religion forbade them to fire at unarmed men. Their unconditional obedience to a higher authority than their French commandant deeply impressed him and prepared the ground for his conversion over forty years later.

As a member of the Communist Party, Garaudy was confident that Communism alone would create the real conditions of a society where love will cease to be a hope or a moral law to become the objective law of society in its entirety. Thus he had found, or thought he had found, 'community'. Nevertheless, his philosophical position initially left far less scope for 'transcendence' than Cartesian rationalism had done. His Paris doctoral thesis on the materialist theory of knowledge was published in 1953. When he wrote it, he was a thorough-going metaphysical materialist. He defended the claim of Lysenko, the Soviet botanist, that acquired characteristics may be inherited; he explained the emergence of consciousness in terms of Pavlovian reflexes; and he toed the orthodox Soviet line that knowledge is a reflection of reality, or in other words, as Lenin put it, that the objective laws of nature are translated more or less exactly into man's head.

Mankind elevates itself to the heights of arrogance. A moment’s reflection should incline human hearts to humility. Look at a building and a person thinks of the architect, at a sculpture and a person instantly comprehends an artist. But examine the elegant intricacies of creation, from the complexity and balance of nuclear particle physics to the uncharted vastness of space, and a person conceives of…nothing? Surrounded by a world of synchronous complexities, we as mankind cannot even assemble the wing of a gnat. And yet the entire World and all the Universe exists in a state of perfect orchestration as a product of random accidents which molded cosmic chaos into balanced perfection? Some vote chance, others, creation.

The Fulfillment of the Prayer of Abraham (PBUH)

Prophet Muhammad (p) is a direct descendant of Ismael (p), the first son of Prophet Abraham (p), he was born in Makkah as a fulfillment of the prayer of Abraham (p).

And (remember) when the Lord of Ibrahim (Abraham) (i.e., Allah) tried him with (certain) Commands, which he fulfilled. He (Allah) said (to him), "Verily, I am going to make you a leader (Prophet) of mankind." (Ibrahim (Abraham)) said, "And of my offspring (to make leaders)." (Allah) said, "My Covenant (Prophethood, etc.) includes not Zalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers).
    {Noble Quran 2:124}

"(My mercy is for) those who follow the messenger, the prophet who can neither read nor write. They will find him mentioned in their scriptures, the Torah and the gospels. He orders them to do the right thing, and to avoid the wrong. He makes the pure and the wholesome lawful for them, and he forbids them the foul and the filthy. He relieves them of the burdens and the shackles with which they were bogged down. Successful indeed, are those who believe in him, honor and help him, and follow the light (the Qur’an) that was revealed to him."

"A Prophet From Among Their Brethren"
If Ismael and Isaac are the sons of the same father Abraham, then they are brothers. And so the children of the one are the BRETHREN of the children of the other. The children of Isaac are the Jews and the Children of Ishmael are the Arabs - so they are BRETHREN to one another. The Bible affirms, 'AND HE (ISHMAEL) SHALL DWELL IN THE PRESENCE OF ALL HIS BRETHREN.' (Genesis 16:12). 'AND HE (ISHMAEL) DIED IN THE PRESENCE OF ALL HIS BRETHREN.{Genesis 25:18}. The children of Isaac are the brethren of the Ishmaelites. In like manner Muhammad is from among the brethren of the Israelites because he was a descendant of Ishmael the son of Abraham. This exactly as the prophecy has it- 'FROM AMONG THEIR BRETHREN'.{Deut.18:18}. There the prophecy distinctly mentions that the coming prophet who would be like Moses, must arise NOT from the 'children of Israel' or from 'among themselves', but from among their brethren. Muhammad THEREFORE WAS FROM AMONG THEIR BRETHREN!

"Like Unto Thee", this does not pertain to Jesus (p), it pertains to Muhammad (p):
    1. Moses had a father and a mother. Muhammad also had a father and a mother. But Jesus had only a mother, and no human father.
    2. Moses and Muhammad were born in the normal, natural course, i.e. the physical association of man and woman; but Jesus was created by a special miracle.
    3. Moses and Muhammad married and begat children, but Jesus remained a bachelor all his life.
    4. Moses and Muhammad were accepted as prophets by their people in their very lifetime.
    5. Moses and Muhammad were prophets as well as kings. A prophet means a man who receives Divine Revelation for the Guidance of Man and this Guidance he conveys to God's creatures as received without any addition or deletion. A king is a person who has the power of life and death over his people.
    6. Moses and Muhammad brought new laws and new regulations for their people.
    7. Both Moses and Muhammad died natural deaths.
    8. Moses and Muhammad both lie buried in earth.

"Will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him"
Prophet Muhammad (p) was unlettered and unlearned, no human had ever taught him a word. His teacher was his Creator:
Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.
It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:
He was taught by one Mighty in Power,
    {Noble Quran 53:3-5}

History tells us that Muhammad (p) was forty years of age. He was in a cave some three miles north of the City of Mecca. It was the 27th night of the Muslim month of Ramadaan. In the cave the Archangel Gabriel commands him in his mother tongue: 'IQRA' which means READ! or PROCLAIM! or RECITE! Muhammad (p) is terrified and in his bewilderment replies " MA ANA BEQARA which means I AM NOT LEARNED! The angel commands him a second time with the same result. For the third time the angel continues. Now Muhammad (p), grasps, that what was required of him was to repeat! to rehearse! And he repeats the words as they were put into his mouth:
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
Taught man that which he knew not.
    {Noble Quran 96:1-5}

We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.
Of some apostles We have already told thee the story; of others We have not;- and to Moses God spoke direct;-
Apostles who gave good news as well as warning, that mankind, after (the coming) of the apostles, should have no plea against God: For God is Exalted in Power, Wise.
    {Noble Quran 4:163-165}

“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…”
    {Noble Quran 5:3}

    Prophet Muhammad’s Last Sermon

    Prophet_Muhammad_s_Last_Sermon_-_A_Final_Admonition_001.jpg

After praising, and thanking God, the Prophet, may God send His praises upon him said:

“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. God has Judged that there shall be no interest, and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn Abd’al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived...

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under a trust from God and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj if you have the means.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before God and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Quran and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and it may be that the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O God, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”

    ---

Thus the beloved Prophet completed his Final Sermon, and upon it, near the summit of Arafat, the revelation came down:
“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…” (Quran 5:3)

God says in the Holy Quran that he was sent as a mercy for the people of the world:
“We sent thee not save as a mercy for the peoples.” (Quran 21:107)
    ---

Even today the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad is passed to every Muslim in every corner of the world through all possible means of communication. Muslims are reminded about it in mosques and in lectures. Indeed the meanings found in this sermon are indeed astounding, touching upon some of the most important rights God has over humanity, and humanity has over each other. Though the Prophet’s soul has left this world, his words are still living in our hearts.
