Joseph was Jesus' stepfather. As such, his genealogy was important to Jesus. While Jesus was the seed of David through His mother Mary, His inheritance of the throne of Israel came through Joseph, as all royal inheritances were passed through the fathers. As the adopted son of Joseph, Jesus was the full heir of David. Matthew was concerned with Jewish law, and thus emphasized Jesus' inheritance from David through His adopted father Joseph. Luke traced Jesus physical genealogy through Mary. Incidentally, Luke later refers to Joseph as the son of Heli, who was actually shown in the Jerusalem Talmud to be Mary's father. This was not a mistake. The Jews often refered to sons-in-law as sons. There is scriptural precedent in other Jewish genealogies.
Matthew traces the genealogy of Jesus from Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation, through David, the King of Judah to whom God made the Davidic covenant. This shows Jesus in the line of Abraham and David, but Matthew does not say that Jesus is the actual son of Josephonly that he is in the Messianic line through Joseph. By implication, he is the legal son of Joseph by adoption. Actually, in 1:16 he said, and to Jacob was born Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom (in the Greek text, the pronoun whom is feminine and refers only to Mary) was born Jesus, who is called Christ (the Messiah).
But this is not the end of the story. Luke traces the lineage of Jesus from Adam to Mary through Nathan (see Luke 3:31), not Solomon as with Joseph, to stress the true humanity of Jesus as the Son of Man, as One who can feel for our needs. Mary too is in the Messianic line as a descendent of David and this makes Jesus the physical son of David and in the Messianic line. Note that Luke starts the genealogy with these words, And when He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being supposedly the son of Joseph. He then goes on to show that Jesus was the grandson of Eli through Mary. Eli was Marys father (3:23).

"1. They are both the genealogies of Joseph, that is, of Jesus Christas the reputed and legal son of Joseph and Mary. 2. The genealogy of St. Matthew is Joseph's genealogy as legal successor to the throne of David. St. Luke's is Joseph's private Genealogy, exhibiting his real birth as David's son, and thus, showing why he was heir to Solomon's crown. The simple principle that one evangelist exhibits that genealogy which contained the successive heir to David's and Solomon's throne, while the other exhibits the paternal stem of him who was the heir, explains all the anomalies of the two pedigrees, their agreements as well as their discrepancies, and the circumstance of there being two at all. 3. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was in all probability the daughter of Jacob, and first cousin to Joseph, her husband. ... (Godet, Lange and many others take the ground that St. Luke gives the genealogy of Mary, rendering Luk_3:23thus: Jesus"being (as was suppposed), the son of Joseph, (but, in reality), the son of Heli." In this case, Mary, as declared in the Targums, was the daughter of Heli, and Heli was the grandfather of Jesus. Mary's name was omitted because "ancient sentiment did not comport with the mention of the mother as the genealogical link." So we often find in the Old Testament, the grandson called the son. This ... shows that Jesuswas not merely the legal but the actual descendant of David; and it would be very strange that in the gospel accounts, where so much is made of Jesusbeing the son and heir of David and of his kingdom [that] his real descent from David should not be given. ).
