STAR IN THE MAKING
She was Little Miss SM when a talent scout offered her the chance to do commercials. But before she could even appear in one print ad or TV commercial, the same talent scout told her she was going to appear in a movie.

The film turned to be "The Antipolo Massacre," produced by Golden Lions Films International and starring Cesar Montano and Dawn Zulueta. She played the role of Liezl Martinez' (who was featured in the movie) daughter. They were both massacred in the movie along with two other child stars who played her siblings.

It was in "Separada"-as Maricel Soriano and Edu Manzano's young daughter-where she won her first Famas award for best child actress. "Ang nakalaban ko noon," she says, "if I remember right, was Sunshine Dizon."

Golden Lions Films got her again to play Vilma Santos' daughter in the " Massacre."

Before she joined "Ang TV" and eventually became a Talent Center talent, she appeared in a Viva Films' movie, "Kadenang Bulaklak" as the young Donna Cruz.

Ang nagiisang SCARLET DELA RHEA

by Napoleon Quintos
ABS-CBN News Online
Scarlet (Angelica Panganiban) continues to remain strong despite the problems in her marriage. She would attend to her husband Miguel (Diether Ocampo) everytime he would come home stressed because of work, and she would keep her children away during tense moments. She deals with the pain of neglect brought about by her husband’s unresolved issues of the past.

Scarlet was born into a rich family, but in spite growing up having the power to get everything she wants, she will always long to own Miguel’s heart. Unknown to her, Isadora forced Miguel to marry her only for the money. Scarlet tried her best to satisfy her husband as they settled down in the U.S., but Miguel’s mind wandered far back home.
The years of submit and silence will reach its limit when her father Martin (Bembol Roco) brings home his new wife who turns out to be Catherine (Claudine Barreto), the old flame of Miguel. Scarlet will step up to protect her father from a scheming and opportunistic woman. Her struggle will further become complicated as she discovers that her husband and her new stepmother still have passionate feelings for each other. How far will Scarlet go to drive Catherine out of her life?

You look a bit overdressed para sa uuwian mong squatters area.

You look like a dirty ***** who’s just about to do her job…

(After all), blood is always thicker… than canal water.

Every inmate has a *****. Then you will be mine.

You’re just a gold-digger in red. Damn you!

You look like a ***** who is about to do her job.

Rounin was an ABS-CBN Philippine drama dubbed as tele-epiko or TV epic. It is a fantasy and martial arts series shown in Philippine TV and is said to be one of the most expensive locally-produced TV series aired in the Philippines. It is also the first Filipino series shot using high-definition video technology. It began airing on April 16, 2007 in ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida block. The series is line produced by Reality Films while Larger Than Life Productions is handling post, visual effects, VFX supervision, mastering and grading. The series is shot using Panasonic’s HDP2 technology.

Angelica’s First Ever MATURED ROLE

Malen is the only daughter of Chayong, a prayer woman in Quiapo who complements her trade with selling rosaries and scapulars. Stubborn and willful, Malen listens to nobody and does what she wants, even if it is against her mother's wishes. No wonder she becomes easily involved with Mike, a charming and wily tourist driver, who is very much like her. Fr. Tony is a troubled priest who seeks sanctuary in Quiapo. Assigned to a room below the place where Malen and Chayong live, he is witness to Malen's flagrant disobedience. He knows Chayong's grief when Malen leaves her to go away with Mike. It doesn't take long for Chayong to grow weak and eventually die of heartbreak. But Malen comes back, and when she does, she has no choice but to take over her mother's job as a prayer woman. She has to survive! So despite the negative comments of other prayer women, Malen stays at the church and accepts prayer requests from desperate souls in exchange for donations. Surprisingly, her prayers get answered even if she does not mean them. Malen can't understand why, but her clientele keeps growing. She is earning good money, so why should she care? As for Mike, he continues to be the hustler that he is. Besides being the personal driver of Mrs. Hoffman, he is also fooling around with her. When Mrs. Hoffman refuses to pay him for his additional services, he flies into a rage. A traffic accident leads him to shoot a man. He seeks refuge in Malen. But after a while, he leaves her again. He goes to the province to visit his young son, who is terminally ill. Malen too falls ill. But three days after her ordeal, she wakes up to find that her customers whose prayers were answered have come to her house to thank her. News about her power as a prayer woman has spread. Malen struggles with her newfound power. She can now heal people, and even the devout and hardworking nun, Sister Dolor, is convinced. She had been able to heal an old, festering wound on the nun's foot. Malen talks to the alcoholic priest who lives downstairs and seeks his advice. The experience transforms her. And him. She is able to forgive herself for her sins, especially those against her mother. But now comes her biggest test. Mike's son has died and he brings him to her. For the first time in her career as a prayer woman, she finds herself praying and trusting with all her heart. Can she bring him back to life? Will God grant her this prayer? Does she or does she not have the gift?

“ Although the lesson that you get from the story is vital enough for your life, the film itself is not a vital move in revolutionizing the state of the Philippine cinema. They must consider for the fact that the storyline is somewhat familiar and this can be taken against the film if there is not much creativity in the screenplay. ”
- Gercs from IMDb

35th Metro Manila Film Festival 2nd Best Picture
35th Metro Manila Film Festival Best Original Story
35th Metro Manila Film Festival Best Cinematography
35th Metro Manila Film Fesival Best Editing

Talagang makikisimpatiya ka sa character niya sa I Love You Goodbye bilang isang babaing iniwan ng kanyang boyfriend only to come back nang may natagpuan na siyang ibang mahal.

I Love you, Goodbye tells the story of a woman ditched by her boyfriend who finds love in a much older man. All hell breaks loose when her ex resurfaces. How they deal with each other and significant others is what the rest of the movie is all about.

Playing the lead is Angelina Panganiban. She is very convincing as a young woman torn between an old love and a new one with baggage. Gabby Concepcion plays the doctor who rescues her from the misery of a lost love. He looks very good yet conveys maturity and age. It isn't difficult to picture him as a successful professional yet every inch a charmer; no semblance of dirty old man here despite the age gap. Derek Ramsay completes the triangle and plays the photographer ex-boyfriend character to the hilt.

Kim Chui plays the doctor's daughter who fancies the photographer and hates her father's new flame. I've seen her initial forays into drama but was not impressed. Her maturity as an actress was evident in Tayong Dalawa. This film again proves that she can very well hold her own in the company of more experienced actors and that there is more to her than being half of the Kimerald tandem.

As for the support, I'm most impressed with Matet de Leon and Liza Lorena. Their portrayals of best friend and disapproving mother respectively are spot on.

The issues presented in the film are common in everyday life, falling in love, getting hurt, rebound relationship, rejection, and so resonate with most moviegoers. There is however a twist in the end which reminds me of a Diane Lane starrer and another movie. Still, despite the ending, the movie is worth a see.

I Love You Goodbye Review

First of all, congrats to the movie for bagging the Second Best Picture award and so as the Best Original Story

The movie was a good one, very much worthy of being in the Festival. The story was great, very original and fresh. Ill give an 8/10 for this.

As for Angelica's acting performance, I think she did a good job in this movie. Though her timing in some of the scenes seem to be kinda off. Kumbaga everybody knows how great as an actress she is but the movie failed to showcase Angelica's next level of acting quality. What she has shown in the movie was the very Angelica that we know: versatile, magaling umiyak, magaling magdeliver ng lines, pero yun nga, there were no instances na naipakita ang Next-level self niya as an actress. I'll give this an 8/10.

Kim Chiu, on the other hand, turned out to be a revelation. I, personally, have never thought that she could portray such a challenging role. The role as a kontrabida alone isn't challenging, but the very fact that Kim Chiu is playing the role, it turned out to be a big boom not just for Kim, but for the movie itself as well. Kumbaga the movie has offered the viewers something new as far as the current Kapamilya princess is concerned. 9/10 for Chiu's performance.

As for Mr. Gabby Concepcion, nothing new, nothing surprising: He is a great actor and that's it. One statement for his portrayal: Gabby's role was very Gabby. 8/10 for this one.

Derek's role was one of the most exciting recipe of the movie. He was a natural actor that he was able to portray such a dramatic role and not end-up being cheesy or feminine. In this movie, he was able to showcase a solid proof why he should be referred to as the Universal Leading man. Kim Chiu is very much identified with Gerald Anderson, but this fact has never affected the "magic" that Kim and him had in this movie. The magic I am referring to isn't about chemistry, it isn't about the kilig-factor, but it was the very plain fact that Derek was able to make his role ride-along with Kim's character, making his portrayal very effective and pleasing to the movie critics' senses. 9/10 for this one.

Though the editing was kind of not-smooth, it's still worthy of being commended, knowing the standards of local films. As for the script, the lines turned out great but not that remarkable. This phase has made the movie very realistic and very natural.

RECOMMENDED OR NOT: Definitely recommended

Two words explained why we prioritized I Love You Goodbye over all the other entries to this year’s festival: Laurice Guillen. Guillen is a director known for artistic integrity. Guillen’s track record as director has been consistent as well— she’s only made a few movies and each one of them was a critical success. Surely, directing another love story would be a walk in the park for the director who gave us the incomparable Salome, probably one of the best Filipino movies ever made.

The production values of the film were okay in the sense that we didn’t see underexposed shots or cats and dogs straying into the scenes. I Love You Goodbye coasted along steadily for the whole duration of the playing time; the heartbeat monitor in the operating room where Gabby Concepcion’s character supposedly does his thing as a cardiologist-surgeon showed more activity. Nothing much really happens throughout the film.

To be fair to Guillen, I Love You Goodbye had a storyline that was pitifully threadbare to begin with; there was hardly any complication in the plot with the slightest potential to create fireworks. It seemed they realized too late that the movie was so bland they decided to do a whodunit at the last 10 minutes; which, of course didn’t do anything to the movie other than bring it to an end.

I Love You Goodbye had the kind of story that won’t even make the cut for Maalala Mo Kaya so it’s truly a surprise that Star Cinema turned it into a movie, much more, an entry to the festival. Some emotional wrench was thrown into the plotline by Kim Chiu’s character as the bratty daughter and by Liza Lorena as the snotty and domineering mother, but both characters were so stereotypical and one-dimensional. Besides, they were onscreen less than 10 percent of the movie’s running time. Roughly 80 percent of the movie had Angelica Panganiban on the screen which ordinarily should not have been such a bad thing—she registers quite well and is a fine actress. But there’s only so much of a pretty face we can take.

To a certain extent, I Love You Goodbye reminded me very strongly of Kasal?, Guillen’s first directorial job, which I watched when I was in college but whose images still remain indelible in the recesses of memory. Both movies are love stories bookended with the same premise—a couple on their way to happily-ever-after as soon as they are able to settle unresolved issued with exes and domineering parents. Kasal?, however, had better psychology and thus offered complications one could empathize with. I Love You Goodbye’s only real complication involved Panganiban’s ex (acted out by real-life partner Derek Ramsey). The subplot about a malpractice lawsuit was so benign and inconsequential because everybody saw there was no basis for it.

Only Panganiban’s character was fleshed out—we get a glimpse of why she seemed overly clingy and needy. The rest were left unexplained: why Concepcion’s character seemed distant and conflicted (we presumed the mood swings were caused by some psychological reason instead of bad acting), why Chiu’s character was rude and cruel and what accounted for her sudden change of heart towards the end, etc.

Concepcion’s character is supposed to be madly, unconditionally in love with Panganiban character but we don’t really get a sense of that in the movie—in fact, it looks the other way around. Concepcion’s character comes across as bland and cold and sterile and it’s Panganiban’s character that smolders with passion and affection although it can be said that this is also a reflection of how gifted Panganiban is as an actress. She was probably robbed of the Best Actress trophy this year. Ramsey shows some promise but he is no match to Panganiban’s intensity. Chiu is lucky to have such a pretty face.

I Love You Goodbye proved that a movie needed to have a good story; that there’s only so much a director can do with bad material.
